Description: Prostate cancer (PCa) is a multifactorial disease involving complex genetic and environmental factors interactions. Gene-gene and gene-environment interactions associated with PCa in Chinese men are less studied. We explored the association between 36 SNPs and PCa in 574 subjects from northern China. Body mass index (BMI), smoking, and alcohol consumption were determined through self-administered questionnaires in 134 PCa patients. Then gene-gene and gene-environment interactions among the PCa-associated SNPs were analyzed using the generalized multifactor dimensionality reduction (GMDR) and logistic regression methods. Allelic and genotypic association analyses showed that six variants were associated with PCa and the cumulative effect suggested men who carried any combination of 1, 2, or ≥3 risk genotypes had a gradually increased PCa risk (odds ratios (ORs) = 1.79–4.41). GMDR analysis identified the best gene-gene interaction model with scores of 10 for both the cross-validation consistency and sign tests. For gene-environment interactions, rs6983561 CC and rs16901966 GG in individuals with a BMI ≥ 28 had ORs of 7.66 (p = 0.032) and 5.33 (p = 0.046), respectively. rs7679673 CC + CA and rs12653946 TT in individuals that smoked had ORs of 2.77 (p = 0.007) and 3.11 (p = 0.024), respectively. rs7679673 CC in individuals that consumed alcohol had an OR of 4.37 (p = 0.041). These results suggest that polymorphisms, either individually or by interacting with other genes or environmental factors, contribute to an increased risk of PCa.

Description: This paper presents the formulae and finite element analysis models for predicting the Modulus of Elastic (MOE) and Modulus of Rupture (MOR) of Cathay poplar finger-jointed glulam. The formula of the MOE predicts the MOE of Cathay poplar glulam glued with one-component polyurethane precisely. Three formulae are used to predict the MOR, and Equation (12) predicts the MOR of Cathay poplar glulam precisely. The finite element analysis simulation results of both the MOE and MOR are similar to the experimental results. The predicted results of the finite element analysis are shown to be more accurate than those of the formulae, because the finite element analysis considers the glue layers, but the formulae do not. Three types of typical failure modes due to bending were summarized. The bending properties of Cathay poplar glulam were compared to those of Douglas fir glulam. The results show that Cathay poplar glulam has a lower stiffness, but a marginally higher strength. One-component polyurethane adhesive is shown to be more effective than resorcinol formaldehyde resin adhesive for Cathay poplar glulam. This study shows that Cathay poplar has the potential to be a glulam material in China.

Description: Remote Sensing, Vol. 10, Pages 871: Region-Wise Deep Feature Representation for Remote Sensing Images Remote Sensing doi: 10.3390/rs10060871 Authors: Peng Li Peng Ren Xiaoyu Zhang Qian Wang Xiaobin Zhu Lei Wang Effective feature representations play an important role in remote sensing image analysis tasks. With the rapid progress of deep learning techniques, deep features have been widely applied to remote sensing image understanding in recent years and shown powerful ability in image representation. The existing deep feature extraction approaches are usually carried out on the whole image directly. However, such deep feature representation strategies may not effectively capture the local geometric invariance of target regions in remote sensing images. In this paper, we propose a novel region-wise deep feature extraction framework for remote sensing images. First, regions that may contain the target information are extracted from one whole image. Then, these regions are fed into a pre-trained convolutional neural network (CNN) model to extract regional deep features. Finally, the regional deep features are encoded by an improved Vector of Locally Aggregated Descriptors (VLAD) algorithm to generate the feature representation for the image. We conducted extensive experiments on remote sensing image classification and retrieval tasks based on the proposed region-wise deep feature extraction framework. The comparison results show that the proposed approach is superior to the existing CNN feature extraction methods.

Description: Sensors, Vol. 17, Pages 2677: Stretchable, Highly Durable Ternary Nanocomposite Strain Sensor for Structural Health Monitoring of Flexible Aircraft Sensors doi: 10.3390/s17112677 Authors: Feng Yin Dong Ye Chen Zhu Lei Qiu YongAn Huang Harmonious developments of electrical and mechanical performances are crucial for stretchable sensors in structural health monitoring (SHM) of flexible aircraft such as aerostats and morphing aircrafts. In this study, we prepared a highly durable ternary conductive nanocomposite made of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), carbon black (CB) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) to fabricate stretchable strain sensors. The nanocomposite has excellent electrical and mechanical properties by intensively optimizing the weight percentage of conducting fillers as well as the ratio of PDMS pre-polymer and curing agent. It was found that the nanocomposite with homogeneous hybrid filler of 1.75 wt % CB and 3 wt % MWCNTs exhibits a highly strain sensitive characteristics of good linearity, high gauge factor (GF ~ 12.25) and excellent durability over 105 stretching-releasing cycles under a tensile strain up to 25% when the PDMS was prepared at the ratio of 12.5:1. A strain measurement of crack detection for the aerostats surface was also employed, demonstrating a great potential of such ternary nanocomposite used as stretchable strain sensor in SHM.

