Notes: Abstract The phase-conjugate reflectivity obtainable by degenerate four-wave mixing in silicon at a 1.06 μm is calculated including free-carrier absorption. A maximum reflectivity of more than 100% is possible. The dependence of the reflectivity on the signal and pump energy densities up to 70 mJ/cm2 is measured and found to agree with theory. The wave-front-correction property of DFWM is demonstrated with a lens in the signal beam.

Notes: Abstract Four catalysts, H2PtCl6-5SnCl2/γ-Al2O3 (cat-1), { H2PtCl6-5SnCl2 + xLaCl3 } / γ-Al2O3 (cat-2), (Me4N)[Pt(SnCl3)5]/ γ-Al2O3 (cat-3), and {(Me4N)[Pt(SnCl3)5] + xLaCl3} / γ-Al2O3 (cat-4) were prepared and their catalytic activities and stabilities in dehydrogenation of propane were investigated. It has been shown that the stabilities of the Pt-Sn bimetallic catalysts were improved by introducing lanthanum into the catalysts either by the conventional impregnation method with Pt- and Sn-containing salts or by using precursors derived from Pt-Sn bimetallic clusters. Results from XPS analysis indicated that addition of lanthanum could inhibit the reduction of tin in the catalysts, especially in cat-2. The distribution of pore capacity in a used cat-2 was mainly in the large and medium size range, but in a used cat-1 the distribution was mainly in the small to medium size range. Thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) showed that weight loss in the used cat-1 was much more than that in the used cat-2. The results suggested that introducing lanthanum into the Pt-Sn bimetallic catalysts could effectively prevent them from coking.

Notes: Abstract In this paper, the problem of controlling multi-fingered robot hands with rolling and sliding contacts is addressed. Several issues are explored. These issues involve the kinematic analysis and modeling, the dynamic analysis and control, and the coordination of a multi-fingered robot hand system. Based on a hand-object system in which the contacts are allowed to both roll and slide, a kinematic model is derived and analyzed. Also, the dynamic model of the hand-object system with relative motion contacts is studied. A control law is proposed to guarantee the asymptotic tracking of the object trajectory together with the desired rolling and/or sliding motions along the surface of the object. A planning approach is then introduced to minimize the contact forces so that the desired motion of the object and the relative motions between the fingers and the object can be achieved. Simulation results which support the theoretical development are presented.

Notes: Abstract The transfer process of hard X-ray radiation passing through a ‘cold’ plasma is studied in this paper under the diffusion approximation. We call such a particular transfer process a down-Comptonization. A diffusion equation describing this process is derived and its potential applications in astrophysics and radiation physics are also pointed out.

Notes: Abstract Electromagnetic scattering problem of an arbitrarily shaped ferrite cylinder is analyzed based on the finite difference-frequency domain(FD-FD) method with an effective numerical absorbing boundary condition (ABC) and the measured equation of invariance (MEI) on the terminated boundary. Compared with the method of moments (MoM), both the numerical ABC presented in this paper and the MEI result in dramatic savings in computing time and memory requirement for electrically large objects due to the sparsity of the finite difference equation. The absorbing characteristic of this numerical ABC is demonstrated numerically. The accuracy, memory needs and CPU time of the FD-FD with the numerical ABC or the MEI and the MoM are compared and then result in some important conclusions. Besides, the RCS of some ferrite cylinders are presented.

Notes: Abstract In this paper, the behavior of two collinear anti-plane shear cracks in a piezoelectric layer bonded to two half spaces is investigated by a new method for the impermeable crack face conditions. The cracks are parallel to the interfaces in the mid-plane of the piezoelectric layer. By using the Fourier transform, the problem can be solved with two pairs of triple integral equations. These equations are solved using the Schmidt method. This process is quite different from that adopted previously. Numerical examples are provided to show the effect of the geometry of the interacting cracks and the piezoelectric constants of the material upon the stress intensity factor of the cracks.

Notes: Abstract Seldom research work has been conducted on cloverleaf junction expression in a 3-dimensional city model (3DCM). One apparent reason is that the cloverleaf junction is often in a complex and enormous construction. Its main body is bestraddle in air, and has aerial intersections between its parts. This complex feature makes cloverleaf junctions quite different from buildings and terrain, it is therefore difficult to express this kind of spatial objects in the same way as for buildings and terrain. In this paper, authors analyzed spatial characteristics of cloverleaf junction, proposed an all-constraint points triangulated irregular network (TIN) algorithm to partition cloverleaf junction road surface, and developed a method to visualize cloverleaf junction road surface using TIN. Accordingly, an appropriate data structure for cloverleaf junction is proposed.

Notes: Abstract The spatio-temporal database for a collaborative decision making system supporting land subdivision is “event-driven”. Both various states of spatial objects and the events causing the objects change need to be recorded and manipulated in the database. To achieve this, the authors analyzed the characteristics of events in land subdivision process and studied how events affect the states of spatial objects. An event-based approach was proposed to develop the spatio-temporal data model for the GIS-based computer-supported collaborative work (CSCW) land subdivision system. A formal specification of event and its operators was introduced for describing the execution of events and their sequence. The spatio-overlap and time-meet constraints between parent-child parcels are proposed to represent the linkage between different states of land parcels. With this approach, events and the causal relations between events and states can be recorded and managed in the spatio-temporal database in a land subdivision system. In addition, a new way for simulating system work-flow is also suggested.

Notes: Abstract Environmental characters have been established by tritium contents in well water, coastal seawater and reservoir water collected from various places around Taiwan island. Tritium concentrations of samples were detected by a liquid scintillation analyzer TRI-CARB-LSC 2550 TR mode, with a low level standard quench curve. After samples were concentrated by electrolysis, tritium concentration was detected in optimum conditions of LLLSA. An electrolytic enrichment technique was also developed with a eurrent density of 100 mA/cm2 and 0.4–0.6% (Na2O2) electrolyte in concentrated samples. Data observed show a lower tritium concentration for coastal seawater than for wells in the same area. The tritium concentration ratio of well and coastal seawater on the western side of Taiwan is 4.000 and on the eastern side 5.801. Tritium content of reservoir water is related to the logarithm of effective volume capacity.
