    Notes: For trade union bargainers one of the infallible laws of political economy is that wages lag behind prices. This means that in an inflationary era the real value of the wage to which their members are entitled will be eroded, and some compensation will have to be made for this at the next round of wage negotiations. Therefore, changes in the cost of living since the last settlement will be regarded by trade unions as one of the most important factors to be taken into account in arriving at a new settlement. This is implicit in the statement made by the TUC in 1971 that “it requires pay increases of at least 10 per cent simply to restore the real disposable pay of a union's previous settlement 12 months earlier”. Economists, on the other hand, argue that once an inflation is under way, then economic agents will develop an inflationary psychology—that is, they will expect it to continue and will adjust their behaviour accordingly. If this is correct, trade union bargainers will attempt to anticipate inflation by trying to fix the money wage at a higher level than they would aim for if the price level were more stable.

    Notes: While there is a vast literature on the effect of unemployment insurance on unemployment duration, in almost all of these studies the replacement ratio is the key explanatory variable. Does not contest the almost universal findings that the higher the ratio of unemployment income to that of previous earnings, the longer is unemployment duration, but finds that when pre-unemployment income itself is considered, duration is positively related to that income. Supports the positive view of the merits of unemployment insurance. While past studies emphasize the leisure aspect, unemployment insurance incorporates the ability to improve search through the use of unemployment insurance funds. This use of funds is particularly applicable to high income recipients.

    Notes: A mechanical device for the continuous purification of biological material using immunosorbent was developed. The system consists of heat-sealed nylon pouches containing agarose-bound antibody, attached to an endless 35 mm wide Mylar belt that passes through four chambers sequentially. The biological material is bound and dissociated, and the immobilized antibody is regenerated for repeated isolation and purification of antigen. The belt design incorporates features to minimize carry-over between chambers and prevent damage to the agarose-bound antibody in repeated passes through the system. An existing batch method for the purification of human placental alkaline phosphatase using immobilized rabbit antisera was adapted to continuous purification in the device. The belt contained a low affinity immunosorbent and made five complete passes through the system. A decrease in antigen binding capacity between free immunosorbent suspensions and belt immunosorbent in pouches was observed. This was shown to be the result of the diffusion resistance offered by the pouch and the short exposure times of each pouch in the chambers. A decrease in antigen binding capacity between successive belt passes was also observed, and resulted from the inability of the agarose in the pouches to resuspend completely after each pass. The low efficiency of the agitation method and the roller device used to squeeze the pouches were the reasons for this deficiency.

    Description: Tendons are prominent members of the family of fibrous connective tissues (FCTs), which collectively are the most abundant tissues in vertebrates and have crucial roles in transmitting mechanical force and linking organs. Tendon diseases are among the most common arthropathy disorders; thus knowledge of tendon gene regulation is essential for a complete understanding of FCT biology. Here we show autonomous circadian rhythms in mouse tendon and primary human tenocytes, controlled by an intrinsic molecular circadian clock. Time-series microarrays identified the first circadian transcriptome of murine tendon, revealing that 4.6% of the transcripts (745 genes) are expressed in a circadian manner. One of these genes was Grem2, which oscillated in antiphase to BMP signaling. Moreover, recombinant human Gremlin-2 blocked BMP2-induced phosphorylation of Smad1/5 and osteogenic differentiation of human tenocytes in vitro. We observed dampened Grem2 expression, deregulated BMP signaling, and spontaneously calcifying tendons in young CLOCKΔ19 arrhythmic mice and aged wild-type mice. Thus, disruption of circadian control, through mutations or aging, of Grem2/BMP signaling becomes a new focus for the study of calcific tendinopathy, which affects 1-in-5 people over the age of 50 years.
