Notes: 180 MeV Cu11+ irradiation was done on the c-axis grain oriented Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 tapes. Irradiation enhanced hysteresis in dc magnetization curves, especially in high magnetic fields. The irreversibility line can be moved to higher field by irradiation. Transport Jc is also enhanced by the irradiation of the small fluences. The irradiation produced large (∼100 nm) and small (∼5 nm) defects. They are effective for flux pinning in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8.

Notes: In order to investigate low-energy excitations below 10 meV, inelastic neutron-scattering measurements have been carried out on various organic amorphous polymers at 10 and 50 K and three inorganic glasses at 150 and 295 K. It was found that a broad excitation peak is observed for all amorphous materials in the ω range of 1.5–4.0 meV irrespective of different chemical structures. On the other hand, highly crystalline polyethylene with a degree of crystallinity 0.96 shows no such broad peak, indicating that the low-energy excitation is characteristic of amorphous materials. We have employed an asymmetric double-well potential as a common origin for the low-energy excitation in amorphous materials and analyzed the results of amorphous polyisobutylene to confirm validity of this model and alternatively to determine parameters of the potential. Analysis of the temperature dependence of the inelastic-scattering intensity of the low-energy excitation leads to a concept of phonon-assisted tunneling in the asymmetric double-well potential.

Notes: In semiconductor technology, TiN thin film elements can be used as diffusion barrier between a metallic layer and a silicon oxide dielectric. Plasma application during the growth of TiN thin films modifies the microstructure of these films and consequently alters their physical properties. But details of the effect of plasma application on the evolution of the film microstructure and correlations between this evolution and the physical properties are still unclear. To clarify the correlations, the microstructure of a series of TiN thin films, deposited using an organometallic chemical vapor deposition technique combined with plasma treatments has been analyzed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The films were obtained by repeated fabrication sequences consisting of limited film growth followed by the application of a N2/H2 gaseous plasma with various powers and duration times and are actually stackings of plasma-treated elementary layers. TEM analysis shows that these films are made of nanocrystallites and that whereas crystallites are randomly oriented when no plasma is applied, short-time plasma treatments induce a tendency to 〈200〉 texture and longer treatments progressively rotate the direction of texture to 〈220〉. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We investigated the magnetoimpedance (MI) effect for the soft magnetic nanocrystalline Fe74SixB22−xCu1Nb3 (x=4–18) alloys, and also the relationship between the magnetic properties and the MI effect. The annealing temperature dependence of the MI ratio corresponds to that of the permeability of longitudinal direction of the samples. However, the Si concentration dependence of the longitudinal permeability is different from that of the MI ratio. The maximum MI ratio and the highest field sensitivity for the sample with x=16 after annealing at 570 °C for 1 h are 67% and 23%/Oe, respectively. The MI effect is affected by the magnetic uniaxial anisotropy which is along the longitudinal direction of the ribbon samples. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract Angular dependence of light scattering from aqueous NaCl solutions of dimethyloleylamine oxide has been measured in the presence of NaCl from 5×10−4 M to 10−1 M at 25 °C. The molecular weight and radius of gyration of micelles increase with increasing micelle concentration and reach constant values, suggesting occurrence of the sphere-rod equilibrium dependent on the micelle concentration. With increasing NaCl concentration, rodlike micelles are larger in molecular weight and become longer. The micelles formed at NaCl concentrations higher than 10−3 M are nearly monodisperse when the micelle concentration is high. Rodlike micelles of dimethyloleylamine oxide in 10−2 M and 5 × 10−2 M NaCl solutions have molecular weights of 4,760,000 and 6,900,000, respectively, and behave as semi-flexible or wormlike chains. In 5×10−2 M NaCl they have a contour length of 5750 Å and a persistence length of 1760 Å. These micelle parameters correspond to the end-to-end distance of 3780 Å and the number of Kuhn's statistical segments of 1.64. The large aggregation number of the rodlike micelles is induced by the strong cohesion of long hydrocarbon chains in solution, and their flexibility is caused by the hydration of amine oxide groups.

Notes: Abstract Angular dependence of light scattering has been measured for aqueous solutions of dimethyloleylamine oxide in the presence of HCl and NaCl. In micellar solutions more concentrated than 0.1×10−2 g cm−3, rodlike micelles are dominantly formed, and their properties are strongly reflected in the characteristics of the solutions. The aggregation number, radius of gyration and even flexibility of the rodlike micelles increase with the addition of HCl as well as NaCl. The increase of HCl concentration up to 10−3 N makes the aggregation number of rodlike micelles as large as 58,000, when 0.01 M NaCl is present. The large micelle size would be stabilized by the dehydration of the amine oxide group and the hydrogen bonding between nonprotonated and protonated molecules in a micelle. In aqueous solutions without HCl and NaCl or in their presence at very low concentrations, the light scattering is subject to the effects of both external and internal interferences. The effect of external interference can be separated from the effect of internal interference by applying the Zernike-Prins equation to the observed angular dependence of light scattering. Then the second virial coefficient and the pair interaction potential of rodlike micelles can be derived by means of certain approximate methods. The addition of HCl to 10−3 N makes both repulsive and attractive forces stronger and the resulting potential well deeper, but the addition of NaCl depresses such an effect of HCl considerably.

Notes: Abstract Non-cuprate layered perovskite Sr2RuO4, which is an analogue of (La,Sr)2CuO4, exhibits superconductivity below Tc≈1K. We have synthesized a new system Sr3−xCaxRu2Oy and found the solubility of Ca to be at least as much as x = 2. These samples are not superconductive down to 2K but magnetically ordered. The x dependence of the lattice parameters and that of Tmag clearly indicate that there are at least two distinct structural phases in Sr3−xCaxRu2Oy.

Notes: Abstract 195Pt-,139La- and11B-NMR have been investigated in quaternary RM2B2C (R=Y, La, Th and M=Ni, Pd, Pt). The electric quadrupole frequency of139La changes more than 5 times in magnitude from M=Ni to Pt, indicating that the hybridization of La-5d and d-electrons of M-element changes largely. The analysis of11B and139La spectra shows also the large change of the magnetic anisotropy with R and M element, i.e., χII c〉χII ab in LaNi2B2C, but χII c〉χII ab YNi2B2C.The data of T1T and K of195Pt and11B are consistent with the band effects and with no evidence of strong antiferromagnetic correlation effects.
