Notizen: Abstract The paper contains the proof of the existence and uniqueness of the global extension of analytical local loop isomorphisms. The result is applied to the proof of the one-to-one correspondence between simply connected Moufang loops and Malcev algebras and to a global description of complete Moufang 3-webs.

Notizen: Abstract Since Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection, the idea of descent with modification came to dominate systematics, and so the study of morphology became subgugated to the reconstruction of phylogenies. Reinstating the organism in the theory of evolution (Ho & Saunders, 1979; Webster & Goodwin, 1982) leads to a project inrational taxonomy (Ho, 1986, 1988a), which attempts to classify biological forms on the basis of transformations on a given dynamical structure. Does rational taxonomy correspond to thenatural system that Linnaeus and his contemporaries as well as all pre-Darwinian morphologists had in mind? Here, we examine how rational taxonomy and the natural system can coincide in the dynamics of processes generating forms during development, which conferexclusivity, genericity androbustness to the forms that do exist. We use the example of segmentation, especially inDrosophila, as an illustration to explore the implications of rational taxonomy for evolution and systematics, and the relationship between ontogeny and phylogeny.

Notizen: Abstract Two series of alumina have been prepared by flash calcination (FCAL) and subsequent rehydration of “coarse” (〉 50 μm) and “fine” grain size gibbsite (〈 50 μm). The initial grain size of the gibbsite was found to determine the degree of amorphization, water content, rehydration ability, composition and pore structure of FCAL products. Active alumina materials having pore structure parameters similar to those of commercial alumina adsorbents and catalyst supports were obtained by FCAL and subsequent rehydration of fine grain size gibbsite.

Notizen: Abstract In the placental mammal major histocompatibility complex (MHC) three main families of class II genes, DR, DQ, and DP, have been recognized. Each family contains genes that code for one or more A- and B-chains. Recent evidence has indicated that a fourth family can be described, the DN/DO family. These four families arose sometime early in mammalian evolution. Our purpose was to deduce the MHC of an early mammalian ancestor of marsupials and eutherians. Using primers designed to conserved regions in exon 2 and exon 3 of the DQA gene we amplified an 830-bp band from the total genomic DNA of the marsupial, Macropus eugenii (tammar wallaby). However, sequence analysis of cloned genomic products showed that the primers had amplified three genes, two of which appeared to be alleles at one locus, while the other gene belonged to a closely related locus. Phylogenetic analysis showed that both these loci were most closely related to the human (HLA-DNA) and mouse (H-20a) DNA genes, with a bootstrap support of 78%. Expression of oney one locus could be detected by RT-PCR from spleen RNA. In situ hybridization to tammar wallaby chromosomes mapped these genes to one region on the long arm of chromosome 1, indicating the position of the MHC in marsupials. Related A-chain genes were detected in monotremes, and human by southern blotting, and very faint bands were observed in the chicken. Hybridization with a tammar DNA-like gene on several marsupial species showed evidence of at least three DNA-like loci in the tammar wallaby, at least one in the koala, but none in the kowari. This indicates that the organization of the class II MHC may be more dynamic in marsupial than in placental mammals, but, in contrast to a previous study on the MHC of a marsupial, we cannot conclude that the class II gene families of placental and marsupial mammals evolved from different ancestral genes.

