Notes: Abstract The arrival at the Yellowknife Array (YKA) of closely-spaced P-waves having slightly different values ofdT/dΔ, azimuth, and amplitude has been simulated using synthetic 1 Hz wavelets. Adaptive-processing determinations of apparent slowness and azimuth show a remarkable pattern of fluctuations with time for varying separations of the interfering pulses. In the critical separation range 0.30 to 0.55 s, these fluctuations greatly exceed the differences in arrival vectors of the primary wavelets themselves. Observation of characteristic interference patterns on real array seismograms might permit the identification of triplications associated with radial velocity anomalies in the lower mantle. Processed YKA seismograms for three events at distances close to 90° are presented, which, despite apparently simple P onsets illustrate the pattern of drift indT/dΔ expected for such a triplication.

Notes: Summary Articular cartilage of fetal calves, calves, and steers together with normal and osteoarthrotic human cartilage was analyzed for hyaluronate. The hyaluronate content increased with maturation in healthy tissue, particularly in regions of maximum contact, but was low in diseased cartilage.

Notes: Abstract U-Th-Pb systematics for zircon and monazite from Massabesic Gneiss (paragneiss and orthogneiss) and the granite near Milford, New Hampshire, were determined. Zircon morphology suggests that the paragneiss may be volcaniclastic (igneous) in origin, and thus the age data probably record the date (minimum of 646 m.y.) at which the rock was extruded. A two-stage lead-loss model is proposed to explain the present array of data points on a concordia diagram. Orthogneiss ages range only narrowly and are clustered around 475 m.y. Data for the granite of Milford, New Hampshire, are scattered, but may be interpreted in terms of inheritance and modern lead loss, yielding a crystallization age of 275 m.y. This is the only known occurrence of Avalonian-type basement in New Hampshire and as such provides evidence for the location of the paleo-Africa-paleo- North America suture. The geochronology also further documents the occurrence of disturbances during the Ordovician and Permian.

Notes: Summary Tomato seedlings were exposed to 3 days of chilling at 5 °C in both the presence and absence of 5 mM ethanolamine. An array of pathological responses could be seen at both the light and electron microscope levels: apparent loss of cell turgor, vacuolization, reduction in the apparent volume of both the cytoplasm and the vacuolar protein bodies, apparent deposition of new material in the cell walls, general disorganization of organelles, especially plastids, and a general loss of cytoplasmic structure. Chilling injury was less pronounced in ethanolamine-treated cotyledonary tissues which appeared to have normal turgor and cell shape at the light microscope level and better preserved organelles at the ultrastructural level. Protection by ethanolamine at the ultrastructural level was most pronounced for the cytoplasm, the mitochondria, and the cell walls. Dead cells were seen with both treatments but were 2–3 times as numerous in the chilled-only tissue.

Notes: Summary Piperidine may be rapidly converted into pyridine using palladium(II) Chloride or tetrachloropalladate(II) ion in aqueous medium at pH 10-11 and in the absence of oxygen. Cyclohexanone may be aromatized under the same conditions, although more slowly. The products fromo-cyclohexenylcyclohexanone are also described.

Notes: Synopsis Although collagen of either tendon or dermis can be stained equally well with Ponceau 2R/Acid Fuchsin or Light Green SF if the dyes are used independently, tendon collagen retains the red dye mixture and dermal collagen the green counterstain when the dyes are used sequentially in the Masson trichrome procedure. The results of experiments designed to assess differences in the penetration, retention and displacement of these arylmethane dyes have demonstrated that they are retained more firmly by the tensioned collagen of tendon or stretched dermis, and are more easily displaced from the collagen of relaxed tendon or dermis. Experiments designed to test the basis of these differences in dye retention indicate that more positively-charged amino dye-binding sites are available in the tensioned collagen than in relaxed collagen, where they appear to be closely associated with adjacent carboxyl groups on the collagen fibres. The possibility that the carboxyl groups of associated acid mucopolysaccharides are implicated in the differences in staining propensity has been investigated and discounted. It is suggested that whereas the binding of arylmethane dyes to collagen under tension is through strong ionic linkages to amino groups, the binding of these and other dyes to relaxed collagen is through weaker hydrogen bonds. It is proposed that these differences in charge distribution on the collagen of the two situations is related to the previously described piezo-electric effect demonstrable on stretched collagen.

Notes: Synopsis Although normally, dermal collagen fails to retain the Ponceau 2R/Acid Fuchsin component of the Masson trichrome procedure and is stained green by the counterstain, the collagen of sections of human dermis which have been heated above its denaturation temperature (T s) in moist conditions will retain the initial red stain. This difference in dye retention appears to be related to conformational changes of the collagen molecule which are associated with denaturation, for the change in staining is directly related to the shrinkage temperature, is reversed by rapid cooling after heating, is profoundly affected by differences in environmental conditions during heating which affect molecular rearrangement, and is age-dependent. Analogous changes in staining propensity have been observed in heated keratin and epidermis. However, whereas the retention of the initial red dye mixture is increased in denatured dermis, it is diminished in heated epidermis. It is suggested that the subtle dye substrate interaction of the Masson trichrome staining procedure can be utilized to demonstrate changes in molecular configuration which are associated with thermal, as well as other forms of denaturation of collagen and other proteins.

Notes: Summary Various methods are outlined for the analysis of mesoscale flow patterns and these are illustrated by application to the Adelaide (South Australia) urban area. They illustrate locally induced variations within the flow and also the seasonal transference of energy from synoptic sources in winter to the diurnal land-sea breeze system in the summer.
