Notes: Abstract The planktonic cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa is particularly sensitive to photoinhibition by visible light, Photosystem II and ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate (RuBP) carboxylase activities being affected. Although the organism contains superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase, these protective enzymes are also photoinactivated during the illumination of whole cells by visible light.

Notes: We analyse a new model to estimate the change in gravity and in elevation caused by volcanic eruption or inflation. In the new model, a permeable, porous zone surrounds a spherical magma chamber. Magma may enter or leave the magma chamber and, independently, the permeable zone. This arrangement simulates the flow processes inferred from field studies, and provides a degree of freedom not available in the classic model proposed by Mogi and used by many others since then. We find, in agreement with field data and previous analyses of the Mogi model, that the change in edifice volume is smaller than the volume of magma which produces it. The local change in gravity is found to be proportional to the local elevation change, the constant of proportionality being positive or negative, depending on whether magma flow is directed into or out of the chamber or infiltrated zone.

Notes: Abstract We find evidence that initial public offering (IPO) firms, on average, have high positive issue-year earnings and abnormal accruals, followed by poor long-run earnings and negative abnormal accruals. The IPO-year abnormal, and not expected, accruals explain the cross-sectional variation in post-issue earnings and stock returns. The results are robust with respect to alternative abnormal accruals and earnings performance measures. IPO firms adopt more income-increasing depreciation policies when they deviate from similar prior performance same industry non-issuers, and they provide significantly less for uncollectible accounts receivable than their matched non-issuers. The results taken together suggest opportunistic earnings management partially explains the new issues anomaly.

Notes: Abstract A new technique of calibrating a parallel-wire depth probe is presented. The technique allows the effects of electric conductivity of liquids to be compensated. The advantage of the probe lies in its simple AC circuitry employed which consists of only a variable resistor together with one AC input and an AC output. The compensation technique employs a two-staging compensation method that allows only one calibration curve to be used for measuring the depth of various liquids with different electric conductivity values.

Notes: Abstract The experimental investigations were consisting of two parts. The first part was carried out to study the effect of corner geometry on the steady-state forced convection inside horizontal isosceles triangular ducts with sharp corners. The electrically-heated triangular duct was used to simulate the triangular passage of a plate-fin compact heat exchanger. The isosceles triangular ducts were manufactured with duralumin, and fabricated with the same length of 2.4 m and hydraulic diameter of 0.44 m, but five different apex angles (i.e. θ a =15∘,30∘, 40∘,60∘, and 90∘) respectively. The investigation was performed under turbulent flow condition covering a wide range of Reynolds number (i.e. 7000≤Re D ≤20000). It was found that the best thermal performance is achieved with the apex angle of 60∘. The second part was performed to investigate the effect of surface roughness on the forced convection of the same system. Horizontal equilateral triangular ducts with an apex angle of 60∘ were fabricated with the same length and hydraulic diameter, but different average surface roughnesses of 1.2 m,3.0 m and 11.5 m respectively. It was concluded that the duct with a higher surface roughness will have a better heat transfer performance. Non-dimensional expressions for the determination of the heat transfer coefficient of the triangular ducts with different apex angles and surface roughnesses were also developed.

Notes: Abstract The disposition of the N-cyanoethyl analogue of tranylcypromine (TCP) and the TCP formed from it have been studied in the rat brain following intraperitoneal (ip) administration (0.1 mmol/kg) and the resultant data compared with those obtained following an equimolar dose of TCP. Brain concentrations of the neurotransmitter amines dopamine (DA) and noradrenaline (NA) have also been determined, as well as the percentage inhibition of monoamine oxidase (MAO) types A and B. Our results indicate that the N-cyanoethyl analogue may be a useful prodrug of TCP, providing lower but more sustained concentrations of TCP in brain. Brain levels of DA were increased in a similar pattern after CE-TCP or TCP. Brain levels of NA were decreased by TCP at most time intervals, while CE-TCP produced a much less pronounced effect. Both CE-TCP and TCP inhibited MAO-A and MAO-B, with maximum inhibition occurring 60 min after CE-TCP dosing and 30 min after dosing with TCP, times at which brain concentrations of CE-TCP and TCP were at the maximum.

Notes: Abstract An Euler/Navier-Stokes zonal scheme is developed to numerically simulate the two-dimensional flow over a blunt leading-edge plate. The computational domain has been divided into inner and outer regions where the Navier-Stokes and Euler equations are used, respectively. On the downstream boundary, compatibility conditions derived from the boundary-layer equations are used. The grid is generated by using conformal mapping and the problem is solved by using a compressible Navier-Stokes code, which has been modified to treat Euler and Navier-Stokes regions. The accuracy of the solution is determined by the reattachment location. Bench-mark solutions have been obtained using the Navier-Stokes equations throughout the optimum computational domain and size. The problem is recalculated with sucessive decrease of the computational domain from the downstream side where the compatibility conditions are used, and with successive decrease of the Navier-Stokes computational region. The results of the zonal scheme are in excellent agreement with those of the benchmark solutions and the experimental data. The CPU time saving is about 15%.
