    Notes: We report on an experimental investigation of the temperature dependence of the intermolecular dynamics in liquid benzene and toluene. With the use of THz time domain spectroscopy we measured the complex dielectric function (0.2–3.3 THz) of the liquids, at temperatures between −6 °C and 75 °C. By analyzing the dielectric loss (as opposed to the absorption coefficient) we found three contributions to the dielectric function for toluene and two for benzene. In the dipolar liquid toluene we observed a contribution from rotational diffusion at lower frequencies in addition to the two high-frequency librations also observed in benzene. The temperature and density dependence were different for the two librational bands, probably due to the different effect of three-body interactions for the two processes. Furthermore, we present measurements of the low-frequency depolarized Raman spectra as a function of temperature for benzene and toluene. These have been compared with the dielectric loss at similar temperatures. Moreover, for benzene a similar comparison is made between the dielectric loss and the reduced Raman susceptibility obtained by optical Kerr effect spectroscopy. Libration of the symmetric top axis is found in all spectra. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The dielectric function of liquid benzene at −4 °C, 21 °C, and 65 °C has been calculated from molecular dynamics simulations. The simulated dielectric loss curves reproduce the experimental temperature and density trends. In order to investigate the detailed influence of temperature and density changes as well as the underlying molecular mechanism we have taken advantage of different partitioning and projection schemes for the total dipole moment time correlation function (TCF). The study of the n-body partitioning showed that the temperature dependence of the two- and three-body contributions at t=0 can be explained solely by density change arguments. The molecular projection scheme showed that the dielectric loss is governed by out-of-plane libration at all temperatures. In-plane libration was found to contribute significantly only below 2 THz. Below 1 THz, diffusion, manifested as the negative cross correlation between the out-of-plane and the in-plane TCF's, plays a role very different from that of the directly observed diffusion in dipolar liquids. It has further been established that it is highly problematic to carry out an analysis of the dielectric loss function in terms of the molecular axis rotational TCF's which is a common procedure for the absorption spectrum. This problem was, however, solved by employing a molecular projection scheme. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We report measurements of the real and imaginary part of the dielectric constant of liquid water in the far-infrared region from 0.1 to 2.0 THz in a temperature range from 271.1 to 366.7 K. The data have been obtained with the use of THz time domain reflection spectroscopy, utilizing ultrashort electromagnetic pulses generated from a photoconductive antenna driven by femtosecond laser pulses. A Debye model with an additional relaxation time is used to fit the frequency dependence of the complex dielectric constants. We obtain a fast (fs) and a Debye (ps) relaxation time for the macroscopic polarization. The corresponding time correlation functions have been calculated with molecular dynamics simulations and are compared with experimental relaxation times. The temperature dependence of the Debye relaxation time is analyzed using three models: Transition state theory, a Debye–Stoke–Einstein relation between the viscosity and the Debye time, and a model stating that its temperature dependence can be extrapolated from a singularity of liquid water at 228 K. We find an excellent agreement between experiment and the two latter models. The simulations, however, present results with too large statistical error for establishing a relation for the temperature dependence. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Description: The summer of 1997 was characterized by unusually large amounts of pack ice in the southeastern Weddell Sea, and less than 10% of the area that is commonly ice-free in summer was open. A modest phytoplankton bloom developed in the upper mixed layer in the northernmost area (72°S). The bloom peaked in mid-February with max chlorophyll concentrations of 1.5 μg l−1, and integrated stocks of 55–60 mg m−2. Autotrophic flagellates dominated the biomass (80–90% of the chlorophyll) at first, while diatoms increased relative to flagellates during the bloom. Nutrient deficits, however, indicated that a much larger biomass was produced than was observed. Freezing starting after mid-February probably terminated the bloom, resulting in a pelagic growth season limited in time (less than two months) and space. The sea ice had a distinct brown layer of algae, usually at 1–2 m depth, with average chlorophyll biomass of 10.3 mg m−2. The ice cover exhibited a substantial amount of ridges, with ice algae growing in cavities and other structures, but with lower biomass than in the bands. Ice algae were also found growing on the lower 2 m of the ice shelf (visible at low tide). The overall growth season in the ice lasted several months, and ice algal production may have exceeded pelagic production in the Weddell Sea during the growth season of 1997. Pennate diatoms, like Fragilariopsis curta and F. cylindrus, dominated both in ice and in open water above the pycnocline, while Phaeocystis antarctica dominated in deeper layers and in crack pools. Euphausiids, particularly young stages, were frequently observed grazing on ice algae in ridges and on all sides of the floes, (confirmed by the gut content). Ice algae would thus have served as an ample food supply for the krill in the summer of 1997.

