Notes: Summary A statistical investigation of the world-wide electric current-systems corresponding to s.c's has been carried out. The storm-time variationDst and the disturbance diurnal variationDs of s.c's are derived separately from the results of the average local-time variations in the magnetic field at different latitudes. A conspicuousDs current-system is found in the inner polar regions, and a concentrated current-flow is also confirmed along the geomagnetic equator resembling the current-system of an enhancedSq-field. The inner polar region currents flow towards the meridian at about 9h local-time and are supposed to complete their path along the outer auroral zone in opposite directions in the forenoon and afternoon hemispheres. It is of interest that the pattern of this atmospheric electric current-system is very similar to that caused by an electric doublet centred on the highiy conducting region near the pole. Some observed facts concerning the statistical nature of s.c's can be explained by these current-systems.

Notes: Abstract The ≈ 1.1 Ga Natal Metamorphic Province (NMP) lies at the heart of a world-wide system of Grenville age mobile belts which welded early continental fragments into the Mesoproterozoic supercontinent of Rodinia. Structural analysis of the three tectonostratigraphic terranes in Natal reveals a kinematic history characterized by prolonged NE-SW plate convergence, manifested as early thrust tectonics and later pervasive sinistral transcurrent shearing. Consequently, superimposed on the Natal tectonostratigraphic terranes is a kinematic subdivision into tectonic domains which are characterized by shallow, south-west dipping foliations, south-west plunging stretching lineations and north-east verging recumbent folds, and by younger domains with subvertical shear fabrics, subhorizontal to oblique lineations and folding about near-vertical axes. Microtextural and petrographic analyses suggest that the later shearing took place under high temperature conditions of at least 500°C. The recorded kinematic indicators suggest that early subhorizontal compressional tectonics gave rise to tectonic thickening of the crust, progressively followed by oblique transcurrent shearing within a transpressional regime. The shearing event in the southern arc-related terranes was associated with the widespread emplacement of late kinematic rapakivi granite -charnockite plutons, with A-type granite geochemical characteristics. This orogenic event took place around 1100 Ma during prolonged NE-SW collisional convergence along the southern margin of the stable Archean foreland, which lay to the north.

Notes: Abstract The Heimefrontfjella mountains, Western Dronning Maud Land (East Antarctica), are dominantly composed of Grenville-aged (≈ 1.1 Ga) rocks, which were reworked during the Pan -African orogeny at ≈500 Ma. Three discontinuity-bounded Grenville-aged terranes have been recognized namely (from north to south) the Kottas, Sivorg and Vardeklettane terranes. The terranes contain their own characteristic lithological assemblages, although each is made up of an early supracrustal sequence of metavolcanic and/or metasedimentary gneisses, intruded by various (predominantly granitoid) suites. No older basement upon which the protoliths of these older gneisses were deposited has been recognized. In each terrane the older layered gneisses were intruded by various plutonic suites ranging in age from ≈ 1150 to ≈1000 Ma. The Vardeklettane terrane is characterized by abundant charnockites and two-pyroxene granulite facies parageneses in metabasites, whereas the Sivorg and Kottas terranes were metamorphosed to amphibolite facies grade. P-T estimates show that peak metamorphic conditions changed from ≈600°C at 8 kbar in the south, to ≈700 °C at 4 kbar in the northern Sivorg terrane. Regional greenschist retrogression of high-grade assemblages may be of Pan-African age. The Heimefrontfjella terranes were juxtaposed and pervasively deformed during a complex and protracted period of E-W collision orogenesis in a transpressive regime at ≈ 1.1 Ga. This is manifest as early, gently dipping thrust-related shear fabrics (D1), succeeded by the initiation of an important (D2) steep dextral shear zone (Heimefront shear zone, HSZ), during which the early fabrics and structures were steepened and rotated in an anticlockwise sense. The HSZ is a curvilinear structure which changes from a dextral oblique strike-slip lateral ramp in the north to a steep dip-slip frontal ramp in the south, where it forms the boundary between the Sivorg and Vardeklettane terranes. The Pan-African event is manifested as discrete, low- to medium-temperature ductile to brittle shears (D3) and numerous K/Ar cooling ages.

Notes: Summary Prolonged stimulation of the motor axon of the opener and stretcher muscles of the crayfish claw leads to long-term facilitation (LTF) of transmitter release at the neuromuscular junction. This facilitation is correlated with enhancement of tension development. Factors shown to enhance LTF of transmitter release, such as increased frequency of excitation, lower temperature, and exposure to ouabain also enhance tension development (Figs. 1, 2 and 4). Prolonged stimulation delivered in a bursting pattern enhances the development of tension more than an equivalent amount of stimulation delivered in a regular pattern (Fig. 3). Two circulating neurohormones, serotonin and octopamine, were examined for their effect on the development of tension during short and long periods of muscle activation. Serotonin and LTF of transmitter release appear to have an additive effect on the development of tension. The threshold for a detectable serotonin effect is 10−10 M. The effect of octopamine on the development of tension appears to be enhanced by longer periods of maintained muscle activation. LTF of transmitter release resulting from 5 min of continuous activation at 15 Hz is accompanied by a drop in the threshold of an observable octopamine effect on tension from 10−9Mto 10−10 M. It is proposed that octopamine's trophic effects on metabolism in muscle act to sustain muscular performance during maintained activity.

Notes: Summary 1. The generation of long term facilitation (LTF), a form of synaptic facilitation in Crustacea that results from maintained synaptic activity, is established for the first time in an intact animal. Facilitation of stretcher muscle myogram amplitude could be monitored in crayfish (Procambarus clarkii) while stimulating the excitor motoneuron in both intact animals and isolated preparations (Figs. 2, 3). 2. At an average stimulation frequency of 8 Hz, colder temperatures enhance the development of LTF, monitored either intracellularly or by myogram (Figs. 1, 2). Neuromuscular depression counteracts the effects of LTF on myogram amplitude at extremely cold temperatures (5 °C, Fig. 4), or after extended stimulation periods at less cold temperatures (10 °C). Less LTF and negligible depression are detected during stimulation at warmer temperatures (15 °–20 °C). 3. LTF is produced most effectively at and below the acclimation temperature. The temperature range favouring effective LTF development shifts with a decrease in acclimation temperature. Animals acclimated at a low temperature (7 °C) and tested at 15 °C show less rapid onset of LTF than animals acclimated at 17 °C. In addition, cold-acclimated animals show reduced ability to generate LTF at warmer temperatures and delayed onset of neuromuscular depression at cold temperatures. 4. Orconectes virilis, a northern crayfish, studied in vitro, accomplishes nearly complete compensation of LTF development during cold acclimation (Fig. 6). At warm test temperatures, cold-acclimated animals show much reduced LTF. 5. Procambarus, a crayfish from temperate regions, exhibits partial compensation of LTF development during cold acclimation when tested in vitro (Fig. 5). There is little reduction of LTF at warmer temperatures after cold acclimation. Temperature compensation is more complete in intactProcambarus than in the isolated claw (Fig. 4). 6. It is concluded that LTF can serve as a mechanism to enhance neuromuscular performance at low temperatures, and that the temperature range over which LTF appears can be modified by thermal acclimation.
