    Notes: Diel variation in specific hydraulic conductivity (ks) was recorded in petioles of two savanna tree species, Schefflera macrocarpa and Caryocar brasiliense, from central Brazil. These two species have compound leaves with long petioles (10–30 cm). In both species, petiole ks decreased sharply with increasing transpiration rates and declining leaf water potentials (ψL) during the morning. Petiole ks increased during the afternoon while the plants were still transpiring and the water in the non-embolized vessels was still under tension. Dye experiments confirmed that in both species diel variation in ks was associated with embolism formation and repair. When transpiration was prevented in individual leaves, their petiole ks and water potential remained close to their maximum values during the day. When minimum daily ψL on selected branches was experimentally lowered by 0.2–0.6 MPa, the rate of ks recovery during the afternoon was slower in comparison with control branches. Several field manipulations were performed to identify potential mechanisms involved in the refilling of embolized petiole vessels. Removal of the cortex or longitudinal incisions in the cortex prevented afternoon recovery of ks and refilling of embolized vessels. When distilled water was added to petiole surfaces that had been abraded to partially remove the cuticle, ks increased sharply during the morning and early afternoon. Evidence of starch to sugar conversion in the starch sheath cells surrounding the vascular bundles of the petioles was observed during periods of rapid transpiration when the abundance of starch granules in the starch sheath cells surrounding the vascular bundles decreased. Consistent with this, petiole sugar content was highest in the early afternoon. The most parsimonious explanation of the field observations and the experimental results was that an increase in osmotically active solutes in cells outside the vascular bundles at around midday leads to water uptake by these cells. However, the concurrent increase in tissue volume is partially constrained by the cortex, resulting in a transient pressure imbalance that may drive radial water movement in the direction of the embolized vessels, thereby refilling them and restoring water flow. This study thus presents evidence that embolism formation and repair are two distinct phenomena controlled by different variables. The degree of embolism is a function of tension, and the rate of refilling a function of internal pressure imbalances.

    Notes: Abstract Commercially available and self-made photoionization detectors have been studied in a simple flow manifold without chromatographic column. The self-made detector allowed the independent variation of the detector volume, the electrode surface area and a selective irradiation of the anodes and cathodes. The photoionization of ethanol and acetone has been measured in hydrogen as carrier gas. All experimental results were consistent with a model based upon a photoionization proceeding in the adsorption layer of the electrodes as the main signal generating process. It has been shown that the photoionization of molecules in the gas phase plays only a marginal role.

    Notes: Abstract The well-known method for the determination of selenium(IV), which is based on the cathodic stripping voltammetry of copper(I) selenide, has been adapted for application at the thin-film mercury electrode on glassy carbon (TFME). Insufficient reproducibility and sensitivity have been overcome by using a 0.1 mol/L HClO4 electrolyte solution containing 0.02 mol/L thiocyanate ions. Thiocyanate ions have been found to increase the peak height of the selenium response and shift it to more positive potentials. This behaviour is explained by an adsorption of SCN– at the interface glassy carbon/Cu2Se and its action as an electron transfer catalyst between glassy carbon and copper(I) selenide. A 3σ-detection limit of 75 ng/L Se(IV) has been achieved. The relative standard deviation is 5.2% at 5 μg/L selenium(IV). The influence of cadmium(II), arsenic(III), zinc(II), iron(III) and lead(II) ions on the selenium response has been studied. In case of lead ions, a new signal occurred at more negative potentials than the reduction of Cu2Se. This signal, which is probably due to the reduction of PbSe, can also be used for the determination of selenium(IV).

    Notes: Abstract  We report here refined values of the transformation enthalpy for xanthoconite to proustite (54.81 kJ/mol) and pyrostilpnite to pyrargyrite (40.32 kJ/mol). Additionally, the enthalpy for the transformation of trechmannite to smithite (5.82 kJ/mol) has been determined. The refinement was possible by taking into account a previously unknown dependence of electrochemical signals on the amount of substance undergoing the reduction process.

    Notes: Abstract A new method is described for the determination of ammonium in aqueous solutions with electrodes modified by Prussian blue (PB). The specific voltammetric response of PB-modified electrodes to ammonium ions is used for their analytical determination. In the presence of ammonium ions, a concentration-dependent inhibition of the low-spin iron(II/III) system of PB occurs. Only thallium and rubidium ions cause similar inhibition. A useful electrochemical determination method is thus available for detecting ammonium ions in the presence of frequently interfering potassium and sodium ions. Paraffin-impregnated graphite electrodes modified with a mechanically transferred PB layer and bulk-modified PB-composite electrodes are studied. The method is applicable within a concentration range which extends from 4 × 10−5 mol/l to 10−2 mol/l NH4 +. The composite electrode is used in an electrochemical flow-through system in conjunction with the Kjeldahl method.
