Notes: Summary Equations to predict the percolation loss and water application efficiency in irrigation checks have been derived assuming the advance of the water front to be of the form l=a t b. Simple equations based on water distribution geometry in irrigation checks have been suggested for situations where the advance function is not known. The observed field data and the comparison with exact solution indicate that elliptic and parabolic geometry of intake profiles give a better prediction accuracy compared to the straight line intake profile previously used.

Notes: Abstract The exact solution of the time-integrated Pauli master equation of the exciton model for an arbitary initial configuration is derived. An application for the calculation of spectra in the neutron-induced reactions on46Ti is discussed. An interpretation of the solution is given in terms of the forward and backward transitions which lead to equilibration of the system.

Notes: Abstract A search has been carried out for neutral charm production in 5,108 proton-emulsion interactions at 400 GeV/c. Nine charm candidates have been observed in our fiducial volume which extends from 100 μm-1,000 μm in the forward cone. One of these is a 4-prong and the others are 2-prong events with opening angle〉10 mrad and momenta of both decay tracks〉150 MeV/c. Search for associated charm decays was made in an extended fiducial volume around the primary stars of these nine candidates. This yielded two neutral 2-prong events, one associated with the 4-prong and the other with a 2-prong candidate. All unassociated candidates are consistent with being backgrounds due toK s , Λ decays, neutral interactions and γ conversions whereas the background to associated events is negligible. Based on the two associated decays the inclusive cross section forD 0, −0 production is determined as 27±20 μb/nucleon. Detailed measurements on the 4-prong candidate lead to the identification of one decay track as an electron and another as a kaon. This is interpreted as a semi-leptonic, Cabbibo favouredD 0/D −0 decay.

Notes: Abstract A generalized two-components master-equation approach for a nuclear system towards equilibration is described, two-components being the proton and the neutron components. An approximate closed form solution of the two-component equation is discussed. Further an effective one-component master equation is derived from it. Explicit expressions for effective transition and emission rates are derived under a binomial model. The mean free path of an exciton has been found to be reduced in accounting for the two-component equilibration.

Notes: Abstract Transmission coefficients forn, p,2H,3H,3He and4He generated from global optical potentials available in the literature are parametrized in terms of simple empirical expressions which are smooth functions of the target mass number and projectile energy. These empirical forms predict the transmission coefficients and the magnitude of the scattering matrix satisfactorily for nuclei over the whole periodic table and energies up to 50 MeV. They are a convenient input in statistical model calculations where transmission coefficients are required.

Notes: Abstract A semi-empirical formula for the real volume integrals of the optical potentials for composite projectiles is proposed based on real volume integrals for the nucleonnucleus optical potential derived from the microscopic calculation of Jeukenne et al. which has been cast into a 5 parameter formula for energies upto 50 MeV by adding one additional term for the compositeness of the projectiles. The three parameters of this term have been obtained using the phenomenological analyses for light composite projectiles such as deuteron, triton, helium-3, alpha and lithium-6. The resultant formula describes successfully the physically meaningful volume integral per interacting nucleon-pair to an accuracy of 7% upto the projectile energies around 50 MeV per nucleon for targets over the whole periodic table.

Notes: Abstract The total (p, n) reaction cross section for50Ti has been measured from threshold upto about 4.9 MeV proton energy, with fine energy resolution. The excitation function averaged over about 100 keV energy interval exhibits “intermediate width structures”. Detailed statistical analysis of the data has revealed the presence of two kinds of structures having average widths which are characteristic of the compound nuclear and intermediate reaction mechanisms. The level spacings of these intermediate structures are consistent with Izumo's partial equilibrium model.

Notes: Abstract A one-parameter expression has been found which predicts with a smaller χ2 than previous expressions, the total reaction cross sections for a large number of heavy-ion systems covering a wide energy range. The expression uses an interaction radius which is a sum of the equivalent uniform matter radii of the interacting nuclei plus and energy-dependent term.

Notes: Abstract The absolute differential cross sections for the40Ca(α,α)40Ca reaction have been measured in the bombarding energy range from 4.33 to 5.68 MeV at the four laboratory angles 85°, 125°, 141° and 165°. An analysis of the data using multilevelR matrix theory has provided the spin-parities and widths of 29 levels in the compound nucleus44Ti. A comparison has been made with the levels deduced from the (α,γ) reaction and existing theoretical calculations of44Ti levels.

Notes: Abstract The toxic effects of manganese in combination with iron or copper on the brain tissue of mice were investigated. The combined administration of manganese and iron decreased the accumulation of manganese in the brain compared to manganese treatment alone. This indicated that excess iron may influence the absorption of manganese. Combined exposure to manganese and copper resulted in marked accumulation of copper in the brain. This is of great concern, since excess copper in brain produces incoordination in body movements. Thus, the combined exposure of these two metals, even in permissible limits, may produce serious brain dysfunctions. The combined administration of manganese with iron or copper has also significantly altered the levels of brain tryptophan and 5-hydroxytryptamine.
