Notes: Summary The sialic acid content of both thymus and bursa of Fabricius during their growth and involution phases in chick has been reported in this study. It is observed that the sialic acid concentration is very high in 1-week-old chickens. The concentration subsequently decreases to a significant level and rises again prior to the onset of involution. In the postinvolution period, a more or less minimal and constant level is maintained. The role of sialic acid in cellular activities of thymo-bursal system has been discussed.

Notes: Abstract The effect of horizontal as well as vertical temperature gradients on the stability of natural convection in a thin horizontal layer of viscous, incompressible fluid is studied on the basis of linear theory. The boundaries are taken to be rigid, perfectly thermally conducting, having prescribed temperatures and the horizontal temperature gradient is assumed to be small. It is found that for Prandtl number greater than 0.13, the critical Rayleigh number is always larger than that for the corresponding Benard problem. The preferred mode of disturbance is stationary and will be a transverse roll (having axes normal to the basic flow) or a longitudinal roll (having axes aligned in the direction of the basic flow) depending on whether the Prandtl number is less or larger than 1.7. Finally, it is shown that the instability is of thermal origin.

Notes: Summary The effect of the vertical magnetic field of uniform strength on the stability of natural convection in a thin horizontal fluid layer subject to horizontal as well as vertical temperature gradient has been studied on the basis of linear theory. The boundaries are taken to be rigid, perfectly thermally and electrically conducting having prescribed temperatures and the horizontal temperature gradient is assumed to be small. The analysis is restricted to the case when Prandtl number is greater than magnetic Prandtl number which is met by a large margin under most terristrial conditions. It has been found that the preferred mode of disturbance is stationary and will be a transverse roll or a longitudinal roll depending on three parameters namely Prandtl number, Chandrasekhar number and the ratio of Prandtl number to magnetic Prandtl number. The critical Rayleigh numbers for various values of the above three parameters have been reported.

Notes: Numerical experiments with a nonlinear (λχ4) oscillator which has its harmonic frequency changing randomly with time reveal certain interesting features of its dynamics of quantum evolution. When λ = 0, the level populations are seen to oscillate. But, as the nonlinear coupling is switched on (λ 〉 0), a threshold is reached at λ = λc when the evolution is seen to be characterized by an abrupt transition dominantly to the highest available state of the unperturbed (initial) oscillator. It is shown that this transition probability is maximized at a particular value of λ. The time threshold for this transition decreases with increasing nonlinear coupling strength. The numerically obtained structures of the underlying quantum-phase spaces of the linear and nonlinear random oscillators are examined. Possible use of these results in a problem of chemical origin is explored. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: The tunneling dynamics of one- and two-dimensional cubic oscillators having randomly fluctuating harmonic force constants (Kt) are studied numerically by invoking the time-dependent Fourier grid Hamiltonian method. The influence of the frequency and strength of the fluctuation on the tunneling probability and tunneling rate is analyzed. The predicted nature of the influence depends upon whether the cubic oscillator is one- or two-dimensional. The possibility of mapping the proton-transfer systems onto the present model is explored.   © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Int J Quant Chem 64: 403-409, 1997

Notes: Structural features of a series of tetraatomic carbonyls in the 1,3nπ* states are studied by using a recently proposed MCSCF algorithm at the INDO/2 level. The computed geometrical parameters and the inversion barrier heights agree quite well with the available experimental or ab initio theoretical data. The calculated transition energies turn out to be somewhat lower than the experimental counterparts. The specific MCSCF algorithm used is found to have excellent convergence properties.
