Notes: Abstract A complete theoretical treatment for the determination of thermal diffusivity of superlattices by the “mirage” technique has been performed. An effective “medium approximation” model of the thermal conductivity and thermal diffusivity of both sublayers is presented, which is different from the simple models with the thermal diffusivity or thermal conductivity in series or parallel. The numerical calculation of the transverse component of the probe beam deflection in the “mirage” effect shows that the results obtained from the complete thermal-wave theory and the “medium approximation” model, for the optically and thermally thick superlattices, are in good agreement with each other. However, the further study on the thermally thin superlattices shows that either the series or the parallel model of the thermal conductivity should be chosen according to whether the thermal impedance of the superlattice is larger or less than that of substrate, respectively.

Notes: Abstract The kinetics of the thermal decomposition of stoichiometric hydroxylapatite (HA) has been studied up to 1500°C for the purpose of determining the maximum admissible combinations of temperature and time for sintering HA. The influence of the sintering temperature on shrinkage, density and grain growth is then investigated in the temperature range from 1000 to 1450°C. Nearly theoretical density was achieved above 1300°C. A maximum fracture toughness is obtained for the samples sintered at 1300°C whereas hardness increases up to a sintering temperature of 1400°C. These results are discussed in terms of the roles of porosity and grain size.

Notes: Abstract Molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) grown GaAs films on Si substrates (0 0 1) 4° off towards 〈1 1 1〉 A and towards 〈1 1 1〉 B, were examined by means of transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results indicate that in both samples, threading dislocations in the GaAs epilayer are blocked mainly in a thin layer near the GaAs-Si interface. This thin layer is like an inner interface, consisting of pyramidal islands and is flatter on the As growth surface than that on the Ga growth surface. In the type B sample, the density of dislocations is lower, the inner interface is flatter and the number of twins is much larger than that in the type A sample.

Notes: Abstract Carboxyterminal propeptide of type I procollagen (PICP) was measured in sera from 25 patients with osteomalacia due to privational vitamin D deficiency. The mean value of serum PICP was significantly raised in patients with osteomalacia compared with 40 normal subjects (mean±SD, 161±82 ng/ml and 113±31 ng/ml, respectively; P=0.01). The raised serum PICP reflected the accelerated bone turnover in this condition as did the elevated serum total alkaline phosphatase (ALP), but the variation in values of serum PICP noted in individual patients may reflect the different stages of osteomalacia. The normalization of serum PICP and ALP, indicating a healing process of the bone disorder, needed longer time of vitamin D and calcium therapy. In contrast, adjusted serum calcium and inorganic phosphate (IP) responded and normalized rapidly. Serum PICP and total ALP appeared to behave differently in the disease and in its response to vitamin D therapy suggesting that these two markers may represent different functions of osteoblasts in osteomalacia.

Notes: Abstract The incommensurate modulated structures of high-T c superconducting phases Bi2Sr2Ca n−1Cu n O y (n=1 and 2) have been studied using symmetry properties of four-dimensional super-spacegroups and electron diffraction as well as high resolution electron microscopy are used to describe the properties of the incommensurate modulated structure in the compounds. The main results are planar monoclinic symmetryP B 2/b 11 orP B b 1 for Bi2Sr2CuO y (n=1) and orthorhombic symmetryN 111 Bbmb orN 111 Bb2b for Bi2Sr2CaCu2O y (n=2). The temperature dependence of the modulated structure of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O y has been investigated from −190°C to 800°C. Some structure properties of Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O y (n=3) are presented for comparison.

Notes: Summary The photophysical behavior of a novel monomer, p-dimethylaminobenzylmeth-acrylate (DMABMA), which can self-Initiate, polymerize and copolymerize was investigated. Results demonstrated that the exciplex which was formed between amino group and double bond in the same molecule was present during photoinitiation.

Notes: \valunit*{400}{\eV} or \valunit{1000}{\eV} ) nitrogen ion beam was used to bombard \chem{C_{60}} films to synthesize carbon nitride films. The bombarded films were examined by Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements. The experimental results showed that the destroyed carbon species chemically combined with nitrogen ions to form stable carbon nitride. An appropriate beam energy (possibly \valunit{400}{\eV} ) was proposed in this method.

Notes: Abstract Rapid growth of ultra thin oxide films (40–180Å) of silicon using a low-energy large-area electron beam has been performed with a pressure ratio of 3∶1 (O2/He) and a total pressure of 0.5–0.7 Torr. A higher oxidation rate of about 625Å2/s is found for shorter irradiation time of the e-beam in the e-beam dose range 0.75–3 Coulomb/cm2 and at lower substrate temperature 540–740°C. AES and XPS demonstrated a rapid electron-stimulated oxidation process of the Si surface. For the grown ultra thin oxide films, C-V characteristics, dielectric strength, uniformity of the film over the entire Si wafer and its thickness as a function of the processing time of the e-beam are also presented.
