Notes: Summary The effects of the inhibition of steroidogenesis by trilostane on oocyte maturation were examined by studying spontaneous maturation and fertilization in vitro. 10−6 M trilostane had no influence on the meiotic process, whether the oocytes were naked or not. At a concentration of 10−6 M and 10−7 M trilostane, low normal pronuclear formation and high polyspermy were found during in vitro fertilization. However, no retarded male pronuclear development could be detected in the trilostane-treated group. Thus, steroid producing activity within ova is apparently necessary to prevent multiple sperm penetration, but it has no effect on meiosis or the action of the so-called male pronucleus growth factor (MPGF).

Notes: Summary Intracellular pH (pH i ) of the acinar cells of the isolated, superfused mouse lacrimal gland has been measured using pH-sensitive microelectrodes. Under nonstimulated condition pH i was 7.25, which was about 0.5 unit higher than the equilibrium pH. Alterations of the external pH by ±0.4 unit shifted pH i only by ±0.08 unit. The intracellular buffering value determined by applications of 25mm NH 4 + and bicarbonate buffer solution gassed with 5% CO2/95% O2 was 26 and 46mm/pH, respectively Stimulation with 1 μm acetylcholine (ACh) caused a transient, small decrease and then a sustained increase in pH i . In the presence of amiloride (0.1mm) or the absence of Na+, application of ACh caused a significant decrease in pH i and removal of amiloride or replacement with Na+-containing saline, respectively, rapidly increased the pH i . Pretreatment with DIDS (0.2mm) did not change the pH i of the nonstimulated conditions; however, it significantly enhanced the increase in pH i induced by ACh. The present results showed that (i) there is an active acid extrusion mechanism that is stimulated by ACh; (ii) stimulation with ACh enhances the rate of acid production in the acinar cells; and (iii) the acid extrusion mechanism is inhibited by amiloride addition to and Na+ removal from the bath solution. We suggest that both Na+/H+ and HCO 3 − /Cl− exchange transport mechanisms are taking roles in the intracellular pH regulation in the lacrimal gland acinar cells.

Notes: Abstract. Laser ablation of a graphite rod and in situ separation of carbon soot by a temperature-gradient sublimation was systematically investigated using a laser-furnace apparatus. LD-TOF (laser desorption time-of-flight) mass spectra for the carbon deposits after separation show characteristic features of mass distributions mostly caused by the differences in size and structure. It was also found that some portions of the carbon deposits were strongly influenced by the experimental conditions such as the ambient temperature of an electric furnace. Laser Raman spectroscopy was also applied to deduce structural information of the carbon deposits. Furthermore, in order to characterize the laser ablation processes under exactly the same condition used for generating a high yield of fullerenes, we performed emission spectroscopic experiments by use of a high-speed video camera under several different conditions. Based on these experimental findings, the formation processes of carbon nanoparticles including fullerenes are discussed.

Notes: Summary CuGaS2 crystals grown by iodine transport exhibit room temperature photoluminescences at 2.45 eV and at 1.44 eV. The spectral distribution of the green emission is shown to be relatively well described by the calculated curve for a direct band-to-band transition withk-selection. The heterojunction formation has been tried between sulfur-treated CuGaS2 crystals and low-resistivity amorphous ZnS films prepared by sputtering at room temperature. TheI–V characteristic of the diode shows rectifying behaviour, but no injection luminescence has been observed.

Notes: Abstract Resting cells of Campylobacter jejuni were spherical whereas growing cells were mainly spiral. Content of cadaverine increased with the decrease in spherical forms prior to growth commencing but production of spermidine increased in early log phase. Cadaverine and spermidine are possibly involved in changes in cell morphology and growth, respectively.

Notes: Abstract I studied the influence of carrion burial on the interaction between Nicrophorus quadripunctatus and Nicrophorus vespilloides. In the preburial phase, N. quadripunctatus, the smaller species, occupied more carcasses than N. vespilloides, the larger species, when both species were allowed to compete for mouse carcasses. However, after carcasses were buried, N. vespilloides was more successful in protecting those it had buried, and more successful in intruding on carcasses buried by N. quadripunctatus. Direct observation supported these findings. These results may suggest that N. vespilloides is cleptoparasitic on N. quadripunctatus for carrion burial.

Notes: Abstract. We investigated the effects of conjugated estrogens as an add-back replacement drug, incadronate sodium as a bisphosphonate, and alfacalcidol as a vitamin D3 analog on femoral bone mineral density (BMD) and bone mineral content (BMC) in female rats chronically treated with the gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonist leuprorelin acetate. The chemical castration of the rats by the administration of GnRH agonist for 16 weeks reduced the BMD values to 92.3%, 91.3%, and 93.3% of those of the normal control animals in the whole femur, metaphysis, and diaphysis of the femur, respectively. The BMC value was decreased to 91.0% of that of the normal control animals by the chronic GnRH agonist treatment. However, a simultaneous 8-week administration of conjugated estrogens, bisphosphonate, and vitamin D3 analog markedly augmented the BMC values to 110.3%, 110.1%, and 114.4%, respectively, of those in the rats treated with the GnRH agonist alone. These findings indicate that antiosteoporotic agents could be useful for preventing induced osteopenia under the careful monitoring of biochemical markers of osteoblastic activity or bone resorption and BMD or BMC in patients undergoing GnRH treatment.
