    Description: In this study, laser-processed multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)/Cu conductors are introduced as potential passive components to mitigate the skin effect of Cu at high frequencies (0–10 MHz). Suppressed skin effect is observed in the MWCNT/Cu conductors compared to primitive Cu. At an AC frequency of 10 MHz, a maximum AC resistance reduction of 94% was observed in a MWCNT/Cu conductor after being irradiated at a laser power density of 189 W/cm 2 . The reduced skin effect in the MWCNT/Cu conductors is ascribed to the presence of MWCNT channels which are insensitive to AC frequencies. The laser irradiation process is observed to play a crucial role in reducing contact resistance at the MWCNT-Cu interfaces, removing impurities in MWCNTs, and densifying MWCNT films.

    Description: Temperature-dependent magnetotransport properties of the antiferromagnetic semiconductor Sr 2 IrO 4 are investigated with point-contact devices. The point-contact technique allows to probe very small volumes and, therefore, to look for electronic transport on a microscopic scale. Point-contact measurements with single crystals of Sr 2 IrO 4 were intended to see whether the additional local resistance associated with a small contact area between a sharpened Cu tip and the antiferromagnet shows magnetoresistance (MR) such as that seen in bulk crystals. Point-contact measurements at liquid nitrogen temperature revealed large MRs (up to 28%) for modest magnetic fields (250 mT) applied within an IrO 2 ( ab ) plane with angular dependence showing a crossover from four-fold to two-fold symmetry with an increasing magnetic field. Point contact measurement exhibits distinctive anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) in comparison to a bulk experiment, imposing intriguing questions about the mechanism of AMR in this material. Temperature-dependent MR measurements show that the MR falls to zero at the Neel temperature, but the temperature dependence of the MR ratio differs qualitatively from that of the resistivity. This AMR study helps to unveil the entanglement between electronic transport and magnetism in Sr 2 IrO 4 while the observed magnetoresistive phenomena can be potentially used to sense the antiferromagnetic order parameter in spintronic applications.

    Description: In this paper, it is shown that the numerical differentiation method in performing the coupling parameter series expansion [S. Zhou, J. Chem. Phys. 125 , 144518 (2006); AIP Adv. 1 , 040703 (2011)] excels at calculating the coefficients a i of hard sphere high temperature series expansion ( HS-HTSE ) of the free energy. Both canonical ensemble and isothermal-isobaric ensemble Monte Carlo simulations for fluid interacting through a hard sphere attractive Yukawa ( HSAY ) potential with extremely short ranges and at very low temperatures are performed, and the resulting two sets of data of thermodynamic properties are in excellent agreement with each other, and well qualified to be used for assessing convergence of the HS-HTSE for the HSAY fluid. Results of valuation are that (i) by referring to the results of a hard sphere square well fluid [S. Zhou, J. Chem. Phys. 139 , 124111 (2013)], it is found that existence of partial sum limit of the high temperature series expansion series and consistency between the limit value and the true solution depend on both the potential shapes and temperatures considered. (ii) For the extremely short range HSAY potential, the HS-HTSE coefficients a i falls rapidly with the order i , and the HS-HTSE converges from fourth order; however, it does not converge exactly to the true solution at reduced temperatures lower than 0.5, wherein difference between the partial sum limit of the HS-HTSE series and the simulation result tends to become more evident. Something worth mentioning is that before the convergence order is reached, the preceding truncation is always improved by the succeeding one, and the fourth- and higher-order truncations give the most dependable and qualitatively always correct thermodynamic results for the HSAY fluid even at low reduced temperatures to 0.25.

    Notes: Rovibronic levels of the IF B 3Π(0+) state have been selectively excited using a cw dye laser in a crossed-molecular-beam experiment in which IF molecules were synthesized in the X 1∑+ ground state. Einstein A coefficients have been obtained from the fluorescence spectra. RKR potentials, Franck–Condon factors, and r centroids have been calculated using recently determined molecular constants for the X and the B state. The r-centroid approximation was found to be valid for the B–X system of IF and the variation of the electronic transition moment with the internuclear distance was determined. Over a range of the internuclear distance, 1.9〈r〈2.4 A(ring), the electronic transition moment was found to increase by as much as a factor of 2.4.

