    Description: Currently, many applications have emerged from the implementation of software development and hardware use, known as the Internet of things. One of the most important application areas of this type of technology is in health care. Various applications arise daily in order to improve the quality of life and to promote an improvement in the treatments of patients at home that suffer from different pathologies. That is why there has emerged a line of work of great interest, focused on the study and analysis of daily life activities, on the use of different data analysis techniques to identify and to help manage this type of patient. This article shows the result of the systematic review of the literature on the use of the Clustering method, which is one of the most used techniques in the analysis of unsupervised data applied to activities of daily living, as well as the description of variables of high importance as a year of publication, type of article, most used algorithms, types of dataset used, and metrics implemented. These data will allow the reader to locate the recent results of the application of this technique to a particular area of knowledge.

    Description: Floods cause damage to people, buildings and infrastructures. Due to their usual location near rivers, water utilities are particularly exposed; in case of flood, the inundation of the facility can damage equipment and cause power outages. Such impact leads to costly repairs, disruptions of service, hazardous situations for personnel and public health advisories. In this work, we present an analysis of direct and indirect damages of a drinking water supply system considering the hazard of a riverine flooding as well as the exposure and vulnerability of the system components (i.e. pipes, junctions, lifting stations etc.). The method is based on the combination of a flood model and an EPANET-based piping network model implementing Pressure-Driven Demand, which is more appropriate when modeling water distribution networks with many off-line nodes. The two models are linked by a semi-automated GIS procedure. The evaluation of flood impact on the aqueduct network is carried out for flood scenarios with assigned recurrence intervals. Vulnerable elements exposed to the flood are identified and analyzed in order to determine their residual functionality and simulate failure scenarios. Impact metrics are defined to measure service outage and potential pipe contamination. The method is applied to the water supply system of the city of Florence (Italy), serving approximately 385 000 inhabitants. Results show that for the worst failure scenario 420 km of pipeworks would require flushing and disinfection with an estimated cost of 21 Mio €, which is about 0.5 % of the direct flood losses evaluated for buildings and contents.

    Description: Floods cause damage to people, buildings and infrastructures. Water distribution systems are particularly exposed, since water treatment plants are often located next to the rivers. Failure of the system leads to both direct losses, for instance damage to equipment and pipework contamination, and indirect impact, since it may lead to service disruption and thus affect populations far from the event through the functional dependencies of the network. In this work, we present an analysis of direct and indirect damages on a drinking water supply system, considering the hazard of riverine flooding as well as the exposure and vulnerability of active system components. The method is based on interweaving, through a semi-automated GIS procedure, a flood model and an EPANET-based pipe network model with a pressure-driven demand approach, which is needed when modelling water distribution networks in highly off-design conditions. Impact measures are defined and estimated so as to quantify service outage and potential pipe contamination. The method is applied to the water supply system of the city of Florence, Italy, serving approximately 380 000 inhabitants. The evaluation of flood impact on the water distribution network is carried out for different events with assigned recurrence intervals. Vulnerable elements exposed to the flood are identified and analysed in order to estimate their residual functionality and to simulate failure scenarios. Results show that in the worst failure scenario (no residual functionality of the lifting station and a 500-year flood), 420 km of pipework would require disinfection with an estimated cost of EUR 21 million, which is about 0.5 % of the direct flood losses evaluated for buildings and contents. Moreover, if flood impacts on the water distribution network are considered, the population affected by the flood is up to 3 times the population directly flooded.

    Description: Emergent paradigms of Industry 4.0 and Industrial Internet of Things expect cyber-physical systems to reliably provide services overcoming disruptions in operative conditions and adapting to changes in architectural and functional requirements. In this paper, we describe a hardware/software framework supporting operation and maintenance of software-controlled systems enhancing resilience by promoting a Model-Driven Engineering (MDE) process to automatically derive structural configurations and failure models from reliability artifacts. Specifically, a reflective architecture developed around digital twins enables representation and control of system Configuration Items properly derived from SysML Block Definition Diagrams, providing support for variation. Besides, a plurality of distributed analytic agents for qualitative evaluation over executable failure models empowers the system with runtime self-assessment and dynamic adaptation capabilities. We describe the framework architecture outlining roles and responsibilities in a System of Systems perspective, providing salient design traits about digital twins and data analytic agents for failure propagation modeling and analysis. We discuss a prototype implementation following the MDE approach, highlighting self-recovery and self-adaptation properties on a real cyber-physical system for vehicle access control to Limited Traffic Zones.

    Description: The Faculty of Engineering was born in Florence only 50 years ago, and with Mechanical and Electronics Engineering formed the first nucleus of an area now represented by the Departments of Industrial Engineering (DIEF) and Information Engineering (DINFO). Along these 50 years, several transitions have been triggered by technological advancements, from Personal Computers, the World Wide Web and cellular telephony, to the interconnection of data and computing capabilities, integrated into industrial processes and supported by the development of transportation systems, up to the most recent challenges of artificial intelligence and energy transition. In this scenario, the University has contributed to the growth of research in the technological area, a fundamental engine for regional development towards innovation and a sustainable future.
