Notes: The article examines how purchase involvement theory can be used to assist marketing management in making more effective marketing mix decisions. The relationships between product purchase involvement and its antecedents are analysed, using examples from the Greek market for cheese. Mechanisms for measuring purchase involvement are identified. Product profiles are constructed for varieties of cheese and their usefulness as a segmentation tool is discussed. Implications of the results for marketing management and areas for further research are identified.

Notes: Notes that fresh fruit consumption in the UK is low, relative to most other EU countries, and static. Also that fruits which can be grown commercially in the UK, such as apples and strawberries, show a declining trend. Observes that in an increasingly competitive market-place, fresh fruit does not meet the evolving wants of key consumer groups. concludes fruit marketing organizations must invest in research and development to produce strong consumer-orientated proprietary products and, then, provide them with the promotional support that premium products warrant if they are to survive and prosper in markets which will come under increasing competitive pressure in the next decade and century.

Notes: Explores key trends explaining consumer concerns and actions onanimal welfare. Concludes that concerns are not a fad, but deep-seatedand here to stay. UK livestock production, distribution and processingsystems and practices have evolved, will and should evolve to allow farmanimals "to enjoy a decent life" and to satisfy reasonableconsumer concerns on animal welfare matters. Presents the UK industrywith both threats and opportunities. Livestock products that are animalwelfare-friendly, produced with traditional/natural methods and carry"passports" offer important consumer benefits that canprovide a competitive edge. The farm sector needs to forge allianceswith organizations, such as the RSPCA, which are viewed as credible onwelfare matters by consumers. However, addressing consumer concernsabout animals, per se, will not reverse the declining domesticmarket for livestock products - this will require morecomprehensive, industry-wide efforts to deliver the full range ofbenefits to consumers that they demand from food products in thetwenty-first century.

Notes: Discusses the recommendations of the Greenbury Committee on the remuneration of directors in public companies. Specifically comments on the following issues: the establishment, membership and status of remuneration committees in public companies; the determination of remuneration policy for executive directors; the disclosure and approval of the details of remuneration policy; the length of service contracts and the determination of compensation when these are terminated. Suggests that progress in implementing them should be monitored, given the importance of the Greenbury proposals.

Notes: While there is a vast literature on the effect of unemployment insurance on unemployment duration, in almost all of these studies the replacement ratio is the key explanatory variable. Does not contest the almost universal findings that the higher the ratio of unemployment income to that of previous earnings, the longer is unemployment duration, but finds that when pre-unemployment income itself is considered, duration is positively related to that income. Supports the positive view of the merits of unemployment insurance. While past studies emphasize the leisure aspect, unemployment insurance incorporates the ability to improve search through the use of unemployment insurance funds. This use of funds is particularly applicable to high income recipients.

Notes: Argues that branch security systems have to be designed to balancea number of often conflicting requirements since a totally secure branchcould be created, but it would be impossible to operate as a retailunit. There are, nevertheless, significant technical developments in thesecurity industry concerned with a range of electronic and physicaldevices for use at branch level and there is no doubt that these have asignificant effect on deterring robbery. There is a need, however, forhigher standards of co-operation between financial servicesinstitutions, manufacturers and installers of branch systems and thevarious regulatory authorities.

Notes: Discusses the Business Expansion Scheme (BES) which was extended in1988 to companies letting residential property on assured tenancies. This was intended to provide a stimulus to privately-rented housing inthe UK and to foster the development of more company landlords. Presentsthe results of research into the success and impact of the BES in theprivately-rented sector. In its nearly six years of existence the schemeattracted $3.4 billion of investment from private individuals, over 900 companies were formed and 81,000 dwellings were brought intothe private-rented sector at a cost of £1.7 billion in tax relief. While many of the new companies were not the new model landlords whichthe Government is trying to encourage (the scheme being adapted byuniversities, housing associations and mortgage lenders for their ownpurposes), the supply side impact has been considerable, accounting forup to one-sixth of new privately-rented properties and a more thandoubling of the number of "commercial" company landlords.Although many non-entrepreneurial company dwellings are likely to leavethe sector in the near future, recent taxation changes may allow manycommercial BES companies to continue letting.

Notes: Discusses the idea of a two-speed Europe in the light of the recent open letter from the governing parties in Germany. This letter raised the ideal of a two-speed Europe from a de facto configuration of the European economies to an explicit strategy for European integration. Puts forward the view of many commentators that several factors have made some kind of a two-speed arrangement inevitable and desirable. Outlines the costs and benefits of a two-speed Europe. Attempts to provide a model based on research that would allow these questions to be analysed in full. Concludes that if an adequate model is to be achieved, more academic resources are required.

Notes: This paper examines the make-up of the subcontract printed circuit board industry in the UK and identifies the geographical location of manufacturing sites together with the number of employees at these sites. It describes both the subcontract board-producing and assembly sectors. The maps show the position and size of the sites, and these together with a histogram showing the frequency of ranges of employee numbers, provide an understanding of the structure of the industry. Higher density areas which have a greater incidence of PCB manufacturing activity are identified and compared. It is also shown that there is little consistent relationship between the positions of the major system providers and the PCB subcontract industry sites. Concern is expressed about the ability of the many smaller companies to compete in the supply of emerging assembly and substrate technologies.