    Description: Gravity change on a glacier surface is a composite of several effects (e.g. melting and accumulation of snow and ice, redistribution of mass with depth by refreezing of meltwater and height and thickness changes of the snow and ice layers). Models and equations necessary to estimate the measured gravity change due to different effects are presented, and the propagation of observational errors is evaluated. The paper presents experiences with ground-based gravity measurements carried out on Hardangerjøkulen, Norway, in spring and autumn 2007. It was found that the vertical gradient of gravity contributes most to the uncertainty in the determined mass change. With present instrumentation, gravity can be measured with the required accuracy to determine the mass loss to ∼10% of the loss determined by conventional mass-balance measurements. Improvements in field procedures to achieve the required accuracy for measuring the mass/density changes directly, combining gravity measurements and GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite Systems), are discussed.

    Description: Mass-balance measurements were initiated in 2007/08 on Sørbreen, Jan Mayen, including operation of automatic weather stations in the ablation zone. Mean daily melt rate is 3.6 cmw.e. d−1 for the investigated snow-free period of 115 days in June-September 2008. During this period, the net radiation is the largest contributor to melt. However, the relative contribution is highest in June (81%) and less in September (21%). The net longwave radiation is negative, acting as a heat sink. The climate on Jan Mayen is polar maritime with generally high humidity and overcast conditions. This leads to a positive latent heat flux, which represents condensation to the glacier surface. Persistent temperature inversions on the island lead to non-linear lapse rates and an ablation profile where melt does not necessarily decrease with increased elevation. A comparison of air temperatures on the glacier and twice-daily radiosonde ascents from the meteorological station, ∼ 20 km away from the glacier, shows that air temperatures at corresponding elevations are highly correlated (R2 = 0.94–0.96). This indicates that radiosonde temperature profiles can be valuable for determining lapse rates for melt modeling of the glacier.

    Description: A helicopter-mounted low frequency ice-radar has been developed for the depth sounding of temperate glaciers. The radar consists of standard transmitter and digital receiver equipment. The long antennae are supported on a special aluminium and fibreglass construction which hangs 20 m below the helicopter. The radar has been used on Engabreen, an outlet glacier of the Svartisen Ice Cap in northern Norway, where ice thicknesses of up to 350 m were obtained. The results have been used to construct a map of bed topography of the lower part of Engabreen. This map is largely consistent with ice thickness data obtained by drilling.

    Description: A field of vectors showing the average velocity of the surging glacier Osbornebreen, Svalbard, was determined by comparing sequential SPOT (Système pour l’Observation de la Terre) and Landsat thematic mapper images. Crevasses which developed during the initial phase of the surge in the winter of 1986–87 were tracked using a fast Fourier chip cross-correlation technique. A digital elevation model (DEM) was developed using digital photogrammetry on aerial photographs from 1990. This new DEM was compared with a map drawn in 1966. The velocity field could be almost entirely determined with 1 month separation of the images, but only partly determined with images 1 year apart, due to changes of the crevasse pattern. The velocity field is similar to that found for Kronebreen, a continuously fast-moving tidewater glacier. No distinct zones of compressive flow were present and the data gave no evidence of a compression zone/surge front traveling downstream. The velocity field, the rapid advance of the terminus and the development of transverse crevasses in the upper accumulation area within a 6 month period may indicate that the surge developed as a zone of extension starting near the terminus and propagating quickly upstream. The crevasse pattern in the images is therefore interpreted to be the result of the extension zone traveling upstream, and, as the whole glacier starts to slide, the crevasse pattern alters according to the bedrock topography.
