    Relationships between engineers and marketers within new product development: An Anglo-German comparison (2004)

    Notizen: This paper presents a comparative study of the views of British and German engineers on the relationship between engineers and marketers and the conflict between them. Data have been collected from 151 British and 84 German engineers in 25 companies. Engineers who work in a variety of functions and at a number of different levels within an organisation are included. It has been found that the relationship is seen as being reasonable, with teamwork and increased knowledge of marketing by engineers both needed to make it function effectively. The engineers in both countries do not seek to dominate marketing, but they do feel that they need to obtain an understanding of management and of marketing. Conflict is not seen as being high in either country but German engineers perceive there to be lower levels of conflict between them and their marketing colleagues. German engineers see education and training differences as being the main reasons for conflict, whereas British engineers cite a lack of understanding between the two functions as the main reason. Engineers in both countries agree that better communications, more teamwork and more training are needed to improve the interface between the two functions. From this study, modifications to current theoretical frameworks can be seen and these are discussed.

    Notizen: This paper presents some of the findings to emerge from a qualitative study of social enterprise in the UK. The findings discussed in this paper refer to the marketing activities of social enterprises and consider the extent to which these can be described as "entrepreneurial". This discussion suggests that while social enterprises do engage in entrepreneurial marketing, the local embeddedness of their activities, their not-for-profit orientation and challenges posed by social exclusion impact on their marketing activities.

    Notizen: The reflectance spectra of natural and man-made surfaces are highly constrained. Statistical analyses have been conducted that confirm that the surface reflectance spectra form a set of band-limited functions with a frequency limit of approximately 0.02 cycles/nm. The reflectance spectra can be represented by a linear-model framework and are adequately described by 6-12 basis functions. However, the spectral properties of surfaces are not so constrained as to allow the human visual system to recover the surface properties from cone excitations. Furthermore, trichromatic colour devices such as scanners and cameras can only capture illumination-specific colour information.

    Notizen: The purpose of the study reported in this paper was to examine how manufacturing organisations used set-up time reduction and mistake proofing methods. The study was conducted in companies involved in manufacturing precision components. It was found that the companies were approaching the application of these concepts mainly through traditional work-study type methods rather than using Shingo's single minute exchange of die and poka-yoke or mistake proofing methodologies. There was clear evidence that the four companies are reducing set-up time through supporting mechanisms such as kaizen teams. The main poka-yoke devices used were jigs, gauges, pegs, lights and buzzers. Total productive maintenance, suggestion schemes and quality management tools and techniques were also employed to reduce set-up times and mistake proof processes. The main barriers to the application of these methods include traditional methods of working and resistance to change.

    Notizen: To understand the impact of earthquake experience and education on awareness, a survey was conducted with 1,065 high school first grade students from five prefectures of Japan. Results showed that earthquake experience is not the prime factor to enhance awareness. Education, when it is confined to school education, can provide useful information as the knowledge base for earthquake. However, in the gradual path of knowing, realizing, deepening, decision and action, family, community, and self education are found to be more prominent. While, self education is important for realizing and deepening, family and community education play the most vital role for decision and actions. In school education, more active ways of disaster education through conversation, experiencing, and visual aids are found to be more effective. It is believed that school education, coupled with self, family and community education can help a student to develop a "culture of disaster preparedness", which, in turn, will urge them to take right decisions and actions as an adult.

    Notizen: For corporations engaged in e-commerce, the Web serves as their primary interface with customers. Consequently, quality Web site design is a critical success factor for corporations with an e-commerce strategy. However, no comprehensive and coherent set of evaluation criteria exists that corporations and researchers can use to examine Web sites. This paper fills this gap by proposing Web site evaluation criteria and applying these criteria to different industry groups within Korea. Based on the literature survey, six categories of Web site evaluation criteria are defined: business function; corporation credibility; contents reliability; Web site attractiveness; systematic structure; and navigation. Using these criteria, Web sites in 12 industries were evaluated to determine if there are differences in Web site design between industries. The objective was to determine differences between industries which may provide information for benchmarking purposes. The results show significant differences in the design of Web sites across these different industry groups.

    Notizen: Managers know that customers' overall service quality perception and positive behavioral intentions toward the service provider are influenced strongly by effective complaint management. In this paper, we provide and test an explanation for how complaint management influences overall service quality perception and behavioral intentions. The implications of our model provide more focused guidance on complaint behavior management. It is suggested, based on our research, that service delivery and communications be used to emphasize a firm's strengths. Thus complaint management should also result in reinforcing the strengths of the firm and not just in covering up or fixing its problems. Finally, we wish to emphasize that customer expectations themselves change within the encounter itself and play a key role in the perception of service quality. Thus, the focus during service delivery should also concentrate on reinforcing customer expectations on the strengths of the service provider.

    Notizen: In this paper, the effectiveness of a number of active devices for the control of shock waves on transonic aerofoils is investigated using numerical solutions of the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations. A brief description of the flow model and the numerical method is presented including, in particular, the boundary condition modelling and the numerical treatment for surface mass transfer. Comparisons with experimental data have been made where possible to validate the numerical study before some systematic numerical simulations for a parametric study. The effects of surface suction, blowing, and local modification of the surface contour (bump) on aerofoil aerodynamic performance have been studied extensively regarding the control location, the mass flow strength and the bump height. The numerical simulations highlight the benefits and drawbacks of the various control devices for transonic aerodynamic performance and identify the key design parameters for optimisation.
