    Description: Phase equilibrium relationships in igneous systems can be estimated using empirical mathematical models based on multi-component regular solution formulae. Although these provide useable results within the fitted region, they can give very misleading values outside the compositional range of curve fitting. Moreover, they usually give poor estimates of the well-characterized melting relations of simple systems and do not relate to the large body of thermodynamic activity data available in the metallurgical literature, nor to spectroscopic, diffraction or computational models of silicate melt properties. The aim of this paper is to extend previous acid-base models of silicate melts and to use a quasi-chemical model to calculate the activities of quasi-chemical silicate mixing units, or structons, from combinations of the oxo-species used in quasi-chemical and polymer models to calculate oxide activities in metallurgy.

    Description: An ecosystem-based approach to bivalve aquaculture management is a strategy for the integration of aquaculture within the wider ecosystem, including human aspects, in such a way that it promotes sustainable development, equity, and resilience of ecosystems. Given the linkage between social and ecological systems, marine regulators require an ecosystem-based decision framework that structures and integrates the relationships between these systems and facilitates communication of aquaculture–environment interactions and policy-related developments and decisions. The Drivers-Pressures-State Change-Impact-Response (DPSIR) management framework incorporates the connectivity between human and ecological issues and would permit available performance indicators to be identified and organized in a manner that facilitates different regulatory needs. Suitable performance indicators and modeling approaches, which are used to assess DPSIR framework components, are reviewed with a focus on the key environmental issues associated with bivalve farming. Indicator selection criteria are provided to facilitate constraining the number of indicators within the management framework. It is recommended that an ecosystem-based approach for bivalve aquaculture be based on a tiered indicator monitoring system that is structured on the principle that increased environmental risk requires increased monitoring effort. More than 1 threshold for each indicator would permit implementation of predetermined impact prevention and mitigation measures prior to reaching an unacceptable ecological state. We provide an example of a tiered monitoring program that would communicate knowledge to decision-makers on ecosystem State Change and Impact components of the DPSIR framework.

    Notes: Abstract  Cattle DRA and DRB genes, cloned by reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction, were transfected into mouse L cells. The cattle DR-expressing L-cell transfectant generated was analyzed serologically, biochemically, and functionally. Sequence analysis of the transfected DRB gene clearly showed showed that it was DRB3 allele DRB3 * 0101, which corresponds to the 1D-IEF-determined allele DRBF3. 1D-IEF analysis of the transfectant confirmed that the expressed DR product was DRBF3. Functional integrity of the transfected gene products was demonstrated by the ability of the transfectant cell line to present two antigens (the foot-and-mouth disease virus-derived peptide FMDV15, and ovalbumin) to antigen-specific CD4+ T cells from both the original animal used to obtain the genes, and also from an unrelated DRBF3+ heterozygous animal. Such transfectants will be invaluable tools, allowing us to dissect the precise contributions each locus product makes to the overall immune response in heterozygous animals, information essential for rational vaccine design.

    Notes: Abstract— This article examines the morphology and ecology of Arctic charr Salvelinus alpinus in Loch Ericht, Scotland, Gill netting revealed that two forms of charr existed within the loch, a pale form and a colored form. Multivariate analysis of nine size-corrected morphometric measurements of the head region revealed that pale and colored charr differed significantly in the size and shape of the head characteristics and that both groups were easily discriminated on the basis of these characteristics. Stomach contents showed that the colored form fed predominantly on zooplankton and the pale form mainly consumed benthic macro-invertebrates, with larger pale individuals consuming other fish. On the basis of diet and morphology, the terms planktivorous and piscivorous were adopted for the two forms respectively. Length at age also distinguished the two groups, with piscivorous charr being smaller than colored charr up to age 8+ then surpassing the maximum length attained by planktivorous charr at ages of 9+ and above. The results are discussed in relation to other instances of sympatric morphs of Arctic charr.
