Notes: We measured the Raman spectrum associated with the transverse optical (TO) phonon of cubic SiC (β-SiC) whiskers as a function of stress using a diamond anvil cell (for hydrostatic stress, X) and an individual whisker microtension apparatus (for uniaxial stress along [111], P). These experiments were used to calibrate the shift and the splitting of the TO phonon mode with applied stress. The results of the calibration experiments were used to evaluate the residual stress in an Al2O3/SiC(w) composite (30% SiC by volume). The Raman spectra from the composite shows that residual stress in the SiC near the surface of the composite is (X+P/3)=−1050±100 MPa.

Notes: Abstract Beta-silicon carbide whiskers are being grown by a vapour-liquid-solid (VLS) process which produces a very high purity, high strength single crystal fibre about 6μm in diameter and 5–100 mm long. Details of the growth process are given along with a general explanantion of the effects of the major growth parameters on whisker growth morphology.

Notes: Abstract Microscopic and macroscopic SiC-Si3N4 interfacial structures were synthesized and their properties examined. Microscopic interfaces were produced by hot isostatic pressing vapour-liquid-solid SiC whisker-polycrystalline Si3N4 matrix composites without densification aids. Macroscopic interfaces were formed by the chemical vapour deposited Si3N4 coating of large SiC single crystals. The characteristics of these model interfaces were investigated using transmission electron microscopy and indentation fracture. Results showed the microscopic interfaces to contain a small amount of second phase, while the macroscopic interfaces were pristine in nature with no second phase present. Pristine SiC-Si3N4 interfaces were strongly bonded at room temperature, but interfacial strength decreased at elevated temperatures.

Notes: Abstract The R-curve behaviour of a B4C-Al cermet was studied experimentally using the indentation/strength technique. Microstructural observations clearly indicate that the dominant mechanism contributing towards increasing toughness with crack length is due to bridging of ductile Al phases. It is inferred that ductile toughening, along with toughening due to residual stresses generated upon cooling of the cermet, contribute to this toughening behaviour. Close agreement between experimental results and a simple model is also established.

Notes: Abstract The tensile mechanical properties of long (up to 77 mm length) SiC whiskers have been investigated using multiple-fracture testing. SiC whiskers fractured from two types of defects. Below approximately 10 GPa stress, fracture occurred from extraneous surface defects, such as foreign matter particles and growth appendages. Above 10 GPa, fracture initiated from intrinsic defects. The Weibull modulus for intrinsic whisker fracture was determined to be in the range 3 to 4. Tests on very long whiskers indicated a strength plateau at 16 GPa for intrinsic whisker fracture. A basic statistical fracture description for the intrinsic fracture of whiskers was derived, which predicts a plateau in the intrinsic whisker strength.

Notes: Abstract A 30 vol % partially stabilized ZrO2 particle-MoSi2 matrix composite was synthesized by hot pressing to 96% theoretical density at 1700°C. No chemical reactions between the PSZ and MoSi2 were observed after hot pressing, indicating thermodynamic stability of these species. The composite formed an adherent and coherent glassy-appearing oxidation layer after oxidation at 1500°C. The room temperature indentation fracture toughness of the composite was 2.5 times that of pure MoSi2. These results demonstrate the feasibility of PSZ particle-MoSi2 matrix composites.

Notes: Abstract An SEM quantitative stereophotogrammetry technique was developed and employed to analyse the fracture surfaces of VLS SiC whisker-Si3N4 matrix composites. This technique has quantitatively established that increased surface roughness is associated with increased fracture toughness for these composites. Matrix grain morphology and whisker/matrix interfacial characteristics are contributing factors to composite surface roughness.

Notes: Abstract Molybdenum disilicide-titanium trisilicide (MoSi2-Ti5Si3) is a ceramic matrix composite (CMC) created for the purpose of improving the mechanical properties of molybdenum disilicide. Five alloys of this CMC were prepared by varying the ratio of volume per cent Ti5Si3 to volume per cent MoSi2. Evaluation of the specimens using the piezoelectric ultrasonic composite oscillator technique (PUCOT) determined the values of Young's modulus to range from 303 to 378 GPa at room temperature increasing with volume fraction of MoSi2. The values of Young's modulus for temperatures up to about 400 °C for each alloy decrease linearly with respect to increasing temperature. Damping within the specimens is independent of strain amplitude at room temperature, but shows some strain amplitude dependence at higher temperatures. The values of density for the alloys, determined using Archimedes' method, range from about 5200 to 5900 kg m−3, and compare favourably with the values determined by the rule of mixtures.
