Notes: Abstract.— Two spawning and larval rearing trials with striped patao Eugerres brasilianus were conducted at Tunas de Zaza, Cuba, to develop a method for experimental-scale mass production of juvenile fish. Mature striped patao were captured from coastal lagoons in September 1988 and January 1989. Sexually mature females and males were induced to spawn by treatment with human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG). After spawning, eggs were collected and placed in 1.2-m3 cylindroconical fiberglass incubators at densities of 150 and 200 eggs/L. About 1 h before hatching, eggs were transferred to 5–m3 concrete tanks. Larvae were fed a mixture of marine microalgae, rotifers, copepods, and Artemia nauplii; artificial food was supplied at 30 d post-hatch as a shrimp diet with 25% protein and 0.1–0.4 mm particles. Fourteen of 20 females spawned after 2 or 3 HCG injections (total dose = 6–10 IU/g body weight). Fecundity was 467–2,167 eggs/g body weight. Egg incubation time in seawater (38–39 ppt salinity) was 15–17 h at 29–30 C and 21–23 h at 25–26 C, with 98–100% hatching rate. The oil droplet and yolk sac were consumed by 3 to 5 d post-hatch and first food (rotifers) was eaten during second day. High larval mortalities began after the first month. Growth in 39- ppt seawater was faster (0.41 ± 0.01 md/d) at 29.1 ± 0.3 C than at 25.2 ± 0.2 C (0.27 ± 0.008 mm/d). Overall survival was 6–12.5% with tinal densities of 5–10 juveniles/L after 48–60 d. A total of 132,000 juveniles was harvested from the two rearing cycles.

Notes: The fecundities of Mugil liza, M. hospes, M. curema and M. trichodon from Cuban waters were determined volumetrically. The subsamples obtained with a Bogorov pipette from a saturated salt solution had a coefficient of variation (C.V.) of 6.81% and did not introduce a bias. Since the fecundity-weight relationships were significantly different between species and between M. curema from different localities, this character might be used to discriminate between species and stocks of mugilids. There was the same ranked order for fecundity and growth rate of the different species; M. liza had the highest values followed by M. curema, M. hospes and M. trichodon..

Notes: In the present study, the establishment and validation of an ovarian biopsy method for in vivo assessment of oocyte maturation in the snook, Centropomus medius Günther, is described. Diameter and morphological characteristics of intra-ovarian oocytes siphoned with a polyethylene cannula were analysed fresh, preserved with 1% formalin in 0.7% NaCl solution and also cleared with Serra solution. There were no effects detected of the preservative solution on the opaque oocytes within the 24-h interval of the test. The clearing solution allowed excellent visibility of the membrane thickness, yolk appearance and germinal vesicle. Oocytes from each of the five ovarian sites of all examined females were in different prematuration stages and those on the tertiary yolk globule stage had a unimodal diameter frequency distribution and their diameter means were not significantly different among sites (P 〉 0.01) on eight females. In vivo and in vitro samples of the eight females examined were not significantly different (P 〉 0.05). As samples obtained with the polyethylene cannula are representative of the ovary central portion, an estimate of the coefficient of variation corrected for bias (P 〈 0.05) for 20 means of repeated in vivo samples was 1.4 ± 0.47. The results obtained demonstrate that for the species studied, the biopsy method is satisfactory, providing representative samples of the ovaries with the required precision.

Description: The regional component (∆R) of the marine reservoir effect (MRE), which is crucial for the accurate calibration of radiocarbon ages of marine-influenced samples, was determined for the Cuban northwestern coast. Fifteen different locations were studied by 14C dating of pre-bomb known-age marine shells specimens of bivalves and gastropods from the Felipe Poey Museum collection. Accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) 14C measurements were performed at the Radiocarbon Laboratory of the Universidade Federal Fluminense (LAC-UFF) and mean ΔR values were estimated. The distribution of results indicates ∆R values from −46±38 to 140±52 14C yr and a possible pattern related to the position along the coast and ocean dynamics. We present both mean values for each region and a general ∆R of 28±13 14C yr for the northwestern coast of Cuba.

The captures byreg1onsandthelandingsbycategoryandbyspecíescomposittonareanatysed.The11tuat10nolthegroupinrecentyearsisrev1ewed,inwhichthecapturesdecreasedtoonly5%oftheh1ghestleve!attamedduetoenvuonmentaldamagestocoastallagoonsandnearbyareascausadbyhumanactionsandbyalowerflsh1ngeffort.

Description: An intensive 4-day batch culture study of small rotifers, Brachionus rotundiformis Tschugunoff, 1921, to feed marine fish larvae was carried out, with Culture Selco Plus® as feed and pure oxygen. Best previous experimental treatments were applied, with pure oxygen, open flow, synthetic fiber for organic matter collection, metering pumps for feed supply and. With a stocking density of 252±21 rotifers/ml, a mean density of 1 595±53 rotifers/ml was reached at harvest, without significant differences between consecutive cycles. Environmental parameters were stable in acceptable intervals, with growth rate of 0.36±0.05, ≥ 0.3 fecundity, and ≥ 25 % of females with eggs. Financial study show low operational expenses, mostly depreciation (49 %), supplies (42 %) and labor costs (7 %). General operational cost, without packing expenses and income tax, was $0.13/million rotifers produced. Break-even point and break-even price were 230 million and $0.15 per million rotifers, respectively. These results are compared with other reports.
