Description: Sub bottom profiler (SBP) aka sediment echosounder data. Sediment echosounder measurements were conducted continuously by means of Teledyne PARASOUND DS3 (P70) parametric sediment echosounder during both R/V MARIA S. MERIAN cruises, MSM20-2 (Jegen et al., 2015) and MSM24, until the shutdown of the system due to technical reasons on cruise MSM24. The system's beam width is 4.5° along-track and 5.0° across-track. The primary high frequency signal (PHF) with a frequency of about 18 kHz was recorded for water-column investigations while the secondary low frequency signal (SLF) with a frequency of 4 kHz is used to image the shallow sub-seafloor. This selection of four PARASOUND profiles were converted into SEG-Y data by using the PS32segy tool (Hanno Keil, University of Bremen, Germany). Afterwards, the ReflexW software57 (Sandmeier, 2012) was used to low-pass filter the data and to mute the water column.

Description: Tristan da Cunha is assumed to be the youngest subaerial expression of the Walvis Ridge hot spot. Based on new hydroacoustic data, we propose that the most recent hot spot volcanic activity occurs west of the island. We surveyed relatively young intraplate volcanic fields and scattered, probably monogenetic, submarine volcanoes with multibeam echosounders and sub-bottom profilers. Structural and zonal GIS analysis of bathymetric and backscatter results, based on habitat mapping algorithms to discriminate seafloor features, revealed numerous previously-unknown volcanic structures. South of Tristan da Cunha, we discovered two large seamounts. One of them, Isolde Seamount, is most likely the source of a 2004 submarine eruption known from a pumice stranding event and seismological analysis. An oceanic core complex, identified at the intersection of the Tristan da Cunha Transform and Fracture Zone System with the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, might indicate reduced magma supply and, therefore, weak plume-ridge interaction at present times.

Description: Integrated interpretation of multi-beam bathymetric, sediment-penetrating acoustic (PARASOUND) and seismic data show a multiple slope failure on the northern European continental margin, north of Spitsbergen. The first slide event occurred during MIS 3 around 30 cal. ka BP and was characterised by highly dynamic and rapid evacuation of ca. 1250 km**3 of sediment from the lower to the upper part of the continental slope. During this event, headwalls up to 1600 m high were created and ca. 1150 km**3 material from hemi-pelagic sediments and from the lower pre-existing trough mouth fan has been entrained and transported into the semi-enclosed Sophia Basin. This megaslide event was followed by a secondary evacuation of material to the Nansen Basin by funnelling of the debris through the channel between Polarstern Seamount and the adjacent continental slope. The main slide debris is overlain by a set of fining-upward sequences as evidence for the associated suspension cloud and following minor failure events. Subsequent adjustment of the eastern headwalls led to failure of rather soft sediments and creation of smaller debris flows that followed the main slide surficial topography. Discharge of the Hinlopen ice stream during the Last Glacial Maximum and the following deglaciation draped the central headwalls and created a fan deposit of glacigenic debris flows.

Description: Reported here are physical property records and sedimentological parameters generated from core and downhole logging measurements at ODP Site 909 (Fram Strait). The data are listed vs. depth and a newly derived age model. The composite P-wave velocity (Vp) profile of the uppermost 26 m consists of edited and spliced velocity measurements with the P-wave logger on sediment cores from Holes 909A and 909B. For the interval between 102 and 1000 mbsf in-situ velocity information from downhole logs (Sonic Digital Tool, processed postcruise data) at Hole 909C were used. Wet bulk density (WBD) data stem from nondestructive density measurements of whole-round core sections with a gamma-ray attenuation porosity evaluator (0 - 89 m), and from densities calculated from phasor induction resistivity downhole logging measurements (89 - 1016 m). Based on a new chronology, total mass accumulation rates (MAR) and accumulation rates for various grain size classes of the coarse fraction (〉63 µm) were recalculated. Original weight percentage data are from O'Connell et al. (1996) and from Wolf-Welling et al. (1996). Percentage silt data estimated from smear slides were used to calculate accumulation rates of silt. Estimated silt percentages as well as all original physical property measurements are from Myhre et al. (1995).
