Description / Table of Contents: Abstract Extremal fundamental systems are nodal systems with a small Lebesgue-constant (≤dimension). An exchange algorithm for their calculation in case of polynomial interpolation over the unit ballB r is realized. ForB 3 and algebraic degree 6, a system consisting of 84 nodes and with a Lebesgue-constant 〈26 is documented, the corresponding cubature leading to a relative error of ≈10−8 in case of analytic functions.

Notes: Abstract Extremal fundamental systems are nodal systems for which the Lagrangians have minimal norm which then is one. Hence they consist of points not distinguished one against another by definition, they are “equidistributed”, in some sense. The calculation of extremal fundamental systems can be performed by a Remez-type algorithm in combination with Newton's method, the method is applied to the most interesting polynomial spaces.

Notes: Abstract Solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance techniques have been used to show that CO adsorbs in a molecular state on γ-Mo2N (fcc). An axially symmetric chemical shift powder pattern is observed for13CO adsorbed at 298 K. The observed lineshape is very similar to that observed for Mo(CO)6. Lineshapes for the α (hcp) and β (fcc) phases of Mo2C were also recorded for comparison.

Notes: Summary The theory of Hermite-spline interpolation on the equidistant latticeZ is written in purly real terms and this for an arbitrary polynomial degree, Hermitian order and node-shift parameter. An explicit representation formula for the Hermitian fundamental splines (Lagrangians) is presented and the convergence of the corresponding Lagrange-series is discussed.

Notes: Summary The approximability of a real analytic function on the standard interval [−1, 1] by polynomials depends essentially only on the size of its ellipse of analyticity. If the interval is subdivided byn+1 points, the same holds for each subinterval. For a fixed singularity, it becomes a purely geometric question to find how the partition has to be chosen such that the worst rate of approximation attains its minimum. We prove that for anyn their exists a unique optimal partition, which solves a nonlinear difference equation. We give an asymptotic expression for it.

Notes: Abstract An experiment on deep inelastic muon nucleon scattering in order to study the x-dependence of nucleon structure functions and their ratios over a range ofQ 2=50–200 GeV2 andx= =0·4–2·0 is proposed. Such measurements performed on a number of nuclei with atomic weights from 2 to 207 provide new information for detailed studies of the EMC effect and test models explaining thex-behaviour of the nucleon structure functions and their ratios. The measurements are decisive for the proof that a quark-parton model of the nucleus describes adequately nuclear structure probed at high energies. The upgraded high luminosity BCDMS spectrometer with improved resolution in transferred energyν can be used for the measurements.

Notes: Summary A customary representation formula for periodic spline interpolants contains redundance which, however, can be eliminated by a transcendent method. We use an elementary indentity for the generalized Euler-Frobenius-polynomials, which seems to be unknown until now, in order to derive the theory by purely algebraic arguments. The general cardinal spline interpolation theory can be obtained from the periodic case by a simple approach to the limit. Our representation has minimum condition for odd/even degree if the interpolation points are the lattice (mid-)points. We evaluate the corresponding condition numbers and give an asymptotic representation for them.

Notes: Abstract Inorganic carbon in the ocean is modelled as a passive tracer advected by a three-dimensional current field computed from a dynamical global ocean circulation model. The carbon exchange between the ocean and atmosphere is determined directly from the (temperature-dependent) chemical interaction rates in the mixed layer, using a standard CO2 flux relation at the air-sea interface. The carbon cycle is closed by coupling the ocean to a one-layer, horizontally diffusive atmosphere. Biological sources and sinks are not included. In this form the ocean carbon model contains essentially no free tuning parameters. The model may be regarded as a reference for interpreting numerical experiments with extended versions of the model including biological processes in the ocean (Bacastow R and Maier-Reimer E in prep.) and on land (Esser G et al in prep.). Qualitatively, the model reproduces the principal features of the observed CO2 distribution bution in the surface ocean. However, the amplitudes of surface pCO2 are underestimated in upwelling regions by a factor of the order of 1.5 due to the missing biological pump. The model without biota may, nevertheless, be applied to compute the storage capacity of the ocean to first order for anthropogenic CO2 emissions. In the linear regime, the response of the model may be represented by an impulse response function which can be approximated by a superposition of exponentials with different amplitudes and time constants. This provides a simple reference for comparison with box models. The largest-amplitude (∼0.35) exponential has a time constant of 300 years. The effective storage capacity of the oceans is strongly dependent on the time history of the anthropogenic input, as found also in earlier box model studies.

Notes: Abstract After microinjection of antibodies against RNA polymerase I into the nuclei of cultured rat kangaroo (PtK2) and rat (RVF-SMC) cells alterations in nucleolar structure and composition were observed. These were detected by electron microscopy and double-label immunofluorescence microscopy using antibodies to proteins representative of the three major components of the nucleolus. The microinjected antibodies produced a progressive loss of the material of the dense fibrillar component (DFC) from the nucleoli which, at 4 h after injection, were transformed into bodies with purely granular component (GC) structure with attached fibrillar centers (FCs). Concomitantly, numerous extranucleolar aggregates appeared in the nucleoplasm which morphologically resembled fragments of the DFC and contained a protein (fibrillarin) diagnostic for this nucleolar structure. These observations indicate that the topological distribution of the material constituting the DFC can be experimentally influenced in interphase cells, apparently by modulating the transcriptional activity of the rRNA genes. These effects are different from nucleolar lesions induced by inhibitory drugs such as actinomycin D-dependent “nucleolar segregation”. The structural alterations induced by antibodies to RNA polymerase I resemble, however, the initial events of nucleolar disintegration during mitotic prophase.
