Notizen: A plot of relative parallax measurements in a student exercise is proposed for revealing errors in parallax bar readings taken from a stereo-pair of aerial photographs.

Notizen: Protozoa are now being recognized as important members of planktonic food webs. This is due to the inclusion of microbial links in our paradigm of trophic relationships. Heterotrophic microflagellates and ciliates are major grazers of bacteria. They can stimulate production through nutrient recycling and can transform microbial production into larger particles, which are then available for macroconsumers. In this paper we add new groups, the small (〈 20 μm) ciliates and myxotrophic flagellates, to the planktonic food web.

Notizen: Stomatogenesis in Paramecium aurelia is shown to involve the lower kineties of the right vestibular wall, the endoral membrane and perhaps the quadrulus. The anarchic field for the new buccal organelles is formed by granules produced from somatic kinetosomes of the right vestibular wall. The endoral membrane becomes incorporated into the buccal anlage and probably regulates orientation and development of the new organelles. A production of heretofore unobserved buccal kinetosomes from the quadrulus is described and it is suggested that these may form the new endoral membrane for the proter.During conjugation the infraciliature dedifferentiates in the area of fusion between the conjugants. The buccal organelles dedifferentiate at the time of pronucleus formation and transfer. It is suggested that dedifferentiation of structures in the fusion area is caused by a partial solation of the cortex in this area. The dedifferentiation of the buccal organelles results from the solation of the cytoplasm and the cortex of the paroral cone during pronucleus migration. The redifferentiation of the buccal organelles and somatic kinetosomes is suggested to be a recrystallization or gelation of the cortex with the structures re-forming in their normal positions and not from an anarchic field as at fission.

Notizen: After an introduction setting out the general state of work on the national accounts in the Middle East the author considers the principal uses of national accounts statistics in less developed countries. The first group of uses discussed is in connexion with the measurement of growth and the making of international comparisons. The author is of the opinion that in many cases the primary statistical series are so weak that the fact they they are combined together into a series called national income or gross domestic product lends to them a significance which they do not really possess. The real problem is to improve the quality of the primary series.A second use of national accounts statistics is in connexion with fiscal and budgetary policy. In the statistically advanced countries this is one of the most important uses but in the less developed countries budgetary policy has not yet reached a level of sophistication which would call for the use of national accounts data. Moreover, the time factor involved in assembling accurate national accounts estimates militates against their effective use for short term forecasting. The author considers that the most important use for national accounts statistics is to provide a framework for development planning. The United Nations system is not altogether appropriate for this purpose. It grew up primarily as a system for recording income flows but in development planning one is concerned equally with commodity flows with a great deal of attention being focussed upon intermediate products. The proposals of the working group of African Statisticians for an adaptation of the S.N.A. to African countries represents a most important advance in this respect. In the final section of the paper the author advocates a broader definition of capital formation to include developmental expenditure which is not properly defined as fixed capital formation. Education expenditure is cited as an example. It is suggested that in the national accounts it would be desirable to operate with gross concepts. However, the growth of the capital stock is obviously important in less developed countries and it is suggested that statistical techniques be devised to measure it directly wherever possible. Finally, attention is drawn to the ambiguities and weaknesses in the concept of residence as used at present in the S.N.A.

Notizen: This study of 158 organizations sought to depict current uses of computers in R&D. A survey of senior R&D management by the Industrial Research Institute identifies a number of salient features. Routine computer use is becoming a characteristic of scientists, engineers, and managers. Yet characteristics of usage differ markedly by size of R&D unit and by line of business. Moreover, patterns of responses suggest on-going changes toward the time when R&D will be strongly coloured by the context of an integrated, intelligent computer environment. This implies new roles and skill requirements for R&D managers, professionals, and support staff.

Notizen: Proper design, construction, testing and maintenance of Class 1 (hazardous waste) injection wells can guarantee that all waste is delivered to the injection zone. To assess the effects of waste injection, analytical models were developed which predict waste movement and pressure increases within the injection zone, and describe upward permeation through confining layers.A basic plume model was used to track waste from several injection wells with varied injection history at DuPont's Victoria Texas site. To determine the maxi-mum distance that any portion of the waste might travel, special purpose models were employed to account for (1) density differences between the waste and the native formation brine, and (2) layered permeability variation within the injection zone. The results were generalized to a “multiplying factor concept,” which facilitates development of a worst-case scenario.A pressure distribution model based on the Theis (1935) equation for radial flow was applied to the Victoria site, with modifications to account for multiple wells, injection history and geological complexities.Permeation into an intact confining layer was investigated by a new technique based on the Hantush and Jacob (1955) “leaky aquifer” theory. The model defines the maximum permeation distance, taking into account post-injection pressure decay.Defects within confining layers, such as faults, fractures and abandoned wells, have been considered. Studies to evaluate their detailed characteristics are continuing. Initial results indicate that faults and fractures are not likely to provide conductive pathways in Gulf Coast settings, and site-specific evaluations are required to assess the impact of abandoned wells.

Notizen: SUMMARY— Nucleotides in rested king crab muscle were identified as NAD, AMP, GMP, IMP, ADP, UDPAG, UDPG, ATP, GTP and UTP. Of three additional minor nucleotide fractions, two are tentatively thought to contain NAD; the third remains unidentified. The nucleotide profiles of three different leg sections were very similar, with ATP the predominant nucleotide. Average total nucleotide content of these three sections was 3.47 μM/g. Muscle from severely exhausted crabs held frozen overnight contained 0.35 μM/g of IMP. Since king crabs are processed fresh and IMP does not accumulate to a very high level, IMP probably does not play an important role in king crab flavor.
