    Notizen: Abstract Detecting active sonar returns in multipath media is a central underwater signal processing problem. This paper studies a new approach to active sonar detection using bispectral analysis of sonar data. Its sensitivity to non-stationarities is used to develop a threshold detector that can be applied to broad classes of signals and noise. Precise statistical descriptions of the underwater medium and noise are not required. Theoretical analyses predicting its performance as a function of signal-to-noise ratio and time-bandwidth product are presented. Computer simulation experiments verify the results and show that its performance compares favorably to that of conventional detectors.

    Notizen: Abstract A simple and rapid method has been developed for the direct determination of organomercury in toluene extracts. The oxidative pretreatment, intended for cold vapour-atomic absorption/fluorescence spectrometry, involves the use of bromide/bromate reagent under strong acid conditions. The pretreatment is performed directly in a volumetric flask and avoids the need for back extraction and phase separation. Recoveries for methyl mercury additions to toluene, at the 2 μg/1 level, ranged from 100–106%.

    Notizen: Abstract A simple and robust field sampling technique has been developed for the determination of chromium (III) and chromium (VI) in rivers. Water samples, on collection, were immediately passed through microcolumns of activated alumina to isolate and retain the desired species. Microcolumns were then returned to the laboratory and inserted into a FI-ICP-ES system for elution/ quantitation. Field sampling performed at 2 stations in S. Yorkshire over a 1 month period yielded elevated concentrations of chromium (III) (8–20μg/1) and chromium (VI) (1.1–4.5 μg/1) and, for each data set, the sum of the two fractions matched the total chromium concentration.

    Notizen: Abstract MUSICOS (for MUlti-SIte COntinuous Spectroscopy) is an international project to facilitate and organize world-wide multi-site campaigns in high resolution spectroscopy, in view of obtaining a complete time coverage of various types of variable stellar phenomena. In the framework of this project a vast spectroscopic campaign was organized in December 1992, involving 8 sites well distributed in longitude around the Earth. The observations concerned three scientific programs, among which was the study of azimuthal structures in the wind and chromosphere of the pre-Main-Sequence Herbig Ae star AB Aur. The Hei 5876 Å line of AB Aur, which is formed in the expanding chromosphere of this star, in the innermost parts of its wind, was monitored at a resolution of 30000, nearly continuously for about 4 days. A spectacular variability of this line was discovered, the profile changing from pure emission to a composite profile including a deep absorption component in the course of a few hours. This variability can be the signature of azimuthal structures in the wind of AB Aur. We present the data collected during the campaign, and discuss possible interpretations of the spectacular variations of the Hei 5876 Å line.

    Notizen: Abstract The use of white-rot fungi for biodegradative research and developmental application requires seeding with a suitable inoculum. This paper presents a new method for the quantitative analysis of a mycelial inoculum composed of homogenized hyphal fragments. Our method is premised on a power-law behaviour between frequency and the size of these mycelial fragments. It is shown that the fragment distribution profile can be determined by regression to give the fractal fragmentation dimension, D. The influence of homogenizer speed was also investigated over a range from 8333 rpm to 25 000 rpm, which corresponds to a shear rate range of 13.9 × 103 to 41.7 × 103 s−1. The highest D value was shown at a shear rate of 27.8 × 103 s−1 for 30 s, implying greatest homogeneity in the size distribution function over the measured range (0–500 μm2). As shear force and duration increases (up to a threshold value) the production of small fragments is facilitated with a corresponding decrease in the D value. The slope relation express the fragment diversity whereas the reciprocal fractal valie characterizes the distribution size probability. Image-analysis methodology is described and the implications of a fractal description of a mycelial inoculum are also considered.

    Notizen: Abstract Infrared-visible sum-frequency generation (SFG) spectra of the stretching region of carbon monoxide adsorbed on Ni(100) are measured as a function of overlayer coverage and substrate temperature. The frequency and linewidth of the CO vibrational resonance in SFG have a similar dependence on coverage and temperature to that observed in linear absorption and emission spectroscopies. The lineshape of the SFG resonance, however, is influenced by the nonlinear response of the underlying metal surface. A simple model indicates that the nonresonant response of the substrate is out of phase with respect to that of the resonant CO response.