    Notes: The magneto-optical and optical properties of GdFe single layer films, which are covered with a thin Si3N4 layer, were studied in the visible wavelength region. A Kerr rotation peak and a reflectivity drop were observed near 4.1 eV in GdFe alloyed films and attributed to the Gd element. Compared with the single thick GdFe film, the Kerr effect of SiN/GdFe bilayers was enhanced, due to the optical interference between Si3N4 and GdFe. The Kerr rotation of GdFe films showed a nonlinear function of the compositions in the whole measured wavelength range. Magneto-optical measurements directly evidence the spin–flip in the GdFe films as the Gd content increased from 20.7 to 24.2 at. %, which showed advantages over conventional magnetometry. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The crystal structure of the high Tc superconducting phase in a Pb-doped Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O system (nominal composition Pb0.3Bi1.7Sr2Ca3Cu4OY) with a zero-resistance temperature of 107 K was determined with transmission electron microscopy. The investigation shows that the crystal structure, which is different from the Pb-free one, is monocline with dimensions a=0.532 nm, b=0.383 nm, c=3.71 nm, α=β=90° and γ=134.8°. A distinct change of wave vector of incommensurate modulation was also observed.

    Notes: In this paper we have prepared Fe/Cu, Ag, Au/Fe sandwiches by ion beam sputtering and studied the interlayer coupling behavior by ferromagnetic resonance technique. In these sandwiches the Fe and noble metal layers are polycrystalline in the textures of (110) and (111), respectively. It is found that the in-plane resonance field and the linewidth oscillate as a function of nonmagnetic layer thickness in a period of about 1.0 nm for Fe/Cu, Au/Fe structures, and 1.4 nm for Fe/Ag/Fe system. It is suggested that the interlayer coupling strength between the ferromagnetic layers oscillates in the same period with the resonance field. An in-plane anisotropy was found in Fe/Ag/Fe system. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Polar Kerr rotation spectra of Fe-SiO2 granular films were measured at room temperature in the wavelength region between 400 nm and 850 nm. A maximum Kerr rotation angle (θk) of 18 min was obtained when a magnetic field of 10 kOe was applied perpendicular to the film plane. We have measured θk as a function of Fe volume fraction (fv) of the films. It was found that θk increases with increasing fv and peaks at fv≈0.4. We also found that θk decreases as the Fe particle size increases. Our results indicate that the density of Fe particles and the interfaces between Fe particles and SiO2 matrix may play an important role in the Kerr rotation of granular films. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Co(22 A(ring))/Cu multilayers with Cu thicknesses varying from 6 to 40 A(ring) are studied by vibrating-sample magnetometry and ferromagnetic-resonance spectroscopy (FMR). The magnetization was found to increase with decreasing Cu thickness, whereas the linewidth of the uniform mode of the FMR was found to decrease. This is attributed to the spin polarization of the Cu layers due to interlayer coupling and its effect on the lowered dimensionality of the Co layers. We also observed a peak on the high-field side of the uniform FMR mode, which we attribute to antiparallel coupling of adjacent ferromagnetic layers producing an "optical'' mode. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A method is proposed according to which critical current density Jc at various temperatures T and dc fields B is estimated on (Tl0.5Pb0.5)(Ba0.2Sr0.8)2Ca2Cu3Oy based upon the flux diffusion barrier heights U(J,B,T) determined by means of ac susceptibility measurement at different ac field amplitudes, frequencies, T, and B. Jc is also estimated by the dc hysteresis measurement and compared with the former. The high Jc(B,T) and Tc show that this Tl-based superconductor is one of the more promising high-Tc materials from a practical standpoint. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.
