    Notes: In the paper the author presents a novel point of view for the refinement and derefinement algorithms of triangular nested meshes using fractal concepts and iterated function systems (IFS). The fractal behaviour can be understood in the sense that these meshes feature a remarkable amplifying invariance under changes of magnification. Here we compare the meshes obtained by the combination of these algorithms with those presented by Bova and Carey (1992). Although both of the meshes are very similar, the current algorithms automatically build and manage sequences of nested irregular discretizations of the domain. The author illustrates here how the application of IFS families is equivalent to the use of an adaptive strategy that combines the refinement procedure with the derefinement one.

    Notes: Several pyrrolidinofullerenes were N-arylated by phase-transfer catalysis in the absence of solvent. The electrochemical behaviour of the novel C60-acceptor dyads was studied by cyclic voltammetry which showed that the nitro groups on the N-phenyl ring have a strong influence on the reduction potential values. Theoretical calculations at the semiempirical PM3 level fully support the experimental redox potential values.

    Notes: An X-ray study has been made of the synthetic polypeptide poly-L-ornithine hydrobromide to investigate whether, like the chemically related polypeptides poly-L-lysine and poly-L-arginine hydrochlorides, it can undergo conformational changes merely from variations in its degree of hydration. X-ray powder and fiber photographs of specimens with from half up to about three molecules of water per ornithine residue show features that suggest a “cross-β-pleated-sheet” structure. Each pleated sheet is formed from parallel chains and the sheets are piled up along the b axis. The spacings, which do not vary appreciably with hydration, can be satisfactorily indexed in terms of an orthogonal unit cell with a = 4.60 Å, b = 30.2 Å, and c = 6.64 Å. These dimensions are shown by models to be compatible with the proposed structure. Removal of the last half molecule of water results in a very diffuse pattern but on rehydration the sharp pattern reappears. Specimens containing four to nine molecules of water per residue show a quite different pattern. Reflections other than equatorial are absent in oriented diagrams except for a 5.4 Å diffuse streak across the meridian which is suggestive of an α-helical structure. Increasing the relative humidity from 86% to about 100% causes the a axis of the hexagonal unit cell to increase from 14.7 Å to 15.3 Å. On drying, the β structure reappears once again. These conformational changes are very similar to those observed in poly-L-lysine hydrochloride except that the latter shows a more stable α-helical form. This difference may be explained in terms of stabilizing hydrophobic interactions between side chains, since ornithine has a shorter side chain than lysine.

    Notes: New examples of the fluxional behavior of (η3-allyl)palla-dium complexes are described. Variable-temperature experiments and line-shape analysis of two (η3-allyl)palladium complexes containing 2-(1H-pyrazol-1-yl)azine ligands were performed in order to determine the activation free energies, enthalpies and entropies of the process. A dissociative mechanism pointing to a selective Pd-N cleavage is proposed on the basis of these results and NOE experiments above and below the coalescence temperature.

    Description: The latest trend of low record bid prices in renewable energy auctions has raised concerns on the effective deployment of the winning projects. A survey of recent auction data from several countries, technologies and remuneration designs is analysed and compared with the corresponding levelised costs of energy (LCOEs) to draw first insights on their viability. A critical assessment of the ability of the LCOE for determining the adequate bid level is then performed and the preliminary unviable results of selected mature technologies are further investigated using improved profitability metrics as the project and equity net present value (NPV) and internal rate of return (IRR). As representative examples, the analysed Danish 2019 onshore wind and photovoltaics (PV) auctions require very specific scenarios to become viable, which cast doubts on their effective implementation. Under the assumptions of a realistic base case, the sensitivity analysis revealed that either 59% of decrease in the weighted average cost of capital (WACC), or 37% of discount on the investment cost or a 3.6% annual increment in the mean market price is needed for achieving the NPV break-even in the onshore wind case. Likewise, the PV case is unprofitable whatever the WACC may be, and either a 60% discount on the investment cost or a 6.8% annual increment in the mean market price is needed for the NPV to break-even. Although some projects could be relying on indirect revenues or additional sources of incomes beyond the auction support, it remains to see if they are finally materialised.

    Description: Currently, many applications have emerged from the implementation of software development and hardware use, known as the Internet of things. One of the most important application areas of this type of technology is in health care. Various applications arise daily in order to improve the quality of life and to promote an improvement in the treatments of patients at home that suffer from different pathologies. That is why there has emerged a line of work of great interest, focused on the study and analysis of daily life activities, on the use of different data analysis techniques to identify and to help manage this type of patient. This article shows the result of the systematic review of the literature on the use of the Clustering method, which is one of the most used techniques in the analysis of unsupervised data applied to activities of daily living, as well as the description of variables of high importance as a year of publication, type of article, most used algorithms, types of dataset used, and metrics implemented. These data will allow the reader to locate the recent results of the application of this technique to a particular area of knowledge.

    Description: The following paper aims to prove the importance of embedding the regulatory framework when analyzing the distributed generation activity of an energy community. At present, most of the scientific literature has focused on distributed energy, and energy communities address the issue of regulatory frameworks qualitatively. In this paper, the most representative regulatory frameworks devoted to the promotion of energy communities were analyzed and synthesized, namely, feed-in tariffs, net metering, and the self-consumption scheme. As a result, an algebraic model able to represent the essence of the regulatory structures related to those remuneration mechanisms was obtained. Next, this model was embedded into a physical model, based on real data, previously created. The resulting Mixed Integer Linear Program (MILP) was used to identify the implications of these frameworks. The results demonstrate the impact of regulatory schemes on energy management and economic results of an energy community. Indeed, profitability changes drastically depending on which remuneration scheme is applied to an energy community.

    Description: The volume of magnetic components for space applications, directly related to the launch cost, and their performance are critically influenced by their capability to dissipate the internal electromagnetic power losses. This is the reason why accurate thermal models are required. Furthermore, these models need to be simple and versatile to allow a fast analysis of many different designs. In this study, a specific methodology to analyze inductors and transformers by thermal networks and a simplification based on the Thevenin’s theorem leading to a simple equation are proposed. The specific details to address thermal modelling for space magnetic components are discussed. A generic 50 W Flyback transformer for space applications is analyzed in this study and experimental validation is provided, showing that the proposed method leads to a deviation in the temperature estimation between 1 °C and 5 °C, which is considered quite a good result from the literature review carried out.

    Description: Product design has become a critical process for the healthcare technology industry, given the ever-changing demands, vague customer requirements, and interrelations among design criteria. This paper proposed a novel integration of fuzzy Kano, Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), Decision Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL), and Quality Function Deployment (QFD) to translate customer needs into product characteristics and prioritize design alternatives considering interdependence and vagueness. First, the customer requirements were established. Second, the fuzzy KANO was applied to calculate the impact of each requirement, often vague, on customer satisfaction. Third, design alternatives were defined, while the requirements’ weights were calculated using AHP. DEMATEL was later implemented for evaluating the interdependence among alternatives. Finally, QFD was employed to select the best design. A hip replacement surgery aid device for elderly people was used for validation. In this case, collateral issues were the most important requirement, while code change was the best-ranked design.
