Notes: The present paper reports on the synthesis of copolymers of ( - )-p-(3-menthyl) acrylate (1) with 4-vinylpyridine (2) by radical polymerization in a large range of composition. Reactivity ratio values of the two comonomers, evaluated by the Kelen-Tüdös method, have allowed to show that 2 exhibits a rather high reactivity as compared with 1. The average sequence length of the co-units and their distribution in the macromolecules were evaluated. The chiroptical properties of side chain pyridine chromophores were investigated by circular dichroism measurements and related to composition and distribution of the monomeric units.

Notes: Optically active copolymers of (-)3-menthyl acrylate (MtA) and (-)3-menthyl methacrylate (MtMA) with styrene (St) of different compositions were prepared by radical initiation. The reactivity ratios were determined by the least square evaluation of the Kelen-Tüdös parameters. Substantially alternating copolymers by donor-acceptor complex polymerization and the corresponding model compounds were also prepared. Spectroscopic and chiroptical properties of these copolymers and models were studied. The possible mechanisms of the generation of the induced dissymmetry of the longest wavelength π → π* electronic transition of the aromatic chromophore of St co-units are discussed.

Notes: A local model for the following reaction path is suggested. Exploratory calculations on simple isomerization reactions are undertaken. A local version of Hammond's postulate is proposed and tested on some model systems.

Notes: Styrene/p-hydroxystyrene copolymers were prepared from copolymers of styrene and p-benzyloxystyrene by cleavage of the ether bond. Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy was used to characterize the polymers before and after the ether cleavage reaction. Reactivity ratios were calculated by applying the method of least squares to data generated from the Fineman-Ross equation (r1 = 0.37, r2 = 0.28). The surface chemistry of centrifugally cast films of the homopolymers and the copolymers was studied by using electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis (ESCA). The Zisman contact angle method was used to determine the critical surface tension in air for each polymeric surface. Water contents of hydrated films were determined gravimetrically. The polar character of the surface was shown to increase to a small degree with an increase in the p-hydroxystyrene component. Polymers with high p-hydroxystyrene contents did not exhibit pronounced hydrogel character.

Notes: Homopolymers of myrcene and farnesene were prepared anionically in pure cyclohexane. The microstructure, determined from an analysis of the 13C-NMR spectrum and spin-lattice relaxation times, indicates the polymers are at least 85% cis-1,4, 10% cis-3,4, and under 3% trans-1,4.

Notes: A regenerative absorption-based process was developed for removing VOCs from N2 in an inert, nonvolatile, organic liquid flowing in compact hollow-fiber devices. The process eliminates flooding, loading, and entrainment, and can replace activated carbon adsorption. Two types of holow-fiber membranes were studied: one with a microporous wall and the other with a highly VOC-permeable nonporous coating on the outer surface of a microporous hollow fiber. Criteria for nondispersive operation were developed for each case. Experiments were conducted for the absorption of acetone, methylene chloride, toluene, and methanol from the respective VOC-N2 gas mixture using two absorbents: silicone oil and mineral oil. The highest mass-transfer coefficient was obtained for toluene followed by methylene chloride, acetone, and methanol. Different resistances making up the overall resistance in VOC absorption were characterized comprehensively to develop a predictive capability and compare the absorption performances of two types of fibers and the two absorbents. The absorbent-filled porous membrane contributed significantly to the total mass-transfer resistance. Numerical simulations of governing equations based on a cell model agree well with experimental results.

Notes: Cultural conditions optimum for β-galactosidase production by Saccharomyces anamensis are pH 4.5, temperature 26 ± 2°C, and 30 h of incubation period. Addition of lactose at 24 h fermentation greatly increase the level of enzyme. Optimum pHl, temperature, pH stability, and thermostability of yeast β-galactosidase are negligibly affected by immobilization. The Km values of enzyme in the native and immobilized cells are 102mM and 148mM, respectively. Glucose noncompetitively inhibits the enzyme activity. Addition of substances such as dithioerythritol, glutathione, and bovine serum albumin to the native cell during assay procedure and immobilized cell prior to immobilization have stimulatory effects on enzyme activity. Metal ions like Ca2+, Mg2+ enhance the β-galactosidase activity for both intact and bound cells. Immobilized cells retain 68.6% of the β-galactosidase activity of intact cells and there is no significant loss of activity on storage at 4°C for 28 days.
