    Notes: Summary The whitespotted swayer Monochamus scutellatus (Say) (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) breeds in recently killed conifers in northeastern North America, especially white pine Pinus strobus L. We cut down 4 white pines in Pocahontas County, West Virginia, in June 1981, in order to study the behavior of sawyers attracted to the trees. Far greater numbers of both male and female sawyers were attracted to the largest of the trees cut. At all trees, females preferred the parts of the tree of greater circumference. These preferences may be related to greater larval survival in large-circumference regions. Male and female numbers at breeding site peaked at about 1200–1500 h EST; at this time, males generally outnumbered females by about 2:1. We placed males in 3 size classes: L (〉2.0 cm), M (≦2.0 cm, ≧1.8 cm), and S (〈1.8 cm). At the largest of our 4 trees, L males disproportionately frequented the portion of the trunk preferred by females. L males were far more successful than M and S males in mating and in agonistic encounters with other males. L males were thus apparently able to exclude smaller males from the preferred region to some extent.

    Notes: Summary Scanning electron micrographs have shown a significant difference in surface sculpture of the epithelial cells of the secondary lamellae and those of the gill filaments. The filament epithelium is covered with many microridges which appear to be interrupted periodically by swellings of various sizes. The secondary lamellae have few microridges.

    Notes: Summary Resting oxygen consumption is generally related to the 0.75 power of the body mass. More recent studies on the morphometry of the lungs and gills of vertebrates indicate that the respiratory surfaces increase in area more closely to M1.0. A possible explanation is that the gas exchange surface is more to be related to themaximum oxygen uptake capacity, rather than to the resting condition. However, recent studies, especially in African mammals, suggest that $$\dot V_{O_2 max} $$ scales to a power similar to that for resting oxygen consumption and hence cannot be directly related to the respiratory surfaces. In fishes the situation seems to be different as $$\dot V_{O_2 max} $$ appears to increase more rapidly than standard $$\dot V_{O_2 } $$ . Consequently, the ratio between these two is greater in larger specimens and hence they have a greater scope for activity. A possible interpretation of this apparent difference may be related to differences in ventilation, as the tidal ventilation of lungs can lead to a reduction in the difference in oxygen pressure across the exchange surface, whereas in fish gills with increasing size and increasing water velocity there would be a reduction in the resistance to gas transfer. However, it is important to appreciate that such generalizations probably do not hold in all cases and the position of intermediate groups of vertebrates needs to be more closely assessed.

    Notes: Summary Measurements were made of the deformability of the red cells of carp at different temperatures and compared with previous results obtained with another teleost fish (yellowtail) and human red cells. Changes with temperature are similar to those obtained with yellowtail, but interpretation of differences in terms of mean corpuscular volume alone are insufficient to account for the variations, which seem to be mainly due to differences in cellular deformability of the cells themselves.

    Notes: Abstract Data are presented on growth and reproductive rates of Littorina rudis Maton from 3 contrasted habitats: a sheltered saltmarsh, a moderately sheltered boulder shore and an exposed cliff face. Growth was fastest in L. rudis from the moderately sheltered boulder shore, followed closely by snails from the sheltered saltmarsh. Growth was much slower and the asymptotic size much less in L. rudis from the exposed cliff face, this being attributed to the reduced time available for foraging caused by longer and more erratic periods when the substratum dries out. Eggs extracted from the brood chambers of the saltmarsh L. rudis took about 72 d to hatch in the laboratory at 10°C. No seasonal trend was detected in the percentage of sexually mature snails, which fluctuated erratically round about 54 to 99% in each population. Similarly, the ratio of females: males fluctuated erratically about 1.0. The number of eggs and embryos held in the brood chamber peaked in May–June and birth rates (release of young from the brood chamber) peaked in July-August. Following a lull in August, the brood chamber contents were maintained at moderately high levels throughout the winter, whereas the birth rates declined to very low levels. These differences in the seasonal cycle of brood chamber contents and birth rates were probably caused by seasonal differences in embryological development rate and in the propensity of the young to leave the brood chamber. Fecundity increased with parental size and, because of this, the smaller, slower growing exposed-shore L. rudis had much lower potential fecundities than L. rudis from the other shores. However, the size-specific fecundity of the exposedshore L. rudis was about 1.7 times that of L. rudis on the more sheltered shores. This difference was apparently not attributable to smaller young or to a greater capacity of the brood chamber in the exposedshore L. rudis, and must therefore have been caused by higher rates of egg production. 18% of mature females from the boulder shore and 5% of those from the cliff face were oviparous, having a jelly gland in place of the brood chamber.

    Notes: Abstract Dogielinotus loquax Barnard, a common intertidal macroinvertebrate on exposed ocean beaches near Grays Harbor, Washington, USA, is distributed from mid to mean high tidal levels, with a mean density of 1 830 m-2 in 1975–1976. Location of maximum density within the intertidal zone is related to surf intensity and varies seasonally. The species is iteroparous and has an average sex ratio of 1:1. Temperature constraints on growth and egg development rates apparently influence the timing of reproduction. Two dominant recruitments occur per year, one in early spring (the summer generation) and another in late summer (the overwintering generation). The sampling design and density estimates permitted estimation of the mortality rate for the summer generation. Shorebird predation is suspected to affect summer generation abundance.

    Notes: Summary Toad urinary bladders were exposed on either their mucosal or serosal surfaces, or on both surfaces, to medium in which sodium was replaced completely by lithium. With mucosal lithium Ringer's, serosal sodium Ringer's, short-circuit current (SCC) declined by about 50 percent over the first 60 min and was then maintained over a further 180 min. Cellular lithium content was comparable to the sodium transport pool. With lithium Ringer's serosa, SCC was abolished over 60 to 120 min whether the mucosal cation was sodium or lithium. Measurements of cellular ionic composition revealed that the epithelial cells gained lithium from both the mucosal and serosal media. With lithium Ringer's mucosa and serosa, cells lost potassium and gained lithium and a little chloride and water, but these changes in cellular ions could not account for the current flow across the tissue under these conditions, which must, therefore, have been carried by a transepithelial movement of lithium itself. The inhibition by serosal lithium of SCC was overcome by exposure of the mucosal surface of the bladders to amphotericin B. Thus it reflected, predominantly, an inhibition of lithium entry to the cells across the apical membrane. It is suggested that this inhibition is a consequence of cellular lithium accumulation.

    Notes: Abstract The chromosome complement of Gueriniella serratulae (F.) Fernald, Tribe Iceryini, Subfamily Monophlebinae of the primitive coccid Family Margarodidae, is 2 n ♀=6; males are unknown. Reproduction is by thelytokous parthenogenesis. Meiosis is normal; polar bodies do not contribute to the formation of a zygote-substitute nucleus; and development is initiated by a haploid cleavage of the female pronucleus. Diploidy is restored by the fusion of the 2 nuclei resulting from this division. With the exception of Gueriniella, all cytologically known Iceryini are haplo-diploids, with a chromosome complement of n=2. The hypothesis is proposed that Gueriniella is a persistent primitive stemming from the ancestral iceryine stock prior to the loss of the sex chromosomes and the evolution of haplo-diploidy within the tribe. A review of the available evidence from cytology, taxonomy, endosymbiosis, behavior and distribution shows good agreement with this interpretation.
