    Notes: Summary The hemocytes oftu-Sz ts melanotic tumor larvae ofDrosophila melanogaster encapsulate heterospecific and surface-modified homospecific tissue implants, but do not encapsulate unmodified homospecific implants (R. Rizki and Rizki 1980). In the present study we usedtu-Sz ts hosts to assay changes in larval fat body surfaces during development. Donor fat bodies from various ages of larvae were accepted (remained unencapsulated) intu-Sz ts hosts whereas fat bodies from donors with everted spiracles and all subsequent stages of development that were tested were rejected (encapsulated). Since the demarcation between acceptance and rejection by thetu-Sz ts blood cells did not coincide with the gross morphological changes that appear in the fat body during metamorphosis (dissolution of the basement membrane and dispersal of the freed fat body cells at pupation), we compared acceptable and nonacceptable fat body surfaces by three other methods. Fat body surface ultrastructure was examined, fat bodies were treated with fluorescein isothiocyanate-conjugated lectins, and fat body surfaces were reacted with a monoclonal antibody specific for basement membrane. These approaches did not uncover fat body surface changes associated with eversion of the anterior spiracles, suggesting that recognition of tissue surface heterogeneities by the insect hemocytes exceeds the resolving power of the other three methods. However, the monoclonal antibody fails to bind to the basement membrane ofD. virilis larvae, whose fat body is always rejected intu-Sz ts hosts. This supports our suggestion that the molecular architecture of the basement membrane may be important in eliciting the encapsulation response.

    Notes: Abstract The rate of uptake of Endosulfan by Mytilus edulis L. exposed to pesticide concentrations of 0.1, 0.5, and 1.0 mg/l, and its subsequent elution on removal to clean sea water, was investigated. Higher residue levels were recorded for mussels exposed to higher concentrations of the pesticide, but concentration factors were reduced. There was a rapid initial fall in tissue residue levels on transfer to clean sea water due, it is suggested, to elution of Endosulfan adsorbed on particulate matter assimilated in the gut. The spawning period was prolonged at higher concentrations and, at 1.0 mg/l, the onset of spawning was delayed, possibly due to interference with gamonic action. At 0.1 mg/l, the minor protraction of the spawning period may reflect the effect of experimental tank conditions. No seasonal trend was obvious, and there was an exaggeration of the expected fall in condition in mussels exposed to higher concentrations of Endosulfan. In controls, the expected seasonal trend was reduced.

    Notes: Abstract Data are presented on growth and reproductive rates of Littorina rudis Maton from 3 contrasted habitats: a sheltered saltmarsh, a moderately sheltered boulder shore and an exposed cliff face. Growth was fastest in L. rudis from the moderately sheltered boulder shore, followed closely by snails from the sheltered saltmarsh. Growth was much slower and the asymptotic size much less in L. rudis from the exposed cliff face, this being attributed to the reduced time available for foraging caused by longer and more erratic periods when the substratum dries out. Eggs extracted from the brood chambers of the saltmarsh L. rudis took about 72 d to hatch in the laboratory at 10°C. No seasonal trend was detected in the percentage of sexually mature snails, which fluctuated erratically round about 54 to 99% in each population. Similarly, the ratio of females: males fluctuated erratically about 1.0. The number of eggs and embryos held in the brood chamber peaked in May–June and birth rates (release of young from the brood chamber) peaked in July-August. Following a lull in August, the brood chamber contents were maintained at moderately high levels throughout the winter, whereas the birth rates declined to very low levels. These differences in the seasonal cycle of brood chamber contents and birth rates were probably caused by seasonal differences in embryological development rate and in the propensity of the young to leave the brood chamber. Fecundity increased with parental size and, because of this, the smaller, slower growing exposed-shore L. rudis had much lower potential fecundities than L. rudis from the other shores. However, the size-specific fecundity of the exposedshore L. rudis was about 1.7 times that of L. rudis on the more sheltered shores. This difference was apparently not attributable to smaller young or to a greater capacity of the brood chamber in the exposedshore L. rudis, and must therefore have been caused by higher rates of egg production. 18% of mature females from the boulder shore and 5% of those from the cliff face were oviparous, having a jelly gland in place of the brood chamber.

    Notes: Abstract For an assemblage of fishes inhabiting a warm temperate, rock reef near San Diego, California (USA), a series of censuses were made based on frequency of occurrence and standard numerical counts. These data were then compared with a parallel study based on the rapid visual technique (RVT) of Jones and Thompson (1978). Because the RVT ranks abundances according to frequency of encounter and disregards variations in the spatial distributions of different species, the method overemphasizes the importance of widespread albeit rare fishes but under-emphasizes patchy although abundant species. The discussion considers the relative merits of the RVT method for characterizing assemblages of fishes on temperate rock reefs and on tropical coral reefs.

