Notes: Abstract Coda wave quality factor (Q c ) was investigated by using digital data (100 sample sec−1) recorded by a vertical component short-period station installed for this study. The station was located in the greater Fairbanks area in central Alaska. From several hundred earthquakes recorded by this station in about a year, 27 earthquakes were selected for the above study; 7 of these selected earthquakes were located along the Alaska Wadati-Benioff zone (Pacific plate). The other 20 earthquakes were located in the area of intraplate seismicity (North American plate). The data was filtered using 9 pass-bands with center frequency varying from 1.5 Hz to 16 Hz with octave bandwidth. The values ofQ c obtained from the coda amplitude decay rates measured on the filtered data after corrections due to the recording instrument and source-receiver separation show appreciable frequency dependence. The value ofQ c varies in the range of 253 and 1190 corresponding to the frequency interval from 1.5 Hz to 16 Hz for the study area. This variation is close to that reported by others for the Kanto region of Japan. Moreover, the characteristics ofQ c obtained in the present case seem to be independent of epicentral distance and hypocentral depth.

Notes: Abstract Methods for enhancing the photoacoustic signal for both the gas microphone and the piezoelectric detection techniques are described. Measured values of the enhanced signals are comparable to the values predicted by theory. The ability to increase the photoacoustic signal may be particularly valuable in investigations where low light intensity is desirable to avoid surface damage or where the sample itself gives a very weak signal.

Notes: Abstract In designing a language-directed machine architecture, the choice of the technique used in interpreting machine instructions has considerable influence on machine performance. Yet, there does not appear to exist any well established design method for choosing an interpretive mechanism; or for determining the hardware/firmware support for an efficient implementation of such a mechanism. The purpose of this paper is to propose such a design method, based on the use of an architecture description language. The specific architectural focus of the paper is the variable-addressing mechanism in Ada and the implications that such mechanisms have on the implementation of procedure CALL/RETURN and block ENTRY/EXIT functions. The analysis presented in this paper clearly establishes that either Dijkstra's mechanism or “local display method” is not suitable for adoption in designing architectural support for variable-addressing in Ada.

Notes: Abstract The effect of an admixture of liquid3He on the propagation of solitary waves in superfluid4He is investigated. In the local density approximation, the mean field equations are reduced to the two-fluid equations describing the dynamics of the mixture of two liquids. The nonlinear perturbation approach is used to obtain a set of equations describing the density and velocity fluctuations of the homogeneous mixture at rest. The self-consistent solution of these equations is shown to be the solitary waves. Using a pseudopotential method, we perform numerical calculations to study the changes in the general properties of the waves caused by the3He impurity.

Notes: Abstract An attempt has been made to give a new definition of turn-on delay of a Josephson junction which differs from earlier works. On the basis of our definition, an analytical expression of turn-on delay has been developed. This analytical model is based on a concept inherently different from those of Harris and McDonaldet al. It is observed that based on our model, the analytical expression of McDonaldet al. can also be obtained. A comparative study between our turn-on delay and those of Harris and McDonaldet al. is also made. It is expected that our definition and analytical expression of turn-on delay will eliminate the drawbacks and confusions of earlier investigations. The present work will find use in critically ascertaining the switching speed of Josephson analogs and digital circuits.

Notes: Abstract Uptil now it has not been possible to explain the different physical properties of amorphous polymers using a model based on a single conceptual scheme. In this paper, a phenomenological model is proposed which tries to explain the mechanical, optical and thermal properties (both thermal conductivity and expansivity) of amorphous polymers. The model has similarities with the composite model, proposed by the present authors, which has proved to be successful in interpreting the different physical properties of semicrystalline polymers. The present model considers the bulk form of the polymer as an aggregate of microscopic units possessing intrinsic physical properties. On drawing, the development of anisotropy in different physical properties is supposed to be due to the development of preferred orientation of these units. The development of the preferred orientation has been estimated directly from birefringence data. The agreement between the calculated and experimental values of the elastic modulus, thermal conductivity and thermal expansivity of PVC, PMMA and PS is found to be reasonable good.

Notes: Abstract During the polymerization of N-vinylcarbazole (NVC) by Co(II)-13X the resultant polymer (¯Mn=6000) is soluble in benzene or toluene but partly soluble in methylethyl ketone (MEK). To ascertain whether the MEK insolubility is due to polymer tacticity, the polymer has been further characterized by13C NMR analysis. The atactic structure of polyN-vinylcarbazole (PNVC) initiated by Co(II) has been established from a comparison of methine carbon ( ) peaks with the same for a cationic PNVC(BF3/Et2O, isotactic) and radical PNVC (AIBN, atactic).

Notes: Summary Poly(vinyl chloride) has been modified chemically to a cation exchange resin by halogen displacement reactions with phenol sulfonic acid, bisphenol-A sulfonic acid and phenolpthalein sulfonic acid. Ion-exchange capacity, salt-splitting capacity and pH-titration characteristics of these resins have been evaluated. pH-titration behaviour of these resins is consistent with that of a polyfunctional cation-exchanger having pK1=2 and pK2=9–10 corresponding to -SO3H and phenolic-OH groups respectively. The ion-exchange capacity values are comparable in magnitude to those of polystyrene based commercial cation-exchangers such as Amberlite IR-120 and Dowex-50.
