Notizen: SYNOPSIS. In cattle fed a high-starch diet, species of Entodinium and Diplodinium ingested associated ruminal bacteria. Stained preparations of diluted rumen contents showed Entodinium caudatum, E. minimum, E. dubardi, (syn. E. simplex), E. longinucleatum, E. bursa, E. nanellum, E. exiguum, and E. vorax contained gram-positive diplococci. Starch grains with adherent gram-positive diplococci were observed within Entodinium spp. Diplodinium ecaudatum forma ecaudatum, D. ecaudatum forma caudatum, D. neglectum and an unidentified species of Diplodinium also ingested ruminal diplococci. Bacteria were isolated from mixed species of Entodinium by washing and culturing the protozoa in a starch feed-extract agar medium. The strains isolated from the ciliates were gram-positive diplococci, 0.8 times 1–1.5 μm, which attached themselves to starch granules and were able to digest the starch. Conclusive evidence of bacterial ingestion by the oligotrichs was obtained by providing the bacterial cultures to Entodinium species (E. dubardi and E. minimum) which had been starved 24 hr. Gram-stained preparations showed the ciliates readily ingested the bacteria. The amylolytic cocci utilized by Entodinium spp. were identified as Streptococcus bovis.

Notizen: Additive genetic variance in large-seeded common beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), mostly of Andean South American origin, was higher than nonadditive variance for all traits. Heritability was 0.43 ± 0.19 for yield, 0.49 ± 0.20 for pods/m2, 0.63 ± 0.21 for seeds/m2, 0.76 ± 0.23 for 100-seed weight, and 0.55 ± 0.22 for days to maturity. Expected gain from selection (expressed in percentage of the population mean) was 9.2 for yield, 12.8 for pods/m2, 21.0 for seeds/m2, 17.6 for 100-seed weight, and 4.6 for days to maturity.

Notizen: Two populations of common bean, Phaseolus vulgaris L., were used to make three independent location-specific selections at Palmira, Quilichao, and Popayán, Colombia. Also, three across-location selections were made by alternating generations between Palmira and Popayan, between Quilichao and Popayán, and among Palmira, Quilichao, and Popayán. The seven highest yielding lines selected from each environment and population along with 14 parents and two checks were evaluated for seed yield, seed weight, maturity, and reaction to an-thracnose, angular leaf spot, and common bacterial blight. Mean squares due to evaluation and selection environments, selected lines, and their interactions were significant for all traits. Mean yields of selected lines were higher than the mean of parents in both populations. Among location-specific selections, lines yielded higher at their respective selection site. Moreover, selections made at Popayán were higher yielding than those made at Quilichao or Palmira when tested across locations and years. Use of Popayán, a relatively wetter and cooler site, either alone or in combination with other locations resulted in higher yield, higher seed weight, and higher resistance to anthracnose. On the average, location-specific selections were lower yielding than the across-location selections. Among across-location selections, those selected between Palmira and Popayán were the highest yielding in both populations. Selections at Palmira and across all three locations resulted in greater stability.

Notizen: Glucokinase (GK) catalyses the first step of hepatic glycolysis to store the excess dietary glucose. After rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss were fed a single meal with dietary glucose and fructose, there was induction of GK expression, although no specific effect of dietary fructose was observed. This suggested that dietary fructose is not essential to improve dietary glucose Utilization.

Notizen: Plasma amino acid (AA) levels of carp, Cyprinus carpio L., 1758, were analysed after various periods of starvation as well as after 12 days of refeeding. The levels were compared to control groups, which had been previously fasted for 24 h. A positive correlation between dietary and plasma essential amino acid (EAA) concentrations was observed in all of the control groups. The effect of starvation on the dynamics of AA concentration was different according to the period of starvation. Fasting already produced a decrease of total α-AA levels at 2 days, and these low levels were maintained until 5 and 8 days. These short periods of fasting affected the levels of EAA (especially branched-chain AA) more than those of non-essential amino acids (NEAA). The only AA that increased was Ala, which rose at 5 days of starvation, surpassing the levels of the control group. These high levels were maintained until 19 days of starvation.A different situation was observed at 19 days, when an important increase of total α-AA levels was produced, the branched-chain AA being the most notable among EAA and Glu/Gln among NEAA. Later, at 50 days of starvation, total α-AA, EAA (except Leu and Ile) and NEAA decreased. After 50 days of starvation, 12 days of refeeding did not modify the levels of EAA and NEAA, and their concentrations were lower than those of the control group, which presented an increase of total AA at this time. The differences observed on the changes of individual AA levels are discussed.

Notizen: : Egg and egg preparations are important vehicles for Salmonella enteritidis infections. The influence of time-temperature becomes important when the presence of this microorganism is found in commercial shell eggs, particularly in countries where refrigeration is not mandatory as in Chile. The objective of this research was to develop a mathematical model to analyze the Salmonella enteritidis risk under variable ambient temperatures. Breakdown of vitelline egg membrane was assumed to be required for initiation of bacterial growth. When the critical factor concerning safety is the vitelline membrane breakdown, 15 °C was found to be the storage threshold temperature for a 30-d shelf life. This computer based tool can be used as a contribution in current regulation adjustments or modifications.
