Notes: Abstract. Although most New World monkeys have only one X-linked photopigment locus, many species have three polymorphic alleles at the locus. The three alleles in the squirrel monkey and capuchin have spectral peaks near 562, 550, and 535 nm, respectively, and the three alleles in the marmoset and tamarin have spectral peaks near 562, 556, and 543 nm, respectively. To determine the amino acids responsible for the spectral sensitivity differences among these pigment variants, we sequenced all exons of the three alleles in each of these four species. From the deduced amino acid sequences and the spectral peak information and from previous studies of the spectral tuning of X-linked pigments in humans and New World monkeys, we estimated that the Ala → Ser, Ile → Phe, Gly → Ser, Phe → Tyr, and Ala → Tyr substitutions at residue positions 180, 229, 233, 277, and 285, respectively, cause spectral shifts of about 5, −2, −1, 8, and 15 nm. On the other hand, the substitutions His → Tyr, Met → Val or Leu, and Ala → Tyr at positions 116, 275, and 276, respectively, have no discernible spectral tuning effect, though residues 275 and 276 are inside the transmembrane domains. Many substitutions between Val and Ile or between Val and Ala have occurred in the transmembrane domains among the New World monkey pigment variants but apparently have no effect on spectral tuning. Our study suggests that, in addition to amino acid changes involving a hydroxyl group, large changes in residue size can also cause a spectral shift in a visual pigment.

Notes: Abstract Blue cone pigment (BCP) is one of three types of cone photoreceptors responsible for normal colour vision. In this study, the BCP gene has been localised to chromosome 7q31.3-32 by fluorescent in situ hybridisation of cosmid clones containing the gene. This is consistent with previous mapping of the BCP gene to chromosome 7q31-35.

Notes: Abstract In analysing wood creep during moisture changes, various adjustments can be made to the data, including corrections for density and for dimensional changes. Provided that the variation of elastic compliance with moisture content is known, the elastic compliance can be separated from the total compliance to give a “reduced” creep compliance. Elastic compliance data can be formed into a graphical chart based on moisture content and the compliance at a single known moisture content. Good correlations have been obtained between reduced creep compliances for various modes of moisture change and the unloaded axial movement coefficientsβ L. Ifβ L could be considered as a measure of a number of internal “events”, related to hydrogen bonding, and taking place during moisture changes; then the number of these events might also be related to moisture-induced creep changes.

Notes: Abstract The Euroanalysis VII conference in Vienna included a two-day session: Quality Assurance in Analytical Chemistry. The contributions comprised 15 lectures devoted to: intra-laboratory quality measures, inter-laboratory control, formal aspects and accreditation and implementation. The paper presents an overview of the main items developed by the contributors.

Notes: Summary The taxonomy of those Tylenchorynchinae which have longitudinal lines or ridges on the cuticle is discussed. Dolichorhynchus is restricted to species with four incisures in the lateral field, lateral vulval flaps and a terminally notched bursa. D. prophasmis n. sp. is described. Neodolichorhynchus n. g. is erected for those species previously in Dolichorhynchus which have no lateral vulval flaps and a normal bursa, including: N. microphasmis (Loof, 1959) n.comb., N. judithae (Andrássy, 1962) n.comb., N. sulcatus (de Guiran, 1967) n.comb., and N. gladiolatus (Fortuner & Amougou, 1973) n.comb. Tessellus n.g. is proposed for T. claytoni (Steiner, 1937) n.comb. and T. pachys (Thorne & Malek, 1968) n.comb. the only remaining Tylenchorhynchus species with longitudinal cuticular lines. They are characterized by a rounded non-offset lip region, four incisures in the lateral field and a cuticular annulation divided into prominent blocks by deep longitudinal cuticular lines.

Notes: Abstract This paper describes a new design of bending creep machine for accurate measurements of mechano-sorptive creep. Tests on two species of pine showed that at low stresses bending and tension gave similar results. It is shown that the mechano-sorptive creep susceptibility correlates with the mean microfibrillar angle of the S2 layer in a continuous relation that includes two species of pine, including one which showed evidence of compression wood; thus giving further evidence of the importance of inter-microfibril stresses in the S2 layer in mechano-sorptive creep. Accordingly, mechano-sorptive creep susceptibility also correlated continuously with elastic compliance; thus encouraging the possibility of the selection of non-susceptible material by machine stress grading. These two correlations also diminish the main obstacle to research on mechano-sorptive creep, the excessive variability of the material and the consequent difficulty of matching of samples.

Notes: Abstract Differences in the Cd-induced levels of liver metallothionein in inbred mouse strains are described. All strains examined show substantial increases in metallothionein production after the administration of 25 µmol CdCl2/kg, but the maximal levels achieved after 48 hr differed such that CBA/Ca〉DBA/2〉C57BL/10=C3H/He〉BALB/c. These differences were generally not paralleled by differences in the amount of Cd2+ bound to metallothionein or in the total tissue content of Cd2+. Incorporation of [35S] cysteine into metallothionein suggests that differential synthesis affecting both isoproteins (MT1 and MT2) equally is largely responsible for the strain difference between C57BL/10 and DBA/2, and interstrain crosses between these two strains reveal codominant inheritance of Cd2+-induced metallothionein level and indicate that a single gene, either linked or identical to the cdm gene on chromosome 3, is involved.

Notes: Abstract Differences in Zn-induced levels of hepatic metallothionein (MT) in inbred strains of the mouse are described. Three low-producing strains, C57BL/6, C57BL/10, and NIH, are identified, while C3H and CBA display the highest levels of hepatic MT following Zn treatment. These interstrain differences affect not only the level of MT protein, but also the amount of MT-bound Zn and the total hepatic Zn concentration. Both MT isoforms are equally affected. A similar interstrain difference following Cu treatment is present in C3H and C57BL/6. The origin of these interstrain differences is discussed.
