    Notes: Abstract In 1981–1982 Abert Lake had an area of 200 km2, with a mean depth of 2.5 m and a total dissolved salt concentration of 82 gl-1. The spatial distribution and abundance of the brine shrimp, Artemia salina, were monitored for 1981–1982. In 1981 during the midsummer months, with sampling primarily in the eastern side of Abert Lake, brine shrimp populations showed peak densities of 2–4 ind. 1-1. In 1982, peak abundance occurred in early July and ranged between 5–8 ind. 1-1. Lakewide estimates of brine shrimp derived from 14 collecting stations and assuming a uniform distribution over the lake resulted in estimates of lakewide abundance of 3 × 1011 adults with a total biomass of 7 × 106 kg. The major algal species in the lake was a benthic filamentous green alga (Ctenocladus circinnatus).

    Notes: Summary: Most studies of discrimination in the context of queen rearing have been performed in spring or summer, but the influence of environmental conditions on nepotism in honeybees has not received attention. Our experiments were designed to test the hypothesis that restricted resources influence honeybee workers to express a bias towards rearing related larvae more strongly than under favorable conditions. Three experimental designs were employed. In the first experiment, larvae were grafted using standard commercial techniques for rearing queens. Nurse bees were presented with sister larvae and alien larvae placed each in a cup, side by side in alternating positions. In the second experiment, nurse bees were offered the choice between sister or alien larvae placed in the same cup. The third experiment was similar to the first except that the objective was to harvest and weigh the accepted larvae and the remaining royal jelly. This study demonstrates that our colonies did not display nepotism in the context of queen rearing, whatever the season.

    Notes: Summary The naupliar stage ofArtemia salina has been found to contain large amounts of an ATPase which requires the presence of Mg++, is stimulated by Na+ and K+, and is sensitive to ouabain. Upon cell fractionation, sixty percent of the Na+K-activated ATPase activity was present in a heavy membrane fraction which accompanied mitochondria, and twenty percent of the activity was found in the microsomal fraction. Separation of the heavy membranes containing the Na+K-activated ATPase from mitochondria was accomplished by sucrose density gradient centrifugation. Kinetic characterization of the Na+K-activated ATPase was examined with both mitochondrial and microsomal preparations. No significant differences were observed between the two preparations. Maximal enzyme activity occurred at pH 7.2 and a temperature of 45 ° C. Half maximal inhibition of enzymatic activity occurred with ouabain concentration of 8 × 10−6 M. Half maximal activation of the enzyme by ATP and MgCl2 occurred at 8 × 10−4 and 1 × 10−3 M, respectively, with an optimal Mg++/ATP ratio of 2.0. NaCl and KC1 (or NH4C1) were required for activity, with half maximal activation at 1 × 10−2 and 9 × 10−3 M (or 2.1 × 10−2 M), respectively. The optimal Na+/K+ ratio was 4.0, although enzymatic activity occurred through a wide range of ratios. In contrast, survival of nauplii was reduced in media in which the Na+/K+ ratio was less than 10. Anatomical localization of the enzyme in nauplii indicated that the abdominal region contained 44% of the total Na+K-activated ATPase activity, while the cephalothoracic region contained 54% of the total activity. Isolated larval salt glands contained 10% or less of the total activity. In contrast, the adult leg segments containing the salt-transporting organs showed 54% of the total Na+K-activated ATPase activity.

    Notes: Abstract Pericentric inversions involving the secondary constriction (qh) region of chromosome 9 are considered to be normal variants. The evolutionary mechanisms and conservation of these inversions via Mendelian fashion have been investigated since the advent of banding techniques. Routine cytogenetic techniques cannot provide the fine characterization necessary to determine the type of genetic material involved in these rearrangements. Therefore, the fluorescence in situ hybridization technique with the human centromere-specific alpha satellite and the beta satellite (D9Z5) and classical satellite (D9Z1) human DNA probes were used to identify the breakpoints of chromosome 9 pericentric inversions. Four unique types of pericentric inversions involving the 9qh region were observed, and the mechanism may be due to breakage and reunion at the proposed breakpoints. They are: type A inversions consist of breakpoints within the alpha and beta satellite DNA regions; type B consist of breakpoints within the beta satellite DNA region and band 9q13; type C involve breakage within the beta and classical satellite DNA regions, and type D have breakpoints within the alpha and classical satellite DNA regions. Obviously, reshuffling of satellite DNA sequences has occurred, which has given rise to a variety of heteromorphisms whose clinical significance remains obscure.

    Notes: Summary Four polysaccharide fractions were obtained by acid and alkaline degradation of purified cell walls of Prototheca spp. and Chlorella spp. These fractions were further hydrolyzed and the component sugars identified. Five Prototheca strains and two Chlorella protothecoides strains have essentially similar polysaccharide compositions, which significantly differ from those of C. vulgaris and C. pyrenoidosa. This emphasizes the close affinity of C. protothecoides to Prototheca spp. not shared by other Chlorella spp.

    Notes: Abstract Because of its key role in the metabolism of glycerol during fermentation, 1,3-propanediol dehydrogenase (EC 1.1.1.202) of Enterobacter agglomerans CNCM 1210 was purified to homogeneity and studied with respect to its sensitivity to pH and to nucleotide and 1,3-propanediol concentrations. Enzyme activity was optimal at pH 7.8. The enzyme was competitively inhibited by NAD+ (Ki of 0.29 mM), and 1,3-propanediol exerted a strong inhibitory effect according to a mixed-type inhibition with a Ki of 13.7 mM and an a-factor of 9.0. It is proposed that these dehydrogenase properties be extended to the dehydrogenases of Citrobacter freundii and Klebsiella pneumoniae, which exhibited numerous similar physical properties.

    Notes: Summary The bioavailability of a new controlled release formulation of indomethacin lysine salt in tablets was tested in 6 healthy humans against a conventional indomethacin lysinate formulation in capsules. Both contained 100 mg of the drug, i.e. 70 mg indomethacin. Peak plasma levels were lower and more lasting and the AUC was higher with the new controlled release formulation. The latter on average produced active plasma levels for 12 h, and so it can be recommended for twice daily administration.

    Notes: Summary In order to evaluate the separate effects of aminophylline on the neural and muscular components of the respiratory control system, assessed by electromyographic activity of the diaphragm (EMGd) and mouth occlusion pressure (P0.1), respectively, 6 normal subjects and 14 patients with mild or moderate chronic airflow obstruction (8 asthmatics and 6 COPD) were studied during CO2 rebreathing, before and after administration of a therapeutic dose of aminophylline 5.6 mg/kg. Compared to normal subjects, before aminophylline administration both asthmatic and COPD patients exhibited a significantly greater value in EMGd response slope to CO2. In no group did aminophylline modify P0.1 or EMGd activity response slope to CO2, nor did it significantly affect neuromuscular coupling, assessed by plotting change in P0.1 against change in EMGd activity with increasing CO2. The data appear to indicate that aminophylline in therapeutic concentrations does not modify respiratory drive or neuromuscular coupling in normal subjects, or in patients with mild or moderate chronic airflow obstruction.