Description: The advancement in science and technology has led to luffa sponge (LS) being widely used as a natural material in industrial application because of its polyporous structure and light texture. To enhance the utility of LS fibers as the reinforcement of lightweight composite materials, the current study investigates their water absorption, mechanical properties, anatomical characteristics and thermal performance. Hence, moisture regain and tensile properties of LS fiber bundles were measured in accordance with American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standards while their structural characteristics were investigated via microscopic observation. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to observe the surface morphology and fractured surface of fiber bundles. The test results show that the special structure where the phloem tissues degenerate to cavities had a significant influence on the mechanical properties of LS fiber bundles. Additionally, the transverse sectional area occupied by fibers in a fiber bundle (SF), wall thickness, ratio of wall to lumen of fiber cell, and crystallinity of cellulose had substantial impact on the mechanical properties of LS fiber bundles. Furthermore, the density of fiber bundles of LS ranged within 385.46–468.70 kg/m3, significantly less than that of jute (1360.40 kg/m3) and Arenga engleri (950.20 kg/m3). However, LS fiber bundles demonstrated superior specific modulus than Arenga engleri.

Description: Sustainability, Vol. 10, Pages 722: Assessment of and Improvement Strategies for the Housing of Healthy Elderly: Improving Quality of Life Sustainability doi: 10.3390/su10030722 Authors: I-Ming Feng Jun-Hong Chen Bo-Wei Zhu Lei Xiong Global population is aging, particularly in developed countries and cities. Through the “Friendly Elderly Cities” and “Aging in Place” initiatives, various countries are making great efforts to improve the welfare and quality of life of the elderly, with the aim of catering to the physical and spiritual health as well as social welfare of the elderly. In this regard, the improvement of the housing environment of the elderly is one of the key factors in their quality of life and health. This study aims to effectively assess and improve the housing environment of the elderly in order to enhance their quality of life; it also aims to contribute the knowledge about improving elderly housing by applying an assessment framework using expert interviews and data collected from relevant literature. Using a mixed Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis model, a combination of the DEMATEL (Decision Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory)-based ANP (Analytic Network Process) (DANP) and the modified VlseKriterijumska Optimizacija I Kompromisno Resenje (VIKOR) methods, and the investigations and assessments in the case study, this study proposes strategies and directions for improving elderly housing. The study results indicate that, as distinct from using traditional methodologies where the hypothesis criteria are mutually independent, the proposed hybrid model (examining real-life problems by considering the mutual influences of factors) identifies a priority sequence wherein emphasis is placed on improving ventilation and air quality rather than adjustment of temperature. The systemic way of thinking shifts the focus from the most apparent problems to the root cause of the problems. Doing so avoids any mismatch of resource allocation in decision-making and thus maximizes the efficiency and sustainability of the improvement.

Description: We address the problem of authentication and secure communication between wearable devices. As people rely heavily on such mobile and wearable devices, the need for seamless and secure communication across these spectra of devices becomes increasingly important. In order to provide secure communication, mutually trusted authentication becomes the first line of protection to guard our personal information. We propose an acoustic-based signcryption mutual authentication (ASMA), which is a key-agreement protocol by employing timestamp and owning functions of multiple-times identity authentication, password change, and devices addition and alteration. Through series of experiments verifying the reliability and accuracy, the protocol shows that it can ensure secure data transmission and data sharing for multiwearable devices.

Description: Considering the diversity of demands in heterogeneous network selection problem, we combine Choquet integral with traditional aggregation operators in Pythagorean fuzzy environment, inventing kinds of new operators based on Choquet integral, including PFCOWA (as well as RP-PFOWA) operator, PFCWA operator, PFCOWG (as well as RP-PFOWG) operator, and PFCWG operator, which are capable of solving different attributes relationship prioritized situations. Then, transferring relationship and properties of the operators are further discussed. Additionally, to overcome the weakness of traditional method of evaluation, a novel evaluating system of QOE in fuzzy environment is proposed. Based on these works, an example of heterogeneous network selection is given to illustrate the validity of this method.
