    Notes: Twenty-one rice samples covering examples of aromatic, long and medium grain, instant, and parboiled products were evaluated by a group of 120 Asian consumers, currently living in the United States and by a professionally trained sensory panel. Results showed that imported Thai Jasmine rice was preferred by this group of Asian consumers over every other rice tested including domestically grown Jasmine rice. The most important acceptance factors for Asian consumers were cooked rice appearance and aroma. Predictive models of rice overall acceptance were evaluated using descriptive sensory evaluation data (i.e. including appearance, flavor and texture attributes). These models allowed the identification of sensory characteristics most important to rice acceptance by this consumer group. This information could be useful to rice breeders to select for specific sensory characteristics expected by Asian consumers.

    Notes: A rapid-screening technique was developed to identify Ethologies that best disperse artificial recharge via surface infiltration and minimize effects on ground water chemistry. The technique prospectively evaluates basin infiltration rates and water chemistry influences by integrating geotechnical, hydraulic, and water quality data with column test data and numerical modeling. The technique was validated using field data collected from surface infiltration basins designed to recharge ground water pumped from the Pipeline pit gold mine in Nevada. Observed recharge rates at these infiltration sites correlated most significantly with depth to groundwater, with basins in coarse-grained lithologies performing better (0.45 to 0.85 m/day) than those with fine-grained layers (〈0.30 m/day). Observed water quality resulting from leaching of the previously unsaturated vadose zone showed a transitory (〈 six months) increase in solute concentrations followed by a decrease to baseline conditions, a phenomenon also observed in column tests that leached native soils with local ground water. Leaching of fine-grained soils with evaporites resulted in greater solute concentrations (TDS 〉 2000 mg/L) than coarse-grained soils (〈1200 mg/L). The results of HYDRUS_2D simulations using the accumulated data as input were in agreement with observed ground water chemistry downgradient of the infiltration basins for a variety of lithologies. Sites for infiltration basins can be rapidly screened to include areas with greatest depth to groundwater and in coarsest alluvial sediments, and impact to ground water chemistry can be reliably predicted using computer modeling and column test results.

    Notes: A method is described to estimate the distribution of ground water recharge within hydrographic basins in the Great Basin region of the southwestern United States on the basis of estimated runoff from high mountainous areas and subsequent infiltration in alluvial fans surrounding the intermontane basins. The procedure involves a combination of Geographic Information System (GIS) analysis, empirical surface-runoff modeling, and water-balance calculations. The method addresses the need to develop and incorporate constraints on the distribution of recharge in regional-scale ground water flow modeling of arid and semiarid environments. The conceptual approach and methodology were developed for Crescent Valley, Nevada. However, the concept and method are generally applicable to any region where excess precipitation in upland areas is conveyed to lower elevations before it infiltrates to recharge the ground water system. Application of the procedure to a ground water flow model of Crescent Valley appears both qualitatively and quantitatively to result in a more accurate representation of actual recharge conditions than might otherwise have been prescribed.

    Notes: : Farm-raised channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus), rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), and red swamp crayfish (Procambarus clarkii) were collected from production and processing sites across the southern U.S. and analyzed for barium, cadmium, copper, chromium, silver, lead, arsenic, selenium, and mercury. Average metal residues were much lower than recommended safety limits. Residues of barium, copper, and mercury were slightly higher in crayfish than catfish or trout. Selenium was higher in crayfish and trout than catfish, and lead was higher in catfish and trout than crayfish. Residues of mercury in all samples were much lower than the FDA's Action Limit (1 ppm) for mercury in the edible tissue of fish.

    Notes: Salmonella spp. or Listeria innocua containing chicken patties were processed via a pilot-scale air-convection oven to a final temperature of 55 to 80 °C. Thermal processing was conducted at an air temperature of 149 °C, an air velocity of 7.1 to 12.7 m3/min, and a wet bulb temperature of 39 to 98 °C. The cooking time was correlated with cooking conditions using a standardized least square regression model. The models were developed to correlate cooking time and the thermal inactivation of Salmonella or Listeria with cooking conditions. The thermal lethality of Salmonella and Listeria increased with increasing product temperature and wet bulb temperature. This study bridged the gap between laboratory studies and commercial applications and will help commercial processors to evaluate and validate their thermal processes.

