    Notes: Abstract Strained layer GaAs.95P.05 photo cathodes are presented, which emit electron beams spinpolarized to a degree of P = 75% typically. Quantum yields around QE = 0.4% are observed routinely. The figure of merit P2 × QE = 2.3 × 10−3 is comparable to that of the best strained layer cathodes reported in literature. The optimum wavelength of irradiating light around 830 nm is in convenient reach of Ti:sapphire lasers or diode lasers respectively. The cathodes are produced using MOCVD-techniques. A GaAs.55P.45-GaAs.85P.15 superlattice structure prevents the migration of dislocations from the substrate and bottom layers to the strained overlayer. The surface is protected by an arsenic layer so that no chemical cleaning is necessary before installation into vacuum. The source of polarized electrons attached to the Mainz race track microtron MAMI works with such cathodes now. More than 1000 hours beamtime have been performed successfully.

    Lack of interaction between meloxicam and warfarin in healthy volunteers (1997)

    Notes: Abstract Objective: The effect of multiple oral doses of meloxicam 15 mg on the pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics of warfarin was investigated in healthy male volunteers. Warfarin was administered in an individualized dose to achieve a stable reduction in prothrombin times calculated as International Normalized Ratio (INR) values. Then INR- and a drug concentration-time profile was determined. For the interaction phase, meloxicam was added for 7 days and then INR measurements and the warfarin drug profiles were repeated for comparison. Overall, warfarin treatment lasted for 30 days. Results: Warfarin and meloxicam were well tolerated by healthy volunteers in this study. Thirteen healthy volunteers with stable INR values entered the interaction phase. Prothrombin times, expressed as mean INR values, were not significantly altered by concomitant meloxicam treatment, being 1.20 for warfarin alone and 1.27 for warfarin with meloxicam cotreatment. R- and S-warfarin pharmacokinetics were similar for both treatments. Geometric mean (% gCV) AUCSS values for the more potent S-enantiomer were 5.07 mg · h · l−1 (27.5%) for warfarin alone and 5.64 mg · h · l−1 (28.1%) during the interaction phase. Respective AUCSS values for R-warfarin were 7.31 mg · h · l−1 (43.8%) and 7.58 mg · h · l−1 (39.1%). Conclusion: The concomitant administration of the new non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) meloxicam affected neither the pharmacodynamics nor the pharmacokinetics of a titrated warfarin dose. A combination of both drugs should nevertheless be avoided and, if necessary, INR monitoring is considered mandatory.

    Notes: Abstract The biomass of three desert plants, Amsonia kearneyana, A. grandiflora and A. palmeri, was used for the production of glucose and ethanol by simultaneous saccharification and fermentation techniques. Ethanol yields were 0.46 g g-1 for A. keurneyana, 0.51 g g-1 for A. grandiflora and 0.51 g g-1 for A. palmeri. When the plant materials were saccharified into glucose only, the yields obtained were 0.35 g g-1 for A. kearneyana, 0.39 g g-1 for A. grandiflora and 0.22 g g-1 for A. palmeri.

La nouvelle associationNanaia sp./O. aurantiaca ne sera probablement pas vouée au succès, bien que des essais de plein champ devraient être développés pour le confirmer, un vaste programme d'élevage et de lâcher serait une perte de temps et un gaspillage d'argent et d'effort.
    Notes: Abstract Nanaia sp. was collected onOpuntia pascoensis Britton & Rose in Peru and introduced into South Africa for biological control ofOpuntia aurantiaca Lindley. Since this is a new insect-plant association the chances of successful biological control could theoretically be enhanced. However, pre-release insectary studies showed that apart from the adverse affects of insectary rearing, larval development was slower, less larvae survived, smaller adults emerged and reproduction was suppressed onO. aurantiaca compareded toO. pascoensis. The new association ofNanaia sp. onO. aurantiaca will probably not succeed and, although field trials should be conducted to confirm this, an extensive mass-rearing and release programme would be a waste of time, finances and effort.

    Notes: Zusammenfassung Der Titer von Ecdyson und Ecdysteron in Heuschrecken (Locusta migratoria) des V. Larvenstadiums wurde getrennt bestimmt. Ecdysteron herrscht zur Zeit des Titermaximums vor. Durch Injektion von radioaktivem Ecdyson wird gezeigt, dass dies durch ein Ansteigen der Steroid-20-Hydroxylase-Aktivität verursacht wird. Die Ausscheidung von Häutungshormonen mit dem Kot sorgt für das Sinken der Häutungshormon-Konzentration in den Tieren.
