Notes: Strategies for the improvement of quasiaxisymmetric stellarator configurations are explored. Calculations of equilibrium flux surfaces for candidate configurations are also presented. One optimization strategy is found to generate configurations with improved neoclassical confinement, simpler coils with lower current density, and improved flux surface quality relative to previous designs. The flux surface calculations find significant differences in the extent of islands and stochastic regions between candidate configurations. (These calculations do not incorporate the predicted beneficial effects of perturbed bootstrap currents.) A method is demonstrated for removing low order islands from candidate configurations by relatively small modifications of the configuration. One configuration is identified as having particularly desirable properties for a proposed experiment. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Fixed- and free-boundary equilibria for Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) [W. Lotz et al., Plasma Physics and Controlled Nuclear Fusion Research 1990 (Proc. 13th Int. Conf. Washington, DC, 1990), (International Atomic Energy Agency, Vienna, 1991), Vol. 2, p. 603] configurations are calculated using the Princeton Iterative Equilibrium Solver (PIES) [A. H. Reiman et al., Comput. Phys. Commun., 43, 157 (1986)] to deal with magnetic islands and stochastic regions. Usually, these W7-X configurations require a large number of iterations for PIES convergence. Here, two methods have been successfully tested in an attempt to decrease the number of iterations needed for convergence. First, periodic sequences of different blending parameters are used. Second, the initial guess is vastly improved by using results of the Variational Moments Equilibrium Code (VMEC) [S. P. Hirshmann et al., Phys. Fluids 26, 3553 (1983)]. Use of these two methods have allowed verification of the Hamada condition and tendency of "self-healing" of islands has been observed. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The behavior of finite-pressure-induced magnetic islands is numerically analyzed for three-dimensional magnetohydrostatic equilibria of the Helias configuration by using a three- dimensional equilibrium code. It is found that an island chain is generated on the 5/6 rational surface, when such a surface appears in the plasma region of the finite-β equilibrium. The island chain, however, is not so dangerous as to destroy the plasma confinement even if it appears in a vanishingly small shear region. Thus, a high β equilibrium with clear magnetic surfaces can be realized. Moreover, it is definitely confirmed that the finite pressure effect sometimes exhibits an unexpectedly good aspect, namely, that the vacuum islands are removed as β increases, which can be called ‘self-healing' of islands. This property can be explained by the numerically discovered fact that the phases of islands induced by the finite-pressure effect are always locked in the same phase regardless of β.

Notes: The theoretical and experimental development of stellarators has removed some of the specific deficiencies of this configuration, viz., the limitations in β, the high neoclassical transport, and the low collisionless confinement of α particles. These optimized stellarators can best be realized with a modular coil system. The W7-AS experiment [Plasma Phys. Controlled Fusion 31, 1579 (1989)] has successfully demonstrated two aspects of advanced stellarators, the improved equilibrium and the modular coil concept. Stellarator optimization will much more viably be demonstrated by W7-X [Plasma Physics and Controlled Fusion Research, Proceedings of the 12th International Conference, Nice, 1988 (IAEA, Vienna, 1989), Vol. 2, p. 369], the successor experiment presently under design. Optimized stellarators seem to offer an independent reactor option. In addition, they supplement, in a unique form, the toroidal confinement fusion program, e.g., energy transport is anomalous in stellarators too, but possibly more easily understandable in the frame of existing theoretical concepts than in tokamaks.