    Notes: Abstract Transition from low salt water to sea water of the euryhaline fish, Fundulus heteroclitus, involves a rapid signal that induces salt secretion by the gill chloride cells. An increase of 65 mOsm in plasma osmolarity was found during the transition. The isolated, chloridecell-rich opercular epithelium of sea-water-adapted Fundulus exposed to 50 mOsm mannitol on the basolateral side showed a 100% increase in chloride secretion, which was inhibited by bumetanide 10−4 m and 10−4 m DPC (N-Phenylanthranilic acid). No effect of these drugs was found on apical side exposure. A Na+/H+ exchanger, demonstrated by NH4Cl exposure, was inhibited by amiloride and its analogues and stimulated by IBMX, phorbol esters, and epithelial growth factor (EGF). Inhibition of the Na+/H+ exchanger blocks the chloride secretion increase due to basolateral hypertonicity. A Cl−/HCO 3 − exchanger was also found in the chloride cells, inhibited by 10−4 m DIDS but not involved in the hyperosmotic response. Ca2+ concentration in the medium was critical for the stimulation of Cl− secretion to occur. Chloride cell volume shrinks in response to hypertonicity of the basolateral side in sea-water-adapted operculi; no effect was found on the apical side. Freshwater-adapted fish chloride cells show increased water permeability of the apical side. It is concluded that the rapid signal for adaptation to higher salinities is an increased tonicity of the plasma that induces chloride cell shrinkage, increased chloride secretion with activation of the Na+K+2Cl− cotransporter, the Na+/H+ exchanger and opening of Cl− channels.

    Notes: Summary Pedigrees of all known cases, on Shetland, of Down's syndrome, cytogenetically confirmed as trisomy 21, and of a control for each patient matched by birth date, sex and birth place, were traced over a minimum of eight generations. Mean kinship coefficients in all pairs of Down's syndrome patients and in all pairs of controls were similar. The kinship between the father and mother of each case shows that the parents are more closely related than the general level of relationship in the population, suggesting some recessive element in the etiology. It is argued that the effect of the resulting increased homozygosity would be to prevent the loss of the conceptus that occurs in the majority of trisomy 21 conceptions.

    Notes: Abstract A method that allows the rapid visualization of bacterial spatial colonization patterns on roots for the determination of general colonization trends was developed. This method, which analyzes images of roots, and bioluminescence-enhanced images of bacterial colonization patterns on these roots, was used to study the colonization patterns of seed-applied Enterobacter cloacae strain E6 on 3-day-old cucumber plants. Conventional dilution-plating methods indicated that E6 colonized cucumber tap roots in high populations and that these populations significantly decreased as the distance from the seed increased. In addition to confirming these observations, image analysis indicated that colonization by E6 significantly decreased on lateral roots as the distance increased horizontally away from the tap root, and that this bacterium did not evenly cover the most densely colonized regions of the cucumber root system. Results from these experiments indicate that the majority of E6 populations on cucumber roots after seed application are limited to the upper regions of the tap root and that E6 does not effectively colonize other regions of the root system.

    Notes: Abstract  Significant gaps exist in the knowledge of tropical leaf spectra and the manner in which spectra change as leaves age in their natural environment. Leaf aging effects may be particularly important in tropical vegetation growing on nutrient poor soils, such as Amazon caatinga, a white sand community common in the Amazon Basin. Spectral changes observed in six caatinga dominants include decreased reflectance and transmittance and increased absorptance for epiphyll-coated older leaves. Near-infrared (NIR) changes were most significant. More detailed spectral and physical changes were studied in one dominant, Aldina heterophylla. Over 16 months, Aldina study plants produced one or two leaf flushes. During leaf expansion, leaf water content and Specific Leaf Area decreased rapidly. Over the first 6 months spectral changes occurred across the spectrum, resulting in decreased transmittance and increased absorptance in the visible and NIR and decreased visible and increased NIR reflectance. In contrast, significant spectral changes were restricted to the NIR over the last 9 months, which showed a 10% absorptance increase associated primarily with increasing epiphylls and necrosis. At the canopy scale, increased NIR absorptance provides a mechanism for producing seasonally varying forest albedo and changing NIR to red ratios, independent of changes in other canopy attributes. In the Amazon caatinga studied, all canopy dominants were subject to epiphyllic growth providing a mechanism for distinguishing these forest types spectrally from more diverse terra-firme forest or forest types with more rapid leaf turnover, such as second growth. These changes are observable using remote sensing and could be used to map caatinga and monitor interannual or seasonal variability in phenology. If these results can be extended to other communities with long-lived foliage, they may offer a means for mapping vegetation on the basis of leaf longevity.

    Notes: Abstract A model is developed for the strength degradation of brittle surfaces in sliding contact with spherical indenters. The loss of strength is associated with the propagation of partial cone cracks in the wake of the indenter. Detailed fracture mechanics calculations are circumvented by working in the limit of ideal point-load contacts, with the key proposition that the crack dimensions remain insensitive to rotations of the cone axis relative to the specimen free surface. In this way the simple Roesler solution for classical, well-developed cone cracks may be retained as a convenient “reference state” for a more general theoretical description, whereby the superposition of a tangential friction force onto the normal loading is accommodated via a straightforward coordinate transformation operation. The major predictions of the model are tested by measuring the strengths of glass surfaces after contact with a sliding steel sphere. In particular, the degraded strengths are not strongly influenced by the coefficient of friction, contrary to expectations from some earlier indentation analyses.
