    Notes: Abstract Rates of shallow slip on creeping sections of the San Andreas fault have been perturbed on a number of occasions by earthquakes occurring on nearby faults. One example of such perturbations occurred during the 26 January 1986 magnitude 5.3 Tres Pinos earthquake located about 10 km southeast of Hollister, California. Seven creepmeters on the San Andreas fault showed creep steps either during or soon after the shock. Both left-lateral (LL) and right-lateral (RL) steps were observed. A rectangular dislocation in an elastic half-space was used to model the coseismic fault offset at the hypocenter. For a model based on the preliminary focal mechanism, the predicted changes in static shear stress on the plane of the San Andreas fault agreed in sense (LL or RL) with the observed slip directions at all seven meters; for a model based on a refined focal mechanism, six of the seven meters showed the correct sense of motion. Two possible explanations for such coseismic and postseismic steps are (1) that slip was triggered by the earthquake shaking or (2) that slip occurred in response to the changes in static stress fields accompanying the earthquake. In the Tres Pinos example, the observed steps may have been of both the triggered and responsive kinds. A second example is provided by the 2 May 1983 magnitude 6.7 Coalinga earthquake, which profoundly altered slip rates at five creepmeters on the San Andreas fault for a period of months to years. The XMM1 meter 9 km northwest of Parkfield, California recorded LL creep for more than a year after the event. To simulate the temporal behavior of the XMM1 meter and to view the stress perturbation provided by the Coalinga earthquake in the context of steady-state deformation on the San Andreas fault, a simple time-evolving dislocation model was constructed. The model was driven by a single long vertical dislocation below 15 km in depth, that was forced to slip at 35 mm/yr in a RL sense. A dislocation element placed in the seismogenic layer under XMM1 was given a finite breaking strength of sufficient magnitude to produce a Parkfield-like earthquake every 22 years. When stress changes equivalent to a Coalinga earthquake were superposed on the model running in a steady state mode, the effect was to make a segment under XMM1, that could slip in a linear viscous fashion, creep LL and to delay the onset of the next Parkfield-like earthquake by a year or more. If static stress changes imposed by earthquakes off the San Andreas can indeed advance or delay earthquakes on the San Andreas by months or years, then such changes must be considered in intermediate-term prediction efforts.

    Notes: Abstract Intertidal communities at Macquarie Island (sub-Antarctic) were re-evaluated seven years after a small oil spill resulting from the grounding of the “Nella Dan”, and six years after the first assessment of biological impact. Sampling was conducted to evaluate community structure in three zones of the exposed rocky shore (upper red, kelp, and lower red) and in samples of Durvillaea antarctica holdfasts. There were no significant differences between the community structure in oiled and control locations in any of the three shore zones, but holdfast macrofaunal communities at oiled sites still showed evidence of impact. Holdfast community-structure in samples from heavily oiled sites showed moderate levels of recovery, with increased abundances of species which were considered sensitive to the oiling in the first post-impact studies and decreased abundances of opportunistic polychaete and oligochaete worms. In contrast, samples collected from the moderately oiled location at Secluded Bay showed little evidence of recovery. Holdfasts at this site were filled with sediment containing traces of diesel oil, and the macrofaunal community was dominated by opportunistic worms. This study clearly indicates that even small incidents of anthropogenic perturbation can have long-lasting consequences for marine communities at Macquarie Island.

    Notes: Abstract The reproduction of 9 species of littoral molluscs from the sub-Antarctic Macquarie Island was examined. The mode of larval development is reported for all species, and the reproductive patterns for 7 are described from collections taken monthly over a period of 1 year. Two species release gametes for external fertilization, whereas the other 7 have non-pelagic development via brooding or the laying of egg cases; some of these findings were deducted from examination of gonads rather than by direct observation. Features of reproduction important in any correlation between a littoral animal's reproduction and its habitat are discussed, and relationships between pelagic and non-pelagic development of the Macquarie molluscs and (a) distribution in the local environment and (b) habitat are drawn. The widely recognised correlation between species having a non-pelagic development and small number and large size of eggs is considered as a method for predicting the type of larval development (in terms of pelagic versus non-pelagic) from an examination of the ovary. It is suggested that further data on modes of development could be obtained from specimens of marine invertebrates collected throughout southern latitudes and that such data would enhance zoogeographical interpretations.

    Notes: Summary Seventy-six uncomplicated hypertensive patients treated in General Practice, whose seated diastolic blood pressure (Phase V) (dBP) remained ≥95 mmHg after a minimum of 4 weeks treatment with metoprolol 50 mg b.i.d. as antihypertensive monotherapy, were randomized to receive the selective ‘calcium antagonist’ felodipine 5 mg b.i.d. or hydrochlorothiazide 12.5 mg b.i.d. in addition to metroprolol 50 mg b.i.d. The trial duration was 8 weeks, the dose of the felodipine or hydrochlorothiazide being doubled after 4 weeks if ‘control’ of BP (dBP 〈90 mmHg) was not achieved on the initial doses. Over the trial period of 8 weeks, felodipine reduced dBP from 102 to 85 mmHg and hydrochlorothiazide from 101 to 91 mmHg; the dBP reduction in the felodipine group was greater than that in the hydrochlorothiazide group (17 vs 9 mmHg) and the attained dBP lower in the felodipine group. About half of the patients in each group required the higher dose. Both regimes were effective and well tolerated. In the dosages used, felodipine was a slightly more effective antihypertensive drug than hydrochlorothiazide when added to metoprolol. There was no apparent difference in the tolerability of the two regimes.
