    Description: Large earthquakes produce crustal deformation that can be quantified by geodetic measurements, allowing for the determination of the slip distribution on the fault. We used data from Global Positioning System (GPS) networks in Central Chile to infer the static deformation and the kinematics of the 2010 moment magnitude (M(w)) 8.8 Maule megathrust earthquake. From elastic modeling, we found a total rupture length of ~500 kilometers where slip (up to 15 meters) concentrated on two main asperities situated on both sides of the epicenter. We found that rupture reached shallow depths, probably extending up to the trench. Resolvable afterslip occurred in regions of low coseismic slip. The low-frequency hypocenter is relocated 40 kilometers southwest of initial estimates.     Description: Energy flow in biological structures often requires submillisecond charge transport over long molecular distances. Kinetics modeling suggests that charge-transfer rates can be greatly enhanced by multistep electron tunneling in which redox-active amino acid side chains act as intermediate donors or acceptors. We report transient optical and infrared spectroscopic experiments that quantify the extent to which an intervening tryptophan residue can facilitate electron transfer between distant metal redox centers in a mutant Pseudomonas aeruginosa azurin.     Notes: Abstract  The wrist (carpus) and ankle (tarsus) of most tetrapods, as well as the wrist of anurans, contains relatively small nodular skeletal elements. The anuran tarsus, however, comprises a pair of long bones, the proximal tarsals tibiale and fibulare, which resemble the lower leg bones, tibia and fibula (zeugopodium). In this paper we investigate whether the proximal tarsals of Xenopus are of zeugopodial character identity, i.e. whether they develop under the influence of the same genes that pattern the lower limb. We compare Hoxa-11 expression in the forelimb bud with that in the hind limb bud by whole-mount in situ hybridization. Hoxa-11 has been implicated in the development of the lower limb. In Xenopus we note three differences between Hoxa-11 expression in fore- and hind limb buds: (1) Hoxa-11 expression is maintained until the hind limb bud reaches a larger size (2 mm) than that of the forelimb bud (1.5 mm); (2) Hoxa-11 expression is maintained over larger spatial domains than in the forelimb; and (3) Hoxa-11 expression has a pronounced posterior polarity in the hind limb, but not in the forelimb. Hind limb expression of Hoxa-11 can be understood as a heterochronic prolonging of the expression dynamic in the forelimb. Finally we found that the proximal tarsals start to develop within the expression domain of Hoxa-11, while in the forelimb the lower arm elements reach the distal expression limit of Hoxa-11. The gene expression data presented here support the notion of a zeugopodial identity of the proximal tarsal elements in Xenopus.

    Notes: Abstract A method for the simultaneous determination of organic additives in Zn(II) and Ni(II) electrolytic baths is proposed. Absorbance and first-derivative spectra were subjected to direct and inverse multiple linear regression (CLS and ILS, respectively) in order to choose the optimum alternative. The use of a factor design to prepare the samples enables the identification of interactions between analytes and their correction by ILS. The results provided by first-derivative spectra were slightly better than those obtained with absorbance spectra (prediction errors were always less than 2% with the former). The ILS procedure was applied to three industrial baths used to a different extent, with highly satisfactory results.

    Notes: Abstract In this communication, we present I–V and admittance spectroscopy measurements of shallow n+p junctions into p-InGaAs made by Si+ implantation, including a complete study of the conduction mechanisms as a function of temperature. The effect of P+ co-implantation is also analysed. The I–V characteristics of both junctions show that recombination in the space-charge zone is the dominant transport mechanism in forward bias, with ideality factors around 1.5 at 300 K that increase with decreasing temperature of measurement. Activation energies of the reverse saturation current are obtained at room temperature, being 0.5 eV and 0.4 eV for Si+ and Si+P+ implanted diodes, respectively, indicating that recombination currents occur through a near midgap center. Reverse current–voltage measurements show a higher conduction in the P+ co-implanted junction due to a higher concentration of traps. In both types of junctions, the reverse characteristics can be fitted to a thermally-activated trap-assisted tunneling mechanism at low bias, involving traps at 0.41 eV and 0.44 eV for Si+ and P+ co-implanted junctions, respectively, whereas different trap-assisted tunneling processes dominate at medium and high bias. The small signal analysis show a clear difference between the two types of junctions. The use of Kramers–Kronig transforms on the admittance spectroscopy data reveals the presence of a defect level at 0.35 eV in both types of junctions, probably assigned to Zn, the native acceptor present in the p-InGaAs. Another trap level at 0.30 eV is detected at the P+ co-implanted junctions, not appearing in the Si doped junctions, which could probably be due to damage produced by the co-implantation.

    Notes: Abstract A new procedure for the simultaneous spectrophotometric determination of Zn(II) and Ni(II) with 1-(2-pyridylazo)-2-naphthol as chromogenic reagent has been developed. It is based on resolution of the mixed spectrum over the wavelength range 530–590 nm by applying a least-squares fitting program to standard spectra from each component. The spectra are recorded at an apparent pH of 5.0, provided by an acetate buffer in a mixed 60∶40 v/v 2-ethoxyethanol/water medium. The relative standard deviations for determination of 13.7 μg of Ni and 31.0 μg of Zn were 1.9 and 1.0%, respectively (8 replications). The method has been applied to the analysis of iron surfaces coated with a Zn-Ni alloy. The results are compared with those obtained by atomic-absorption spectrophotometry.

    Notes: Abstract  Partial least-squares calibration was used for the simultaneous UV spectrophotometric determination of the active principle (ketoprofen) and preservative (parabens) in a pharmaceutical preparation commercially available in gel form. Calibration mixtures were prepared by mixing pure solutions of the analytes. The analytes were extracted and the UV spectrum of the resulting dispersion was recorded. Suppression of the effect of undissolved gel components was accomplished by prior centrifugation, using first and second-derivative spectra, introducing artificial baseline changes and adding the turbidity effect on the sample spectrum to some of the spectra in the calibration matrix. Both the second-derivative and the addition of the turbidity effect allow the quantification of non-centrifuged samples, the last one seems to be a little more effective. The results thus obtained are compared with those provided by HPLC following centrifugation of the samples.

    Notes: Abstract A near infrared diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS) procedure for the quantitative control analysis of the active compound (otilonium bromide) in a pharmaceutical preparation in three steps of the production process (blended product, cores and coated tablets) and a methodology for its validation are proposed. The analytical procedure is composed by two consecutive steps. First, the sample is identified by comparing its spectrum with a second derivative spectral library. If the sample is positively identified, the active compound is quantified by using a previously established partial least squares (PLS) calibration model. The procedure was validated by studying repeatability, intermediate precision, accuracy and linearity. To this end, an adaptation of ICH (International Conference on Harmonisation) validation methodology to an NIR multivariate calibration procedure is proposed. The relative standard error of prediction (RSEP) was ≤ 1% and the suitability of the procedure for control analysis was confirmed by the results obtained analysing new production samples produced over a three-month period.
