Notes: Abstract Experimental and modelling investigations of the hydrodynamics of the internal flow structure in the circulating particulate bed electrode (CPBE) are reported. The CPBE, a hybrid between an expanded packed bed and an entrained/fluidized bed, is particularly well suited for many electrochemical applications such as metal recovery and pollution treatments for metal containing effluents. This study deals with the fundamental hydrodynamics and particle dynamics of the CPBE. A mathematical model of the CPBE has been developed which successfully describes the motion of the particles and the fluid in the bed. It is shown that many of the flow characteristics of the circulating bed can be predicted using fundamental data. The validity of the proposed model was demonstrated by comparing predictions to experimental observations of several bed characteristics under various operating conditions.

Notes: Abstract The present study disclosed the cross-reactivity between Bermuda grass pollen (BGP) and other grass pollens using monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) and polyclonal antiserum. MAb 9–13, directed against a group of minor allergens of BGP (Cyn d Bd68K, 48K, 38K) was found to cross-react with extracts of ten other grass pollens. Immunoblotting assays illustrated that MAb 9–13 cross-reacted with multiple components of most of these pollens, and the major cross-reactive components had molecular weights of 29–36 kD. The cross-reactivity between BGP andLol pI, the group I allergen of rye grass pollen, was further evaluated;Lol pI was recognized by MAb 9–13, but not by our MAbs/polyclonal antiserum againstCyn dI, the major allergen of BGP. These results suggest that the epitope recognized by MAb 9–13 is a common (C) epitope shared byLol pI andCyn d Bd68K, 48K, 38K, andCyn dI does not share significant antigenicity withLol pI. In a modified radio-allergosorbent test, IgE antibodies in the serum of BGP-allergic patients reacted mildly with C-epitope-bearing components of both BGP and rye grass pollens, and this binding could be blocked specifically by MAb 9–13. This suggests that in addition to an antigenic cross-reaction, the C epitope can also lead to an allergenic cross-reaction.

Notes: Abstract Amylin is normally secreted in a regulated fashion by the pancreatic β-cells in parallel with insulin and has been reported to have bone-conserving properties. Type I diabetes mellitus results in a low-turnover osteopenia in the presence of decreased amylin, which is in contrast to type II diabetes where less bone loss, in the presence of high amylin levels, occurs. We investigated the effects of amylin on bone mineral metabolism in normal and dibetic (streptozotocin-induced) rats, in order to ascertain whether amylin would modify the streptozotocin-induced diabetic osteopenia. Tenweek-old male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomized as follows: group A (n=18) received normal saline; group B (n=18) received amylin; group C, diabetic rats (n=23), received normal saline; and group D, diabetic rats (n=23), received amylin. Amylin (100 pmol/100 g b. w.) was administered by a daily subcutaneus injection. Double calceinlabeled tibiae were removed for histomorphometric analysis followed sacrifice on day 19. Results showed no difference in blood ionized calcium between groups. Blood glucose remained above 600 mg/dl in the diabetic animals and was not affected by the administration of amylin. Serum osteocalcin, insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), parathyroid hormone (PTH), and 1,25 dihydroxyvitamin D [1,25(OH)2D] were significantly lower in the diabetic rats compared with control group A by day 19. Amylin produced higher levels of serum osteocalcin in group B on day 9 (P〈0.05) compared with controls but returned to control values (group A) by day 19; no such change occurred in the diabetic group. Amylin administration did not influence IGF-1, 1,25(OH)2D or PTH levels compared with the untreated animals. Analysis of the bone histomorphometry showed a low-turnover osteopenia in the diabetic animals. Amylin administration resulted in a significant increase in bone volume in the normal rats, group B (P〈0.05), but was unable to significantly alter this parameter in the diabetic animals. In conclusion, amylin has a beneficial effect on the bone metabolism of the rat in vivo by increasing bone volume. It is, however, unable to overcome the osteopenia caused by streptozotocin-induced diabetes mellitus at the doses used in this study.

Notes: Abstract Despite the long-standing and widespread use of the symbiotic association between the aquatic fern Azolla and its cyanobacterial symbiontAnabaena azollae to augment nitrogen supplies in rice paddy soils, very little is known about taxonomic aspects of the symbiosis. The two partners normally remain associated throughout vegetative and reproductive development, limiting the opportunities for interchanges. We have used monoclonal antibodies and DNA/DNA hybridization techniques to show that the cyanobacterial partner is not uniform throughout the genus Azolla, and that substantial diversification has occurred. With these procedures it will be possible to characterize genotypes of the cyanobacterium and to monitor experiments aimed at synthesizing new combinations ofAzolla species andAnabaena azollae strains.

Notes: Abstract This paper summarizes recent achievements in exploiting new biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) systems in rice fields, improving their management, and integrating them into rice farming systems. The inoculation of cyanobacteria has been long recommended, but its effect is erratic and unpredictable. Azolla has a long history of use as a green manure, but a number of biological constraints limited its use in tropical Asia. To overcome these constraints, the Azolla-Anabaena system as well as the growing methods were improved. Hybrids between A. microphylla and A. filiculoides (male) produced higher annual biomass than either parent. When Anabaena from high temperature-tolerant A. microphylla was transferred to Anabaena-free A. filiculoides, A. filiculoides became tolerant of high temperature. Azolla can have multiple purposes in addition to being a N source. An integrated Azolla-fish-rice system developed in Fujian, China, could increase farmers' income, reduce expenses, and increase ecological stability. A study using Azolla labeled with 15N showed the reduction of N losses by fish uptake of N. The Azolla mat could also reduce losses of urea N by lowering floodwater-pH and storing a part of applied N in Azolla. Agronomically useful aquatic legumes have been explored within Sesbania and Aeschynomene. S. rostrata can accumulate more than 100kg N ha-1 in 45 d. Its N2 fixation by stem nodules is more tolerant of mineral N than that by root nodules, but the flowering of S. rostrata is sensitive to photoperiod. Aquatic legumes can be used in rainfed rice fields as N scavengers and N2 fixers. The general principle of integrated uses of BNF in rice-farming systems is shown.
