Notes: Abstract This paper presents a simple, reliable, economical, safe, accurate and reproducible method for atmospheric aerosol lead determination in glass fiber filters, consisting on an acid digestion procedure and atomic absorption spectrometry quantification. The acid digestion is accelerated by the use of a microwave oven with capped Teflon PFA vessels, and a two steps power and time program. The mixture of 10 mL HNO3 and 1 mL HF was selected between many tries, for both economic and environmental reasons. The use of direct standards for quantification is proposed instead of added standards on filters, using background correction (deuterium lamp). The filter lead content quantification was carried out through blank analyses. Lead determinations were carried out then in 2629 samples of atmospheric aerosol at three sampling points in the city of Cartagena (Spain), from 1990 to 1994. We present the annual average of these values for each year and sampling location.

Notes: Abstract We have studied the effects of various meteorologicalparameters and plant distribution on the airborneconcentrations of three different pollen types:Chenopodiaceae-Amaranthaceae, Quercus and Olea, in the city of Cartagena, situated in SouthwestEurope. The aerobiological study has been carried outfrom March 1993 to March 1997, using a Hirst-typeLanzoni 2000 trap, situated on the roof of the citytrain station. Meteorological data were supplied bythe Environmental Service of Cartagena's Town Hall.Daily pollen concentrations were standardised.Correlation analysis showed the importance ofmeteorological data on airborne pollen concentrations. On the other hand, ANOVA analyses depicted theinfluence of vegetation distribution in relation tosampler location and wind directions. Finally, multiple regression analyses allowed us to developcorrelation models for the three different pollentypes considered, accounting for 32%(Chenopodiaceae-Amaranthaceae), 19% (Quercus),and 26% (Olea) of the variation in the airbornepollen concentration.

Description: Introduction: Acquired thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (aTTP) is a rare disease characterized by a severe deficiency of the enzymatic activity of ADAMTS13 caused by autoantibodies, with an incidence of 3-4 x106inhabitants per year according to the few published data available. Accurate estimates of the incidence of aTTP are important to assess the resources required for current treatments and to anticipate the need to develop new treatments. The aim of this study was to determine the actualincidence of aTTP in Spain, as well as its diagnosis, management, and associated complications. Material and methods:A cross-sectional surveywascarried out among hematologists working in Spanish hospitals by means of an email that was sent to all members of the three main hematological scientificsocieties of Spain. All participants were asked to report the number of patients over the age of 16 years with a de novodiagnosis and relapses examined between Jan 2015 and Dec 2017. They were also asked about the number of patients that were known and alive in each hospital without having experienced any episode during such period. The population area of each participating hospital was consideredto calculate the incidence and prevalence of the disease. We also estimated the hospitalization service, mean hospital stay, percentage of ADAMTS13 activity at diagnosis and during follow-up, initial management, refractory cases and exacerbations (as defined by Scully et al.), treatment-related complications, and sequelae of aTTP. The median, interquartile ranges, and percentages were used for the descriptive analysis. Given that no personal data were treated, this study did not require the approval of a Research Ethics Committee. Results:A response was received from 42 centers (Figure 1). All hospitals except a private one belonged to the Spanish public health system, which provides health coverage to the entire Spanish population.A total of 203 episodes were reported (138 new episodes). The calculated population of the participating centers was nearly 21 x 106inhabitants. The incidence was 2.25 x106inhabitants per year, and the prevalence 19 x106inhabitants. Six patients died before they could start treatment (all but one in first episodes) and five were sent to other hospitals; thus, a total of 192 episodes were eventually treated. Table 1 and 2 show the data of the enzymatic activity of ADAMTS13 and the ADAMTS13 inhibitor at diagnosis, as well asthe complications. Plasma exchange (PEX) was performed by the Hematology and Nephrology Departments of 29 (70.7%) and 12 (29.3%) hospitals, respectively. The median hospital stay was 14 days (IQR: 10-20). Seventy-five episodes (39.1%) required admission to the intensive care unit with a median stay of 4 days (IQR: 3-7). During first-time episodes, a median of 12 PEX procedures (IQR: 8-19) were performed per patient, whereas in the case of relapses, a median of 9 (7-10) PEX procedures were carried out per patient. One plasma volume (PV) was used in the PEX procedures performed in 34% of the episodes, while 1.5 PVs were used in 56% of the episodes, and other PVs were used in the remaining 9.8%. The median duration of the PEX procedures was 121 minutes (IQR: 118-180). PEX and corticosteroids were the initial treatments administered in 98.4% of the episodes. Rituximab was used as a first-line treatment for new episodes in 18 of the 127 patients (14.1%), as a second-line treatment in 34 patients (26.6%), and as a prophylactic treatment (followingremission) in 4 patients (3.5%). In addition to the 6 early deaths, 9 patients died despite receiving the treatment (15 of 203 episodes, accounting for a mortality rate of 7.3%). Refractoriness to the PEX + corticoids was observed in 31 episodes of the 192 ones treated (16.1%), and at least one exacerbation (26.5%) took place in 51 episodes. Conclusion.Wecalculated the incidence ofclinically diagnosed aTTP associated with a severe ADAMTS13 deficiency inalmost half of the Spanish population which provided a high accuracy to our findings. These data are concordant with those published previously in other countries. Despite the currently available therapies, considerable rates of refractoriness and mortality still persist. Our data will be very useful for estimating the budget invested in this pathology and proposing standards for the diagnosis and treatment of this disease in our region. Description: The combination of measurements of the W boson polarization in top quark decays performed by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations is presented. The measurements are based on proton-proton collision data produced at the LHC at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV, and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 20 fb−1 for each experiment. The measurements used events containing one lepton and having different jet multiplicities in the final state. The results are quoted as fractions of W bosons with longitudinal (F0), left-handed (FL), or right-handed (FR) polarizations. The resulting combined measurements of the polarization fractions are F0 = 0.693 ± 0.014 and FL = 0.315 ± 0.011. The fraction FR is calculated from the unitarity constraint to be FR = −0.008 ± 0.007. These results are in agreement with the standard model predictions at next-to-next-to-leading order in perturbative quantum chromodynamics and represent an improvement in precision of 25 (29)% for F0 (FL) with respect to the most precise single measurement. A limit on anomalous right-handed vector (VR), and left- and right-handed tensor (gL, gR) tWb couplings is set while fixing all others to their standard model values. The allowed regions are [−0.11, 0.16] for VR, [−0.08, 0.05] for gL, and [−0.04, 0.02] for gR, at 95% confidence level. Limits on the corresponding Wilson coefficients are also derived.

