Notes: Third-order harmonic generation has been measured on highly oriented polydiacetylene (PDA) films prepared by the vacuum deposition method. Experimental values of the third-order electric susceptibility χ(3) measured for pumping laser polarized parallel to the polymer chain show a sharp three-photon resonance to the 1Bu exciton in PDA. Potential usefulness of these highly oriented PDA evaporated films in nonlinear optical applications is suggested.

Notes: The photodissociation spectrum of Ar+3 between 520 and 620 nm is reported. A broadband peaking near 520 nm is observed with a cross section of ∼1.8×10−16 cm2 at the peak, in agreement with the findings of Levinger et al. [J. Chem. Phys. 89, 71 (1988)]. However, in the present work, a shoulder whose prominence is highly temperature dependent is observed between 545 and 555 nm. The new results are discussed in terms of various electronic transitions and pathways to dissociation. The photodissociation mechanisms are studied by translational energy analysis of photofragmentation. Three photodissociation mechanisms that involve two electronic energy surfaces are proposed which account for the experimental findings.

Notes: We discuss a formulation of the level statistics for quantum systems that lie in an intermediate regime between the integrability subject to Poisson statistics and the full chaos subject to Gaussian statistics of the typical random matrix theory (RMT). It is based on the idea initiated by Yukawa and also by Nakamura and Lakshmanan, namely, to transcribe the eigenvalue statistics into statistical mechanics of the completely integrable Calogero system with internal degrees of rotation. By analyzing the previous works of Gaudin and Forrester from this viewpoint, we answer the question raised by Mehta and Dyson in early RMT concerning the expectation of compressible level gas, which is realized now in such an intermediate regime. It indicates the general absence of a fractional power dependence of the two-level correlation function under the ordinary thermodynamic-limit procedure as the manifestation that a transition between localized and delocalized states does not occur. The predictability of the transition by modifying the theory is remarked. Two applications of the present scheme are shown: the information loss per level and the correlation hole of survival probability for intermediate circular unitary ensembles. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: For the Z/nZ symmetric elliptic R matrix, L operators which act on the space of A(1)n−1 integrable characters, or the affine Weyl group invariants, of the fixed level l, are constructed. For l=1, the matrix elements of the L operator and those of the R matrix are shown to be the same.

Notes: The Monte Carlo method is used to explicitly show that solid–fluid phase boundaries determined by the visual appearance and disappearance of a solidlike structure is quite different from that expected in the bulk system and predicted by a full free-energy analysis. This feature of the computer simulations is almost self-evident and may be understood by the argument that the phase coexistence in the finite system is inevitably suppressed by the non-negligible interfacial energy compared with that in the infinite (bulk) system. One of the discrepancies among the recent simulation studies for the high-temperature phase behavior of a model C60 is found to be the consequence of overlooking the above feature of computer simulations. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We report the melting point of normal alkanes, from molecular dynamics calculations using the NPT ensemble. From the radial distribution function reflecting the arrangement of carbons, the solid–liquid phase transformation was identified in calculating a melting point in good agreement with the measured value. The effectiveness of periodic boundary conditions in the molecular dynamics calculations was also confirmed. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Angle-resolved ultraviolet photoelectron spectra were measured for oriented films of perfluorotetracosane, n-CF3(CF2)22CF3, as a model compound of poly(tetrafluoroethylene) using synchrotron radiation. The main spectral features showed continuous changes in both peak positions and intensities with photon energy, incident angle, and photoelectron take-off angle. The intramolecular energy-band dispersion of poly(tetrafluoroethylene) was mapped from the photo-energy dependence of the normal emission spectra. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We study a pair of commuting difference operators arising from the elliptic C2(1)-face model. The operators, whose coefficients are expressed in terms of the Jacobi's elliptic theta function, act on the space of meromorphic functions on the weight space of the C2-type simple Lie algebra. We show that the space of functions spanned by the level one characters of the affine Lie algebra sp&dbgcaret;(4,C) is invariant under the action of the difference operators. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Angle-resolved ultraviolet photoemission spectra using synchrotron radiation were measured for oriented thin films of bis(1,2,5-thiadiazolo)-p-quinobis(1,3-dithiole) (BTQBT) on graphite. From the photon energy dependence of normal emission spectra, the energy-band dispersion of π-bands were observed for the highest (HOMO) and next highest (NHOMO) bands. This is the first observation of intermolecular dispersion in a single-component organic molecular crystal. The results demonstrate that the BTQBT molecules have a strong intermolecular interaction, which can be derived from the introduction of a covalent interaction between sulfur atoms in addition to the usual intermolecular interaction by van der Waals forces.

Notes: Fiber-based ultrahigh-speed optical communications have achieved a remarkable level of success reaching multiterabit/s error-free transmission over several thousand kilometers. In the near future the total capacity is expected to approach a petabit/s. In this article critical issues that are involved behind the success of these achievements are reviewed and the future direction of ultrahigh-speed optical communications is discussed. The idea of the use of optical solitons for an information carrier is discussed comparatively with alternative approaches. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.
