Notes: Abstract: The clonal relationship of thirty E. coli strains of 0 antigen serotype 06 isolated from human, dog, pig or cow infections were investigated. Two main clones with serotypes 06:H1 or 06:H31, H− were identified. Isolates from humans, dogs, pigs and cows were found in both clones, indicating that animals are a possible source for human extraintestinal Escherichia coli strains. Two human ETEC (06:H16) and two pig isolates (06:H10) were not related to the 06:H1 or 06:H31, H−E. coli clones.

Notes: Confocal scanning optical microscopy (CSOM) was used to observe the internal structure of frankfurters and summer sausage. This new method allows optical sectioning of thick specimens and thus avoids the potential problem of smearing encountered when fat globules and bacteria are at the surface of sections.

Notes: Postmortem storage of bovine psoas major muscle resulted in almost complete degradation of nebulin by 48 hr; however, some intact titin was still observed after 2 wk storage at 4°C. The percentage of myofibrils having four anti-titin bands per sarcomere (immunofluorescence microscopy) was less than 1% at 45 min but increased to 65% at 48 hr after death and remained stable thereafter. A similar four band pattern was seen in frozen sections of whole muscle at 48 hr or more postmortem. The time course of nebulin degradation appeared to correlate with the titin two to four band transition.

Notes: The paper starts from Schumpeter's interpretation of Adam Smith's concept of the contemporary embryonic industrialist whose main function was considered to be the accumulation of capital. The author traces the development of this concept in the nineteenth century and tries to explain its origin. He shows that medieval reality, i.e. the relationship between stans and transactor in the societas maris is at the root of Smith's concept. It remained justifiable as late as 1776 on the basis of the cooperation of capitalist and entrepreneur-manager in the early mechanized cotton industry, as it is presented in Robert Owen's autobiography. But just this self-testimony shows also the rapid change of this relationship after the appearance of the Wealth of Nations, which neither the classical economists nor Marx under-stood in their implications. From this came an unfortunate economic legacy, the misunderstanding of certain aspects of entrepreneurship, which only Schumpeter discarded on principle in his Theory of EconomicDevelopment.

Notes: A tritium profile obtained from a core located on the Tipton Till Plain near West Lafayette, Indiana, showed a “tritium reversal” (corresponding to a low-high-low activity of tritium relative to depth) at 7 m, indicating the present position of recharge water derived from 1963/64 precipitation. The average recharge rate calculated using the tritium data is 3.5 cm/yr for the “mass-balance” method and 4.7 cm/yr for the “transit-time” method. The average of 4.1 cm/yr is in reasonable agreement with Arihood's (1982) estimate of 5.1 cm/yr for tills, based on numerical modeling of data from a water-budget study in the White River basin of Indiana. Two other cores, located on a nearby topographically lower slope, showed no definite reversal in tritium activity, probably because of lateral flow components at these locations. To be applied, the tritium technique should assess the contribution of summer and winter precipitation to recharge because tritium activities tend to peak in spring and summer precipitation. Contrary to the usual assumptions that recharge to aquifers in temperate zones of the northern hemisphere occurs between October and April, stable isotopic data of well water in the study area indicate that an appreciable amount of annual recharge (about 34%) actually occurs between April and October.

Notes: Delineating ground-water flow paths is difficult to accomplish in desert terranes because paucity of wells and boreholes yields little data to construct hydrologic interpretations based upon physical parameters. This is especially true in the Big Bend National Park where, in a study area encompassing over 500 km2, there are only four wells and six perennial springs. These wells and springs were sampled and analyzed for major-element chemistry as well as for stable and naturally occurring radioactive isotopes to identify sources of recharge for the springs which discharge along banks of arroyos incised in alluvial pediment lying about 900 meters below the uplands of the Chisos Mountains. The springs recharge could be from three sources: (1) infiltration of precipitation falling on the desert floor to discharge at nearby arroyos; (2) infiltration of water at the onlap of the alluvial fan with the crystalline rock of the Chisos uplands and subsequent flow within the fan toward lowland springs; and (3) upward migration of deep-seated water. Of these, the third scenario is least compatible with respect to temperature, dissolved oxygen, and isotopic data. The waters total dissolved solids and calcite saturation indices increase with decreasing altitude, suggesting recharge from the Chisos uplands. However, temperature, dissolved oxygen, δ18O, tritium, and Carbon-14 data indicate a significant recharge component to springs occurs by infiltration of infrequent precipitation falling on the arid alluvial lowlands. This water percolates through the soil zone to aquitards (essentially calcitic hardpans) which function as horizons which channel the water laterally toward discharge in springs. The springs recharge-to-discharge paths are short with flow being slow enough to reflect seasonal temperature differences of greater than 12°, yet recent enough to contain post-bomb spikes of tritium and Carbon-14.