Notes: Abstract  The levels and burdens of Cd, Zn, Cu and Hg were measured in the dorsal mantle, digestive gland and gonads of the squid Illex argentinus, from the Southwest Atlantic Ocean. Mature and immature individuals of both sexes were analysed. Correlations of heavy metal concentrations and burdens with sex and food habits were studied. The highest metal levels were found, particularly for Cd, in the digestive gland, which attained a concentration of up to 270 μg g−1 (wet weight). Dorsal mantle and gonads exhibited the same order of metal enrichment: Zn〉Cu〉Cd. Zinc and Cu levels were higher in ovaries than in testes and varied with the stage of maturation. The dorsal mantle exhibited the lowest heavy metal concentrations. Mercury levels were below the detection limit of the method in all the tissues analysed.

Notes: Abstract Serre has obtained sharp estimates for the number of rational points on an algebraic curve over a finite field. In this paper we supplement his technique with divisibility properties for exponential sums to derive new bounds for exponential sums in one and several variables. The new bounds give us an improvement on previous bounds for the minimum distance of the duals of BCH codes. The divisibility properties also imply the existence of gaps in the weight distribution of certain cyclic codes, and in particular gives us that BCH codes are divisible (in the sense of H. N. Ward).

Notes: Abstract The aim of the present study is to analyze the morphologic changes occurring along the period of a woman's life thatareknown as climacterium. Our sample consists of 648 women from different provinces of Cuba, but who lived in Havana for at least 15 years. Morphological variables such as height, weight, biliocristal and biachromial diameters and six subcutaneous fat skinfolds were measured. With regard to the menopausic condition, the sample was divided into three subpopulations: premenopausic, naturally menopausic and surgically menopausic (when the two ovaries had been removed). Age at menopause was calculated by both the “retrospective” (49.45±0.49) and “status quo” (48.83±0.02) methods. The results obtained point towards morphological differences between pre- and postmenopausic women. We observed greater accumulations of fatty tissue in the suprailiac regions of postmenopausal females. Lean body mass represents a bigger fraction of the total body weight in women who are still menstruating. In the case of surgically menopausic women, they are at a mid-distance between the premenopausic and naturally menopausic subpopulations. A discriminant analysis was carried out which confirmed the results previously observed. From this analysis it appeared the body mass index and the subcutaneous skinfolds are the variables that discriminante, that is, separate, the three subsamples.

Notes: Abstract Health status and immunocompetence have been proposed as important factors affecting individual variation in the attainment of breeding condition in birds. We studied individual variation in serological variables indicating health status (blood sedimentation rate, haematocrit, `buffy coat' layer, proportions of different types of leucocytes) in two groups of breeding chinstrap penguins Pygoscelis antarctica with breeding dates 9 days apart. We sampled these individuals shortly after hatching of their young and at the end of the chick-raising period. A group of failed breeders was also sampled. Birds of both sexes were included. We also measured the T-cell-mediated immune response as indicated by an in vivo hypersensitivity response to an intradermal injection of a mitogen (phytohaemagglutinin) in early and late breeders. Sex had no significant effect on most variables. Late breeders had poorer health (more leucocytes, especially heterophils and lymphocytes) and a lower T-cell-mediated immune response than early breeders. Failed breeders were more similar to late than to early breeders. Early breeders suffered a decline in health status throughout the chick-raising period. The impact of pathogens on variation in life history traits in avian populations may be important even in extreme Antarctic environments.

Notes: Abstract  To evaluate levels of essential (zinc and copper) and non-essential (mercury and cadmium) heavy metals, 34 species of organisms from different areas close to the Antarctic Peninsula were analysed. These included algae, filter-feeders, omnivorous invertebrates and vertebrates. Mercury was not detected, while cadmium was found in the majority of organisms analysed (detection limit was 0.05 ppm for both metals). The highest cadmium concentration was observed in the starfish Odontaster validus. Anthozoans, sipunculids and nudibranchs showed maximum levels of zinc, while the highest copper level was found in the gastropod Trophon brevispira. Mercury and cadmium levels in fishes were below the detection limit. Concentrations of essential and non-essential metals in birds were highest in liver followed by muscle and eggs. Cadmium and mercury levels in muscle of southern elephant seals were above the detection limit, whereas in Antarctic fur seals they were below it. The objective of the study was to gather baseline information for metals in Antarctic Ocean biota that may be needed to detect, measure and monitor future environmental changes.