    Notes: Abstract.— Initial and confinement-induced changes of plasma cortisol were measured in channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus acclimated to upper and lower constant temperatures for each season, a spring/fall diurnal pattern between 15 and 26 C, and a summer diurnal pattern between 24 and 35 C. In diurnal treatments, temperature changes were achieved in 10 h and held constant for 2 h before reversing the temperature. Fish held in the spring/fall pattern or at a constant temperature of 15 or 26 C revealed no plasma cortisol concentration differences due to acclimation temperature, but hormone concentrations in all groups increased by about 4.5 fold following a 2-h confinement. Fish held on a summer pattern had differences in both the initial cortisol samples and those measured after confinement. Acclimation to a constant 35 C resulted in significantly higher initial cortisol concentrations, but these levels did not increase following confinement. The inability of the fish held at 35 C to respond to the confinement was thought to be due to the constant thermal stress, resulting in an inadequate interrenal reserve. Physiological consequences due to the diurnal physiochemi-cal cycling in ponds needs further attention.

    Notes: Equipment failures can have significant implications in terms of cost and customer satisfaction. Reducing the time required to find the cause of a failure can provide large cost savings and help preserve customer goodwill. Single-item discrete sequential search models can be used to sequence the tasks in diagnostic search to minimize the expected time required to find the cause of the failure. We increase the utility of the single-item discrete sequential search model by developing a formulation that includes simple precedence relationships as well as sequence dependent relationships defined by group activities. This formulation can be applied to a number of other problems including determining the sequence for multiple quality control tests on an item, scheduling oil well workovers to maximize the expected increase in oil production, and sequencing tasks in a research project where there is a technological risk associated with each task.

    Notes: Managers and analysts increasingly need to master the hands-on use of computer-based decision technologies including spreadsheet models. Effective training can prevent the lack of skill from impeding potential effectiveness gains from decision technologies. Among the wide variety of software training approaches in use today, recent research indicates that techniques based on behavior modeling, which consists of computer skill demonstration and hands-on practice, are among the most effective for achieving positive training outcomes. The present research examines whether the established behavior-modeling approach to software training can be improved by adding a retention enhancement intervention as a substitute for, or complement to, hands-on practice. One hundred and eleven trainees were randomly assigned to one of three versions of a training program for spreadsheets: retention enhancement only, practice only, and retention enhancement plus practice. Results obtained while controlling for total training time indicate that a combination of retention enhancement and practice led to significantly better cognitive learning than practice alone. The initial difference in cognitive achievement was still evident one week after training. Implications for future computer training research and practice are discussed.

    Notes: Trials were conducted to compare surrogate organisms (PSO) to human pathogens (Salmonella spp. and Escherichia coli O157:H7) on the surface of orange fruit. Among the six evaluated PSO, E. coli ATCC 8739 and E. coli ATCC 35218 showed a significantly lower attachment (SR) on fruit in comparison to Salmonella spp. In thermal tolerance studies, the D70C values of the evaluated PSO were either no different from or greater than those of the pathogens. However, the D80C ofE. coli ATCC 25922 was significantly lower than that of the E. coli O157:H7. In general, E. coli ATCC 11229 exhibited a higher level of alkali sensitivity than both pathogens; whereas Lactobacillus plantarum ATCC 14917 and, to a lesser extent, Lactobacillus fermentum ATCC 538 showed a significantly greater tolerance to the alkali treatments. The results suggest that nonpathogenic cultures ofE. coli ATCC 11229, L. fermentum ATCC 538, and L. plantarum ATCC 14917 may be utilized in fresh fruit research as surrogates for pathogens to evaluate the efficacy of thermal decontamination. In addition, E. coli ATCC 25922, L. fermentum ATCC 538, and L. plantarum ATCC 14917 cultures may be used to represent pertinent pathogens for validating fruit decontamination by alkaline cleaners.

    Notes: This study included semi-structured interviews with eight practitioners who have key roles in UK coastal management. Data from the interviews were analysed using ‘grounded theory’, which established that sources of uncertainty in decision making are diverse but can be categorised as being modelling issues, values issues, communication and ‘externalities’. At present, intuitive and implicit methods of taking uncertainty into account in decision making are much more prevalent than explicit methods. By identifying sources and implications of uncertainty, coastal managers will be in a stronger position to promote resilient systems that can cope with changing natural and social conditions.
