    Notes: Abstract.— Two spawning and larval rearing trials with striped patao Eugerres brasilianus were conducted at Tunas de Zaza, Cuba, to develop a method for experimental-scale mass production of juvenile fish. Mature striped patao were captured from coastal lagoons in September 1988 and January 1989. Sexually mature females and males were induced to spawn by treatment with human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG). After spawning, eggs were collected and placed in 1.2-m3 cylindroconical fiberglass incubators at densities of 150 and 200 eggs/L. About 1 h before hatching, eggs were transferred to 5–m3 concrete tanks. Larvae were fed a mixture of marine microalgae, rotifers, copepods, and Artemia nauplii; artificial food was supplied at 30 d post-hatch as a shrimp diet with 25% protein and 0.1–0.4 mm particles. Fourteen of 20 females spawned after 2 or 3 HCG injections (total dose = 6–10 IU/g body weight). Fecundity was 467–2,167 eggs/g body weight. Egg incubation time in seawater (38–39 ppt salinity) was 15–17 h at 29–30 C and 21–23 h at 25–26 C, with 98–100% hatching rate. The oil droplet and yolk sac were consumed by 3 to 5 d post-hatch and first food (rotifers) was eaten during second day. High larval mortalities began after the first month. Growth in 39- ppt seawater was faster (0.41 ± 0.01 md/d) at 29.1 ± 0.3 C than at 25.2 ± 0.2 C (0.27 ± 0.008 mm/d). Overall survival was 6–12.5% with tinal densities of 5–10 juveniles/L after 48–60 d. A total of 132,000 juveniles was harvested from the two rearing cycles.

    Notes: Alcohols, esters and fatty acids in wines from red, rose and carbonic maceration of Monastrell grapes were measured during yeast fermentation. Isolated volatile compounds were analyzed by gas chromatography alone and with-mass spectrometry. Increases in these compounds was most important during the first days of fermentation and concentrations varied between vinifications. The lower fermentation temperature and shorter skin contact time of rose vinification produced higher concentrations of esters and acids than in red wine. The intracellular fermentation in carbonic maceration vinification resulted in formation of almost all esters and fatty acids before alcoholic fermentation started. The final wine was closer to rose than red wine in aromatic composition.

    Notes: Haematological and haemorheological responses against a moderate management stress, applied for 2 weeks, have been studied in the gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata). The stress application leads to a significant reduction in circulating erythrocytes, which caused decreased blood viscosity. Although erythrocyte osmotic fragility showed a trend inversely related to the duration of management stress, no significant change in cell dimensions, aggregation and deformation indices was observed. Consequently, the decrease in oxygen transport capacity attributable to haematocrit reduction, is not compensated by a qualitative change in the microrheological behaviour of erythrocytes, since the blood viscosity decreases as a direct result of the decline in red blood cell number.

    Notes: Intact fruit from five plum × apricot hybrids, two Japanese plums and seven apricots were sampled for their volatile constituents by headspace analysis to study the transmission of biochemical flavor constituents from apricot and plum to hybrids between them. Volatiles were collected in Tenax traps, eluted with ether, and examined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Forty-one compounds from seven chemical classes were identified in the fruit samples. Seven of the identified volatiles were unique to plumcot, and not present in either the plum or apricot parent. Aromatic profiles from plumcot accessions more closely resemble apricot profiles rather than plum.

    Notes: Abstract Extracts of exocellular products from Bifidobacterium adolescentis and their fractions were tested as immunomodifiers of the murine lymphoproliferative response. The extracts induced a dose dependent blastogenic activation which was higher for the fractions rich in polysacharides. When interacting with lectins, neither the extracts nor the protein-rich fractions produced any effect on the lymphoproliferative response. The carbohydrate-rich fractions stimulated DNA synthesis in LPS-sensitive B lymphocytes but decreased it in Con A-sensitive T lymphocytes.
