Notes: Purpose - To provide positive benchmarking examples of hospitality, tourism and leisure small management enterprises in the area of organizational culture. Design/methodology/approach - Extreme case sampling was used; locating information-rich key informants or critical cases. A total of 89 small businesses were researched including hotels (and guest houses), restaurants, pubs, visitor attractions and leisure opportunities. Findings - Semi-structured interviews were analysed using an iterative approach based on the assumptions of Argumentation Theory. Results suggest that best-performing small to medium-sized (SME) operations in the hospitality, tourism and leisure industry share certain elements of culture including: supporting values such as building the future together, cooperative setting of missions and strategies, development of teamwork and organizational learning. Research limitations/implications - The research completed is illustrative of positive benchmarking elements of organizational culture. Further research, however, could also look at negative features which may hinder the success of hospitality, tourism and leisure industry SMEs. Practical implications - The work provides clear suggestions for hospitality, tourism and leisure industry SMEs to improve managerial practice, focusing on five main cultural dimensions: organizational performance, teamwork, building the future together, building the ability to learn, and collaborative setting of strategies. Originality/value - This paper begins to fill the gap of a very under-researched area: benchmarking organizational culture in hospitality, tourism and leisure industry SMEs. Both academics and practitioners will find it very illuminating.

Notes: This study explores organizational culture by examining the relationship between total quality management (TQM) and culture, and specifically three elements of a culture related to quality improvement: customer focus, employee involvement, and continuous improvement. Process reengineering is used as an alternative management initiative. A survey of 220 mid-level professionals in 123 organizations was conducted to determine the extent to which there is a relation between the presence of these cultural elements, and the presence of TQM reengineering. The success of process improvement through either TQM or reengineering is used as a vehicle for examining the importance of these cultural elements. The importance of organizational culture and the implications for managers are discussed.

Notes: Abstract. In order to investigate gene expression changes associated with cytotoxicity, we used cDNA arrays to monitor the expression of over 5,000 genes in response to toxic stress in the HepG2 liver cell line. Cells were treated with cytotoxic doses of acetaminophen, caffeine or thioacetamide for nine time points ranging from 1 to 24 h. Samples of mRNA from each time point were used to prepare radiolabeled cDNA, which was hybridized to nylon-membrane-based cDNA arrays. High-stringency washes were applied to reduce cross-hybridization. Analysis of spot intensities revealed that each compound led to approximately 150-250 gene expression changes that were sustained over at least three adjacent time points. The affected genes could be classified into clusters based on their temporal patterns of differential expression. A common set of 44 genes showed similar expression changes in response to all three compounds. Of these changes, 90% could be confirmed by quantitative RT-PCR analysis. The results indicate that detailed array-based time-course studies, coupled with a sensitive and highly specific confirmation assay, provide a powerful means of identifying cytotoxicity-associated gene expression changes.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung 1. Sole von Fe(OH)3, Cr(OH)3, As2S3, Sb2S3, AgI.I′, AgBr.Br′, AgI.Ag′ und AgBr.Ag′ wurden durch langsames Hinzufügen von Koagulatorlösungen ausgefällt. 2.
Notes: Summary 1. Sols of Fe(OH)3, Cr(OH)3, As2S3, Sb2S3, AgJ.J′, AgBr.Br′ AgJ.Ag′ and AgBr.Ag′ were coagulated by the slow addition of coagulator solutions. 2. Banded coagulations of the sols were observed for definite concentrations of the coagulator solutions, which approach the flocculation value for the particular sol and it can be said that it is a step-wise process in the precipitation of the two solutions, which form a precipitate. 3. The experiments support the author's explanation of theLiesegang phenomenon (cf. 7c). 4. If regarded from this point of view, the experiments of the various workers indicate that theLiesegang phenomenon cannot but be an outcome of the protective action of the lyosphere and electrolyte coagulation.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung 1.
Notes: Summary 1. Experiments are described in which periodic coagulation is produced in As2S3 and Fe(OH)3 sols by colloids having opposite charges. 2. The effect of different lyophilic structures is studied. The function of the jellies is to offer their solvated shells or lyosphere for the protection of the hydrophobic particles of the sols. 3. The results can be explained by the coagulation theory as proposed by the author. 4. These and other results described in the various publications show that the formation ofLiesegang rings is a special case of periodic coagulation wherein the coagulants are electrolytes.

Notes: Abstract Racemic ethyl 2-acetamido-2-carboxy-5-oxohexanoate has been isolated by single hydrolysis of the corresponding diethyl ester and resolved essentially quantitatively by diastereomeric salt formation with (−)-quinine. The (+)-isomer was retrieved from the less-soluble quininium salt. Racemate crystals, (plusmn;)-1, are monoclinic, space group P21/c, a = 7.609(4)Å, b = 16.731(7)Å, c = 10.746(5) Å, β = 99.83(4)° enantiomeric crystals, (+)-1, are monoclinic, space group P21, a = 5.857(2)Å, b = 15.282(4)Å, c = 7.618(2)Å, β = 95.62(2)°. Molecular packing is similar in the two structures; the enantiomer has a 0.7% higher volume per molecule and the lower fusion temperatures by 3°C. In both structures, carboxylic acids donate hydrogen bonds to the amide carbonyls of adjacent molecules without reciprocation. Amides form three-centered hydrogen bonds to carboxy oxygen of an intramolecular carboxylic acid group and to oxygen of a ketone carbonyl in an adjacent molecule.

Notes: Abstract Tin (IV) chloride reacts with sulfolane (S) to form a cis-octahedral adduct SnCl4·S2. Solutions of lithium chloride and tin (IV) chloride in sulfolane contain the complex ions SnCl 5 − and SnCl 6 2− at 1∶1 and 2∶1 mole ratios of constituents, respectively. The complexes are characterized by conductimetry and by Mössbauer, IR, and Raman spectroscopy.

Notes: Summary Uric acid and other purines including 1-methyl-, 7-methyl-, and 1,7-dimethyluric acid, adenine, guanine, xanthine, hypoxanthine, purine, and the structurally similar compound allopurinol protected ascorbic acid from oxidation catalyzed by copper. If the hydrogen at either the 3 or 9 nitrogen of the uric acid was replaced by a methyl group, the compound did not protect ascorbate. 3-Ribosyluric acid, xanthosine, adenosine, and guanosine also failed to protect ascorbate. It was concluded that in order for purines to complex with copper to protect ascorbate from copper-catalyzed oxidation, the nitrogens at both positions 3 and 9 of the purine must be unsubstituted.
