Notes: Abstract The toxic effects of Marthasterias glacialis (L.) saponins and synthetic surface-active agents were studied using the plaice Pleuronectes platessa L. as test animal. Solutions of M. glacialis saponins caused considerable, although non-uniform, damage to the gill epithelium, death resulting from a disturbance in the levels of oxygen, carbon dioxide, and sodium ions in the tissues and blood. Histological examination showed that solutions of the synthetic surfactants caused less damage to the gill epithelium than did the M. glacialis saponins. There was a linear relationship between the logarithm of the median haemolytic concentration and the logarithm of the median lethal concentration for the synthetic surfactants. Haemolytic inhibition experiments suggest that the M. glacialis saponins damage cell membranes by interacting with membrane cholesterol.

Notes: Summary Intraperitoneal injection of zinc raised levels of a hepatic metallothionein-like species. Assuming that this species was metallothionein (MT) then levels were raised from approximately 20 μg/g to 300 μg/g in 7 days, and levels thereafter remained high for the next 4 weeks. The half-lives of the protein in liver and kidney from starved fish, measured using in vivo incorporation of35S cysteine at 11°C, were approximately 27 days and 32 days respectively. The following agents failed to stimulate synthesis of MT in plaice: stress (due to catching), endotoxin, dexamethasone, cortisol and turpentine.

Notes: Abstract Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L. were maintained on diets containing low (0.37 mg kg−1 diet), normal (1.95 mg kg−1 diet) and high (15 mg kg−1 diet) levels of vitamin A fed at 1.5% body weight per day. After 4 months, liver vitamin A levels reflected dietary intake and growth rates of all three groups were similar. Kidney leucocyte migration and serum bactericidal activity were found to be significantly reduced in fish fed low levels of vitamin A. On the other hand, high levels of vitamin A in the diet were found to augment serum antiprotease activity relative to the levels found in the other dietary groups. However, phagocyte respiratory burst activity, bactericidal activity and eicosanoid production were unaffected by the dietary vitamin A regime, as were lymphocyte functions (lymphokine and antibody production) and both serum lysozyme and classical complement activity. That the overall immunomodulatory effect of vitamin A was small was reflected in the resistance to Aeromonas salmonicida. No significant differences were found between the different vitamin A intake groups despite a trend to decreased resistance in the low vitamin A diet group.

Notes: Abstract An SEM quantitative stereophotogrammetry technique was developed and employed to analyse the fracture surfaces of VLS SiC whisker-Si3N4 matrix composites. This technique has quantitatively established that increased surface roughness is associated with increased fracture toughness for these composites. Matrix grain morphology and whisker/matrix interfacial characteristics are contributing factors to composite surface roughness.

Notes: Summary Some general observations are made on present problems in the teaching of geometry at pre-college level, and some aims for the future are suggested. These remarks are inevitably made against a background of British experience. Aids for the teaching of geometry are discussed; and two lines of development, perspective drawing and nomograms, are described as a school introduction to geometrical ideas which are important at college.

Notes: Summary The basic properties of nomograms can be proved most easily by metrical methods, but later on the practical problems of nomogram calibration lead naturally to Pappus's theorem. Rearranging the material, we see that Pappus's theorem alone establishes the commutative and associative properties of additive and multiplicative nomograms. Use of Desargues' theorem alone likewise enables proofs to be given of all of these properties, except the commutativity of multiplication. The breakdown of the proof in this case is not sufficient to demonstrate the impossibility of constructing a proof by any other means; nevertheless the material presented indicates the fundamental role of the theorems of Pappus and Desargues, in a context which is much simpler than the usual one, where they are used to set up a coordinate system in the plane. In this way some of the central ideas of Hilbert's Grundlagen can be approached at school level.
