Notes: 13C/12C ratios of the carboxyl and methyl carbons of acetic acid were determined by two published methods, using the thermal decomposition of sodium acetate and calcium acetate respectively. Comparison of the results obtained on a variety of samples revealed a systematic disagreement of 4.0% between the two methods. The source of this discrepancy is shown to be a fractionation associated with the calcium acetate method.

Notes: The sequential copolymerization of 1,3,6-trioxacyclooctane (TOC) and 1,3-dioxolane (DOL) (B) with various vinyl monomers (A) was investigated. Under appropriate conditions amphiphilic block copolymers of the type AB and ABA were formed. The reaction mixtures and the isolated polymers were analyzed by GPC (double detection - IR and UV at 254 nm), IR, 1H-, and 13C-NMR spectroscopy. Block copolymers with chosen molecular weights and low polydispersity could be obtained only by sequential copolymerization of p-methoxystyrene on “living” TOC. In the polymerization of DOL with α-methylstyrene and i-butyl vinyl ether (IBVE) transfer reactions take place to a larger degree.

Description / Table of Contents: Possibilities and Consequences of Lightweight Design - Examples of the Operating Strength of Frontaxles-, Steering Systems- and Drive ComponentsThe aim of extensive weight reductions in car construction leads on the one hand to the increasingly exploiting use of traditional materials, and on the other to the use of lighter materials. This trend can be detected in body and trim features, but also in running gear, steering systems and drive components. When choosing alternative materials it should be borne in mind that alongside the often many-sided aspects of function and reliability, economy frequently has a decisive influence. In this paper the dynamic and static test rig results from parts made of different materials are described and compared: control arm, steering shaft, conrod and prop shaft.

Notes: Examination, by optical microscopy, of the matrix/analyte morphology of a sample propared from a droplet in matrix-assisted UV laser-desorption mass spectrometry (MUVLDMS) reveals that the matrix crystallizes to a large extent, thus altering the concentration of the material in regions on the surface from that of the bulk applied solution. Microscopy reveals that vanillic acid and to a lesser extent nicotinic acid matrices form prominent crystalline rings around the dried sample spot while sinapic acid forms a more uniform dispersion of the crystallized matrix. Insulin analyte investigated in this report tendss to form a thin isotropic phase in the center of the drops. The first reported use of a KrF excimer laser (249 nm) in MUVLDMS is also discussed.

Notes: From the crude product of the synthesis of the dithiadiphosphetane [RP(S)S]2 (with R = 2,4,6-iPr3C6H2), the trans-oxathiadiphosphetane has been isolated, C30H40OP2S3. X-ray structure analysis and mass spectroscopic investigations give unequivocal evidence for this structure: monoclinic, C2/c (no. 15), a = 13.066(8), b = 21.726(8), c = 12.070(6) Å, β = 103.54(10)°, V = 3331 Å3, Z = 4, and Dc = 1.158 g/cm3. The asymmetric unit consists of half the formula unit. Solid-state 31P NMR spectra give information about the chemical shift anisotropy. Results of IGLO calculations of the 31P nuclear magnetic shielding tensor agree satisfactorily with the experimental data. Monitoring the reaction of several dithiadiphosphetanes with benzophenone in solution by 31P NMR spectroscopy indicates that additional oxathiadiphosphetanes as well as thiotrimetaphosphonates are present. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Advancing melt front profiles, pressures, and temperatures were measured during the filling stage of an injection molding process into a rectangular cavity with variously shaped inserts. These experimentally measured data, together with weldline location, were compared to predictions of the previously developed theoretical model.

Notes: The empirical equation, 1/ti = AeEi/RT, which expresses the exponential dependence of the reciprocal of crystallization induction time, ti, has been analyzed and shown to be equivalent to the nucleation rate equations derived earlier in Part III (1). Consequently we have used the ti measurements obtained earlier by Krueger and Yeh to calculate not only the nucleation rate enhancements but also the melting point elevations, the relative crystal thickness changes and molecular coil extension ratios of shear-crystallization polyethylene. It is shown that polyethylene when crystallized between 129 and 131°C at shear rates between 1.56 and 9.70 sec-1 can have melting point increases of 4.2 to 7.2°C and crystal thickness decreases of 20 to 25 percent, when compared to those crystallized at 130°C in the quiescent state. The predicted “coil” extension in the melt just prior to shear-induced crystallization ranges between 21 and 36 percent. The results of these analyses as well as those on nucleation rates of polyethylene oxide are discussed in detail.
