Notes: For the Z/nZ symmetric elliptic R matrix, L operators which act on the space of A(1)n−1 integrable characters, or the affine Weyl group invariants, of the fixed level l, are constructed. For l=1, the matrix elements of the L operator and those of the R matrix are shown to be the same.

Notes: We study a pair of commuting difference operators arising from the elliptic C2(1)-face model. The operators, whose coefficients are expressed in terms of the Jacobi's elliptic theta function, act on the space of meromorphic functions on the weight space of the C2-type simple Lie algebra. We show that the space of functions spanned by the level one characters of the affine Lie algebra sp&dbgcaret;(4,C) is invariant under the action of the difference operators. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Raphanusanin is a plant growth-inhibiting substance which plays an important role in light growth inhibition and phototropism of radish hypocotyls. We investigated the effect of raphanusanin on indole-3-acetic acid (IAA)-mediated orientation of microtubules (MT) in the outer epidermal cells of radish hypocotyl segments using immunofluorescence microscopy. IAA-mediated MT reorientation preceded cell elongation induced by IAA. A change of IAA-mediated MT orientation from longitudinal to transverse started within less than 15 min after IAA treatment, while significant growth promotion induced by IAA was found within about 30 min. The IAA-mediated transverse MT orientations were significantly inhibited by simultaneously added raphanusanin. We also investigated the effect of raphanusanin on the MT orientation of the segments pretreated with IAA. The change of MT orientation induced by raphanusanin preceded growth inhibition of the segments. Within about 60 min after its application, raphanusanin initiated inhibition of the steady-state elongation pre-induced by IAA, while IAA-mediated transverse MT orientations started to change into longitudinal orientations within less than 30 min after application of raphanusanin. Based on these results, it is suggested that raphanusanin induces growth inhibition through interference with the auxin-mediated MT orientations.

Notes: The distribution of the endogenous auxin-inhibiting substance, 8-epixanthatin, was determined in the lighted and shaded sides of phototropically-stimulated, de-etiolated sunflower (Helianthus annuus L. cv. Taiyo) hypocotyls. From 40 min after the onset of phototropic stimulation, the growth rate at the lighted side was inhibited, whereas that at the shaded side showed no change. In the lighted side, 8-epixanthatin increased by 20 min after the onset of unilateral illumination and, after 40 min, reached a 3-fold larger concentration than that in the shaded side. Unilateral application of 8-epixanthatin suppressed the growth of etiolated hypocotyls at the applied side only, causing the hypocotyls to bend at the site of application. It is concluded that phototropic curvature in sunflower hypocotyls is caused by a lateral gradient of the auxin-inhibiting substance 8-epixanthatin.

Notes: Auxin-binding protein (ABP1) is a putative receptor for auxin in the plasma membrane. We isolated a full-length cDNA encoding ABP1 from radish by screening a cDNA library with its partial cDNA fragment generated by the reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) method. Radish abpl mRNA was highly expressed in cotyledons, hooks and hypocotyls, and less so in roots of radish seedlings. The deduced amino acid sequence of radish abpl consisted of conserved auxin-binding motifs, a signal peptide and ER-retention signal, and contained two potentially N-linked glycosylation signals. To analyze the biochemical properties of the radish abpl product, this cDNA was expressed in insect cells by the baculovirus vector system. The result of tunicamycin-treatment showed that the signal peptide was cleaved and that the radish abpl product was glycosylated at both target sites in insect cells.

Notes: Distribution of endogenous diffusible auxin into agar blocks from phototropically stimulated maize coleoptile tips was studied using a bioassay and a physicochemical assay, to clarify whether phototropism in maize coleoptiles involves a lateral gradient in the amount of auxin. At 50 min after the onset of phototropic stimulation, when the phototropic response was still developing, direct assay of the blocks with the Avena curvature test showed that the auxin activity in the blocks from the shaded half-tips was twice that of the lighted side, at both the first and second positive phototropic curvatures. However, physicochemical determination following purification showed that the amount of indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) was evenly distributed in the blocks from lighted and shaded coleoptile half-tips at both the first and second positive phototropic curvatures. The even distribution of the IAA was also confirmed with the Avena curvature test following purification by HPLC. These results indicate that phototropism in maize coleoptiles is not caused by a lateral gradient of IAA itself and thus cannot be described by the Cholodny-Went theory. Furthermore, the lower auxin activity in the blocks from the lighted half-tips suggests the presence of inhibitor(s) interfering with the action of auxin and their significant diffusion from unilaterally illuminated coleoptile tips.

Notes: Against the wholly indirect evidence of a lateral gradient of auxin as an explanation of phototropic curvature according to the Cholodny-Went theory, direct measurement of free. extractable or diffusable indoleacetic acid from phototropically curving hypocotyls and coleoptiles invariably shows an even distribution of auxin. On the contrary, growth inhibitors extracted or diffused from these organs turn out to be accumulated at the irradiated side, as proposed already by A. H. Blaauw (Z. Bot. 7: 465. 1915). the classical experiment by F. W. Went (Rec. Trav. Bot. Neerl. 25:1, 1928) has to be interpreted as evidence for a lateral gradient of substance(s) inhibiting auxin activity Phototropic curvature is thus a matter of differential auxin sensitivity across the unilaterally irradiated organ.

Notes: Using a physicochemical method, the distribution of endogenous indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) was measured in the peripheral and central cell layers, as well as in the illuminated and shaded sides of phototropically stimulated radish hypocotyls (Raphanus sativus var. hortensis f. gigantissimus Makino). The IAA was evenly distributed over the illuminated and shaded sides in the first and second positive phototropic curvatures induced by a pulse or a continuous unilateral illumination with blue light. Also, no net exchange of the IAA between the peripheral and central cell layers was observed during these curvatures. These results suggest that phototropism of radish hypocotyls cannot be described by the Cholodny-Went theory.

Notes: Abstract: For Belavin's elliptic quantum R-matrix, we construct an L-operator as a set of difference operators acting on functions on the type A weight space. According to the fundamental relation RLL=LLR, taking the trace of the L-operator gives a set of commuting difference operators. We show that for the above mentioned L-operator this approach gives Macdonald type operators with elliptic theta function coefficient, actually equivalent to Ruijsenaars' operators. The relationship between the difference L-operator and Krichever's Lax matrix is given, and an explicit formula for elliptic commuting differential operators is derived. We also study the invariant subspace for the system which is spanned by symmetric theta functions on the weight space.
