    Notizen: Proximate and micronutrient composition of cantaloupe and honeydew melons purchased from six marketing locations at marketing times near maximum and minimum product availability were determined. Cantaloupe varieties purchased at periods near maximum availability showed significantly higher (α= 0.01) levels of niacin, riboflavin, thiamin, ascorbic acid, folacin and Cr compared to those purchased near minimum availability. Honeydew melon varieties purchased at periods near maximum availability showed significantly lower (α= 0.01) levels of ascorbic acid, folacin, pantothenic acid, K, Zn, and Cr compared to those purchased near minimum availability. Although some differences were observed between values obtained and those reported in Handbook 8–9, proximate composition and mean values for micronutrients approximated those previously reported.

    Notizen: This study examines previously undescribed general and cytopharyngeal features of the genus Entodinium. The cytopharynx contains three types of microtubular ribbons underlying the cytostomal membrane as well as a loose palisade of nematodesmata. A protoesophagus composed of microtubular bundles associated with a fibrous wall lies internally to one side of an extrusible peristome on which the adoral zone of syncilia (AZS) is mounted. Macronuclear structures are very similar to those of other ophryoscolecids. The micronucleus has chromatin bodies forming a compact mass but lacks the thick wall found in other species. A tubular spongiome surrounds the contractile vacuole and the cytoproct is relatively undifferentiated. Cortical structure follows the usual five-layered ophryoscolecid pattern with subcortical barren kinetosomes arranged into indistinct kineties. The infraciliature of the AZS has kinetosomes set upon a subkinetal rod and with associated bifurcated kinetodesmata and transverse microtubules, some of which extend into the cytopharynx. Components newly described for Entodinium are the one to three postciliary microtubules and the interkinetosomal centro-lateral strand, all of which are present in other species of ophryoscolecid ciliates. The infraciliature of the paralabial ciliary tuft shows similar components to that of the main AZS, but lacks the subkinetal rod. The microtubular components of the cytopharynx are discussed in relation to the “alimentary” structures in other ophryoscolecids, and a relationship of these structures to dietary differences is suggested.

    Notizen: Macronuclear DNA synthesis normally continues until late in the cell cycle in Paramecium; however, blockage of macronuclear DNA synthesis after 0.72 in the cell cycle does not alter the occurrence or timing of the subsequent cell division. When DNA synthesis is blocked after cells have reached the transition point, macronuclear DNA content at the following division is reduced to about 75% of the normal level. The point at which macronuclear DNA synthesis is no longer required for division corresponds to the beginning of micronuclear mitosis and the early stages of oral morphogenesis.

    Notizen: The anterior adoral zone of syncilia (AZS) of Eudiplodinium maggii is mounted on an extrusible peristome within a vestibulum. The peristome contains cytopharyngeal components derived from the infraciliature. These components include a crescent-shaped palisade of nematodesmata, two types of sub-membrane cytopharyngeal ribbons, and an ensheathing fibrous layer enclosing a phagoplasmic zone containing the other components. A convoluted esophagus is continuous with and extends from the posterior of the cytopharynx adjacent to the macronucleus. A posterior cytoproct has specialized cytoplasm around it and associated myoneme-like elements. The skeletal plate is composed of finely granular platelets and lies under the cortex ventral to the macronucleus. The endoplasm is separated from the ectoplasm by a fibrous boundary layer. The cortex has an external glycocalyx, a membranous layer, epiplasm, and microtubular and microfilament layers. The AZS infraciliature is of the usual cntodiniomorph type, kinetosomes linked by a sub-kinetosomal rod and with associated bifurcated kinetodesma, postciliary and transverse microtubules-the latter extending into the cytopharynx—nematodesmata, and a fibrous reticulum. A possible vestigial, somatic infraciliature consisting of short, barren kinetosomes with associated basal and cortex-directed microtubules and a periodic incomplete fiber, is found subcortically throughout the cell.

    Notizen: A low-rate aquifer pumping test was conducted in a folded and fractured limestone formation in the Conasauga Group of East Tennessee. An elongate drawdown pattern was observed, suggesting that pumping response was controlled by a highly conductive zone associated with a pair of anticlinal folds that bisect the test site. This drawdown pattern, the nonlinearity of graphs of observation well drawdown versus the log10 of time, and the existence of a linear relationship between drawdown and the square root of pumping time indicate that flow in response to pumping was nonradial. Thus, use of pumping test interpretive techniques based on radial flow models would be invalid. This situation may occur frequently when pumping tests are done in low-permeability media, because fractures and other discontinuities often dominate the hydraulic behavior of low-permeability media.The solution technique used to estimate aquifer parameters (Gringarten and Witherspoon, (1972) treats the fold axes as a highly conductive vertical fracture in an anisotropic matrix of much lower hydraulic conductivity. The complexity of both the site and the solution technique necessitated iterative trial-and-error variable substitution to estimate aquifer parameters. The resulting solution includes estimates of matrix transmissivity in two directions, the storage coefficient of the matrix, and the effective length and location of the master fracture. Estimates of hydraulic parameters lack the apparent precision of values that would be generated by radial flow techniques, but they are consistent with geologic conditions at the site and present a clearer picture of the hydrogeologic regime than could be obtained with other investigative techniques. The solution technique used, whose field application has not been described previously in published literature, makes it possible to interpret the results of aquifer tests in complex hydrogeologic settings. This and related analytical techniques for other nonradial flow situations may prove useful in other hydrogeologic investigations in low-permeability media affected by folds, faults, fractures, or solution channels.
