    Description: Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) Radio Occultation (RO) is a highly valuable remote sensing technique for probing the Earth’s atmosphere, due to its global coverage, high accuracy, long-term stability, and essentially all-weather capability. In order to ensure the highest quality of essential climate variables (ECVs), derived from GNSS signal tracking by RO satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO), the orbit positions and velocities of the GNSS transmitter and LEO receiver satellites need to be determined with high and proven accuracy and reliability. Wegener Center’s new Reference Occultation Processing System (rOPS) hence aims to integrate uncertainty estimation at all stages of the processing. Here we present a novel setup for precise orbit determination (POD) within the rOPS, which routinely and in parallel performs the LEO POD with the two independent software packages Bernese GNSS software (v5.2) and NAPEOS (v3.3.1), employing two different GNSS orbit data products. This POD setup enables mutual consistency checks of the calculated orbit solutions and is used for position and velocity uncertainty estimation, including estimated systematic and random uncertainties. For LEOs enabling laser tracking we involve position uncertainty estimates from satellite laser ranging. Furthermore, we intercompare the LEO orbit solutions with solutions from other leading orbit processing centers for cross-validation. We carefully analyze multi-month, multi-satellite POD result statistics and find a strong overall consistency of estimates within LEO orbit uncertainty target specifications of 5 cm in position and 0.05 mm/s in velocity for the CHAMP, GRACE-A, and Metop-A/B missions. In 92% of the days investigated over two representative 3-month periods (July to September in 2008 and 2013) these POD uncertainty targets, which enable highly accurate climate-quality RO processing, are satisfied. The moderately higher uncertainty estimates found for the remaining 8% of days (∼5–15 cm) result in increased uncertainties of RO-retrieved ECVs. This allows identification of RO profiles of somewhat reduced quality, a potential benefit for adequate further use in climate monitoring and research.

    Description: In the framework of the European Gravity Service for Improved Emergency Management (EGSIEM) project, consistent sets of state-of-the-art reprocessed Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) orbits and satellite clock corrections have been generated. The reprocessing campaign includes data starting in 1994 and follows the Center for Orbit Determination in Europe (CODE) processing strategy, in particular exploiting the extended version of the empirical CODE Orbit Model (ECOM). Satellite orbits are provided for Global Positioning System (GPS) satellites since 1994 and for Globalnaya Navigatsionnaya Sputnikovaya Sistema (GLONASS) since 2002. In addition, a consistent set of GPS satellite clock corrections with 30 s sampling has been generated from 2000 and with 5 s sampling from 2003 onwards. For the first time in a reprocessing scheme, GLONASS satellite clock corrections with 30 s sampling from 2008 and 5 s from 2010 onwards were also generated. The benefit with respect to earlier reprocessing series is demonstrated in terms of polar motion coordinates. GNSS satellite clock corrections are validated in terms of completeness, Allan deviation, and precise point positioning (PPP) using terrestrial stations. In addition, the products herein were validated with Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) precise orbit determination (POD) and Satellite Laser Ranging (SLR). The dataset is publicly available.

    Description: Sentinel-3A/3B (S3A/B) satellites are equipped with a number of precise instruments dedicated to the measurement of surface topography, sea and land surface temperatures and ocean and land surface color. The high-precision orbit is guaranteed by three instruments: Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver, laser retroreflector dedicated to Satellite Laser Ranging (SLR) and Doppler Orbitography and Radiopositioning Integrated by Satellite (DORIS) antenna. In this article, we check the possibility of using SLR observations and GPS-based reduced-dynamic orbits of active S3A/B satellites for the determination of global geodetic parameters, such as geocenter motion, Earth rotation parameters (ERPs) and the realization of the terrestrial reference frame, based on data from 2016-2018. The calculation process was preceded with the estimation of SLR site range biases, different network constraining tests and a different number of orbital arcs in the analyzed solutions. The repeatability of SLR station coordinates based solely on SLR observations to S3A/B is at the level of 8-16 mm by means of interquartile ranges even without network constraining in 7-day solutions. The combined S3A/B and LAGEOS solutions show a consistency of estimated station coordinates better than 13 mm, geocenter coordinates with a RMS of 6 mm, pole coordinates with a RMS of 0.19 mas and Length-of-day with a RMS of 0.07 ms/day when referred to the IERS-14-C04 series. The altimetry observations have to be corrected by the geocenter motion to obtain unbiased estimates of the mean sea level rise. The geocenter motion is typically derived from SLR measurements to passive LAGEOS cannonball-like satellites. We found, however, that SLR observations to active Sentinel satellites are well suited for the determination of global geodetic parameters, such as Earth rotation parameters and geocenter motion, which even further increases the potential applications of Sentinel missions for deriving geophysical parameters.

    Description: Satellite gravimetry allows for determining large scale mass transport in the system Earth and to quantify ice mass change in polar regions. We provide, evaluate and compare a long time-series of monthly gravity field solutions derived either by satellite laser ranging (SLR) to geodetic satellites, by GPS and K-band observations of the GRACE mission, or by GPS observations of the three Swarm satellites. While GRACE provides gravity signal at the highest spatial resolution, SLR sheds light on mass transport in polar regions at larger scales also in the pre- and post-GRACE era. To bridge the gap between GRACE and GRACE Follow-On, we also derive monthly gravity fields using Swarm data and perform a combination with SLR. To correctly take all correlations into account, this combination is performed on the normal equation level. Validating the Swarm/SLR combination against GRACE during the overlapping period January 2015 to June 2016, the best fit is achieved when down-weighting Swarm compared to the weights determined by variance component estimation. While between 2014 and 2017 SLR alone slightly overestimates mass loss in Greenland compared to GRACE, the combined gravity fields match significantly better in the overlapping time period and the RMS of the differences is reduced by almost 100 Gt. After 2017, both SLR and Swarm indicate moderate mass gain in Greenland.

    Description: The aminoglycoside gentamicin is used for the empirical treatment of pediatric infections. It has a narrow therapeutic window. In this prospective study at University Children’s Hospital Zurich, Switzerland, we aimed to characterize the pharmacokinetics of gentamicin in pediatric patients and predict plasma concentrations at typical recommended doses. We recruited 109 patients aged from 1 day to 14 years, receiving gentamicin (7.5 mg/kg at age ≥ 7 d or 5 mg/kg). Plasma levels were determined 30 min, 4 h and 24 h after the infusion was stopped and then transferred, together with patient data, to the secure BioMedIT node Leonhard Med. Population pharmacokinetic modeling was performed with the open-source R package saemix on the SwissPKcdw platform in Leonhard Med. Data followed a two-compartment model. Bodyweight, plasma creatinine and urea were identified as covariates for clearance, with bodyweight as a covariate for central and peripheral volumes of distribution. Simulations with 7.5 mg/kg revealed a 95% CI of 13.0–21.2 mg/L plasma concentration at 30 min after the stopping of a 30-min infusion. At 24 h, 95% of simulated plasma levels were