Notizen: Abstract The McMurdo Dry Valleys presently contain more than 20 permanent lakes and ponds, which vary markedly in character. All, with the exception of a hypersaline pond, have a perennial ice-cover. The dry valley lakes, and lakes in other ice-free regions of continental Antarctica, are unique on this planet in that they consistently maintain a thick year-round ice cover (2.8–6.0 m) over liquid water. The persistent ice covers minimize wind-generated currents and reduce light penetration, as well as restricting sediment deposition into a lake and the exchange of atmospheric gases between the water column and the atmosphere. From a paleolimnological perspective, the dry valley lakes offer an important record of catchment and environmental changes. These lakes are also modern-day equivalents of periglacial lakes that were common during glacial periods at temperature latitudes. The present lakes are mostly remnants of larger glacial lakes that occupied the valleys in the past, perhaps up to 4.6 Ma ago. Two of the valleys contain evidence of being filled with large glacial lakes within the last 10000 years. Repeated drying and filling events since then have left a characteristic impression on the salt profiles of some lakes creating a unique paleo-indicator within the water column. These events are also marked in the sediments by the concentration and dilution of certain chemical constituents, particularly salts, and are also corroborated by carbonate speciation and oxygen isotope analysis. Stratigraphic analysis of dry valley lake sediments is made difficult by the occurrence of an ‘old carbon’ reservoir creating spurious radiocarbon dates, and by the high degree of spatial variability in lake sedimentation. From a biological perspective, the lakes are relatively simple, containing various taxa of planktonic and benthic microorganisms, but no higher forms of life, which is an advantage to paleolimnologists because there is no bioturbation in the sediments. Useful biological paleo-indicators found in the sediments include cyanobacterial filament sheaths, diatom frustules and other eukaryotic algal cells, protozoan cysts, photosynthetic pigments, and minerals (e.g. carbonates) associated with microbial activity. Future work will benefit from fully characterizing the connection between the ice covers, environmental conditions, and paleo-indicators, thereby allowing refinement of inferences made concerning the paleoenvironment. New dating techniques need to be tested in this environment to overcome the problems associated with radiocarbon dating. The establishment of a detailed and focused paleolimnological campaign is proposed.

Notizen: Abstract This paper investigates the interaction effect of advertising and price on the market share of a consumer nondurable product. We postulate a model in which local advertising is thought to primarily affect the consumers' purchase by making the demand more price sensitive, and national advertising to affect the consumers' preference, thus making the demand less price sensitive. Moreover, we hypothesize that local advertising interaction will have more immediate effect, while national advertising interaction will have longer term interaction effects. We apply these ideas empirically, and find support for our hypotheses. Thus, the interaction effect of advertising and price can be characterized by both increased and decreased price sensitivity, depending on the type of advertising. Moreover, these effects may be present simultaneously for the same product.

Notizen: Abstract Nine known or potential components of the aggregation-attachment pheromone of the ticksAmblyomma hebraeum andA. variegatum were tested as long-range attractants. In field assays, laboratory-reared unfed male and female ticks were released 4 m downwind of treated filter-paper targets. Carbon dioxide was used to activate the ticks and the numbers attracted to the targets were recorded. Adults ofA. hebraeum were attracted to six compounds (benzaldehyde, 2,6-dichlorophenol, heptadecane, methyl salicylate, nonanoic acid and o-nitrophenol) and adults ofA. variegatum to four compounds (2,6-dichlorophenol, methyl salicylate, nonanoic acid and o-nitrophenol). The most important attractant forA. hebraeum was o-nitrophenol; methyl salicylate and o-nitrophenol were the most important attractants forA. variegatum. Nonanoic acid and o-nitrophenol attracted significantly more female than maleA. hebraeum. Both species were also attracted by a mixture of the nine compounds.

Notizen: Abstract Nine known or potential components of the aggregation-attachment pheromone of the ticksAmblyomma hebraeum andA. variegatum were tested as attachment stimulants. Unfed adult male and female ticks were confined in linen bags on the ears of rabbits that had been treated with solutions of the test compounds; the numbers attached were recorded after 24 h. In both species, males attached more rapidly and more readily than females. InA. hebraeum, attachment of males was induced by eight compounds (benzaldehyde, benzyl alcohol, 2,6-dichlorophenol, heptadecane, 2-methyl propanoic acid, methyl salicylate, o-nitrophenol and salicylaldehyde) and attachment of females by six compounds (benzaldehyde, benzyl alcohol, 2,6-dichlorophenol, 2-methyl propanoic acid, o-nitrophenol and salicylaldehyde). InA. variegatum, attachment of males was induced by seven compounds (benzaldehyde, benzyl alcohol, 2,6-dichlorophenol, heptadecane, methyl salicylate, o-nitrophenol and salicyladeehyde) and attachment of females by two compounds (methyl salicylate and o-nitrophenol). A mixture of the nine compounds and extracts of prefed males ofA. herbraeum andA. variegatum induced attachment in males of both species and in femaleA. hebraeum; in these tests, attachment of femaleA. variegatum was only induced by extracts of conspecific males.
