Notes: Abstract  Transition of hemoglobin (Hb) from larval to adult types during the metamorphosis in a salamander Hynobius retardatus has been reported to occur almost independently of thyroid activity, in contrast to the case with many amphibians. In order to obtain further information on the mechanism of the transition in H. retardatus, larval and adult globin cDNAs were cloned, and the globin gene expression was analyzed in normally developing and metamorphosis-arrested animals. Northern hybridization and RT-PCR revealed that larval globin genes were initially expressed 5 days before hatching, and unexpectedly remained expressed even in juveniles 2 years old. The adult globin gene was expressed 19 days after hatching, much earlier than the initiation of morphological metamorphosis. Furthermore, the pattern of globin gene expression in metamorphosis-arrested larvae was almost identical to that in normal controls, suggesting that the transition occurs independently of thyroid hormones. In larvae recovering from anemia, precocious Hb transition, which occurs in Xenopus laevis and Rana catesbeiana, did not occur in H. retardatus. In situ hybridization convincingly demonstrated that the erythropoietic sites are the ventral blood island and the dorsolateral plate at the prehatching stage. During the ontogeny they changed to the liver, kidney, and spleen and were finally restricted to the spleen. Single erythroid cells expressed concurrently larval and adult globin genes, as demonstrated by double in situ hybridization. Thus the transition occurred within a single erythroid cell population, a unique characteristic of H. retardatus.

Notes: Summary α-MSH (0.1, 1, 10 μg) was administered intracerebroventricularly and its action on pain sensitivity was investigated by the hot-plate method in mice. α-MSH produced dose-dependent analgesia and this analgesic effect was prevented by naloxone (1 mg/kg, s.c.). It is possible that α-MSH may play a role in the mechanism of pain through endogeneous opioid systems.

Notes: Abstract The Cu concentration was about 40 times higher in the liver of LEC (Long-Evans with a cinnamon-like coat color) rats aged 77 days (227.5±21.6 μg/g liver) than in Fischer rats (5.2±0.1 μg/g liver). However, in the kidney and brain of the LEC rats, Cu concentrations were lower than in these organs of the Fischer rats. Cu concentration in the hepatic metallothionein fraction was about 130 times higher in the LEC rats than in the Fischer rats. The LEC rats showed markedly low concentrations of Cu in the serum and bile. It seems likely that excretion of Cu from the liver into the bile and blood (as ceruloplasmin) is inherently lacking in the LEC rat.

Notes: Abstract The effect on energy metabolism of delayed absorption of starch by inhibition of α-amylase was examined by considering levels of plasma glucose and 3-hydroxybutyric acid (3-OHBA) in rats. Addition of α-amylase inhibitor (αAI) to a high starch diet delayed the plasma glucose response after feeding: peak plasma glucose levels in the control group occurred 15 min after feeding, whereas in the αAI group this peak did not occur until 30 min after. The total plasma glucose response was not different between the two groups. Plasma 3-OHBA levels 1 day after food restriction increased approximately five-fold in both groups. After 3 days of food restriction, the αAI group maintained the same level of plasma 3-OHBA as after 1 day of food restriction, while the control group showed significantly decreased levels of 3-OHBA. After 3 days of food restriction, plasma insulin levels were significantly decreased in the αAI group compared with the corresponding levels of the control group and with levels before the restriction. There was no significant difference in body weight between the two groups. These findings suggest that delayed hyperglycemia due to delayed absorption of starch following αAI loading may attenuate insulin secretion, leading to altered metabolism of 3-OHBA during the delayed response to energy deficit.

Notes: Abstract The nightglow OH(9,4) and O2 atmospheric (0,1) band emission intensities and their rotational temperatures T(OH) and T(O2), respectively, observed at Cachoeira Paulista (23° S, 45°W), Brazil, during the period from October 1989 to December 1990, have been analyzed to study the nighttime mesospheric energy loss rates through the radiations from the vibrationally excited OH* and electronically excited O*2 bands. The total emission rates of the OH Meinel bands, O2 atmospheric (0,0) and O2 infrared atmospheric (1Δg) bands were calculated using reported data for the relative band intensities $I_{(\nu^{''}, \nu^{'})}/I_{(9,4)}, I_{O_{2}A(0,0)}/I_{O_{2}A(0,1)}$ and $I_{O_2 (^1{\Delta}_g)}/I_{O_{2}A(0,1)}$ . It was found that there is a minimum in equivalent energy loss rate by the OH* Meinel bands during December/January (equivalent energy loss rate of 0.39 K/day*, where day* means averaged over the night) and maximum in equivalent energy loss rate during September (equivalent energy loss rate of 0.98 K/day*). Energy loss rate by the O*2 radiation, on the other hand, is weaker than that by the OH* Meinel bands, showing equivalent energy loss rates of 0.12 K/day* and 0.22 K/day* during January and September, respectively.

Notes: Abstract In December 1995, a campaign was carried out to study the day-to-day variability in precursor signatures to large-scale ionospheric F-region plasma irregularities, using optical diagnostic techniques, near the magnetic equator in the Brazilian sector. Three instruments were operated simultaneously: (a) an all-sky (180° field of view) imaging system for observing the OI 630 nm nightglow emission at Alcântara (2.5°S, 44.4°W); (b) a digisonde (256-Lowell) at São Luis (2.6°S, 44.2°W); and (c) a multi-channel tilting filter-type zenith photometer for observing the OI 630 nm and mesospheric nightglow emissions at Fortaleza (3.9°S, 38.4°W). During the period December 14–18, 1995 (summer in the southern hemisphere), a good sequence of the OI 630 nm imaging observations on five consecutive nights were obtained, which are presented and discussed in this study. The observing period was geomagnetically quiet to moderate (Kp = 0+ to 5+ Dst = 18 nT to −37 nT). On four nights, out of the five observation nights, the OI 630 nm imaging pictures showed formations of transequatorial north-south aligned intensity depletions, which are the optical signatures of large-scale ionospheric F-region plasma bubbles. However, considerable day-to-day variability in the onset and development of the plasma depleted bands was observed. On one of the nights it appears that the rapid uplifting of the F-layer in the post-sunset period, in conjunction with gravity wave activity at mesospheric heights, resulted in generation of very strong plasma bubble irregularities. One of the nights showed an unusual formation of north-south depleted band in the western sector of the imaging system field of view, but the structure did not show any eastward movement, which is a normal characteristic of plasma bubbles. This type of irregularity structure, which probably can be observed only by wide-angle imaging system, needs more investigations for a better understanding of its behaviour.
